Modern Classics or Grail Guns?
I'm curious as to what the sage members, consider to be the most desirable S&W's firearms to own. Especially firearms made after 1960. Please chime in and post a picture or two.

For me, if the barrel is pinned and the cylinders recessed it's desirable.
Most recent purchases: model 36 (1960), model 38 (1957), and today a model 40 (flat latch, year unknown for now)
Last year: model 28-2 (1972) pinned 6" barrel, recessed cylinders and a very smooth trigger.

The oldest revolver that I currently own was made in 1966.
I tend to gravitate to S&Ws without the IL and, I do like the P&R models but, it depends. I don't have a early P&R 629 yet.

Model 27s in 3.5", 4" and 5"
Model 29s
Model 66's in 3" and 4"
Lew Horton guns
586 L-comp
3" 686+ from Talo distributing
Those are all sought after.
I have a 4" 629, pinned and recessed, they didn't make that many of them, that is a keeper for sure.

If I could only own one revolver it would be a 686 2.5" And if I had to limit it to 10 guns it would be...
686-4 2.5"
686-4 3.0"
686-4 4.0"
60 2" .38 or .357
66-1 2.5" or 3.0"
629- 2.5"
27-2 4.0"
28-2 4.0"
37 2.5
12-2 2.5"
And I need one good knife.

My desirables are my M696, M66 3", and M65 LS.
My "Grail Gun" was not a S&W but a DS 3".

I guess my personal "Grail Gun" would be a 4" model 18. I own a 4" model 48, but it pales in comparison.

I'm kind of lost. What does an M-48 lack when compared to an M-18 other than the caliber?

The Model 48 is more expensive to shoot. It is also very dirty, and requires a sweep-down with a brush, for every cylinder full.
I'm not saying that I don't like it, Its just not as useful or fun as the Model 18.

The loves of my life are anything Model 19 Nickel or Model 66, in 4" and 6". Lord, how I love shooting those things.
I'm also building a romance with my Model 69. I love carrying it in the woods but I'm not a big fan of shooting it all that much.

I hope someday to own a S&W Model 52. I just think it would be a lot of fun to load for and shoot on the range.
A semi-automatic in a classic revolver caliber has to be a hoot!

Revolvers:
The 3 inch 66s dash -2,-3-,-4 .........
Even more desired by me would be one of the 50...... 3inch 19s.
4" 586-6 with the factory round butt and pre MIM parts.......1996/97 (IIRC).
One that doesn't exist....... a 3" "65 NL"........... no "Ladysmith" marking on the frame.
Autos:
PC 6906 SD-9....... 9mm all stainless, steel frame, w/ a 4.25inch barrel.... also a .356 and .40 cal. versions.
The PC 6906s reverse two tone (several small run versions)......... IMHO great looking guns.....
3913 and 3914NLs....... w/ Hogue wood grips they really turn heads at the range....."What's that??...How do I get one???"
PC DPA 59s
Love to have one (or more) of the long slide 5906s....... 5" barrel/slides.

I like older, blue guns, but do have a Mdl 21-4 because it's so cool (and I got a good deal on it).
My only stainless is a Mdl 681 which I'd trade for a 581 in a heartbeat!

Neither would I. That K Comp came from a Forum member for a good price. In fact I also bought the model 19 version (w/o box) from him. And I am awaiting a 3" 625-3, also from him, due to arrive shortly.
Keep an eye on our classifieds! Just keep passing them around. I let four go in the last two weeks and at good prices.
19-7 3" PC
625-3 3"

I consider these to be modern classics. 17-6, 16-4, & 14-5.
A few Grail revolvers that I was lucky to find.

A few of my favorite modern S&W's
586-4, Six inch with combat stocks replacing the ugly factory rubber.
586-2 with the loooong tube
A modern Dirty Harry would carry this 29-10 with an Ultra-Dot sight and fancy wood Hogues.
A long tube 686-1M with little bro 686 no dash 4 inch
Scoped 686-3 and a silhouette sight 686-4
How about a 624 .44 Special?
15-2 Nickel
581 no dash AAA serial
Too much fun! 617-6 ten shot
Thunder Ranch specials- 21-4 and 22-4. The TR22-4 is one of my favorite big bore range guns.

"Must haves" made after 1960 for me include:
57 (preferably 1964 first year)
16-4
24-3
66 2.5 inch
27-2 3.5 inch
There are more, many more, but gotta have those.

My collection of Smith's consists of my three grail guns. Though I do agree since acquiring them I've come up with new Grails to track down and buy.
S&W model 29-10 factory nickel.
S&W 65-3 with a 3" barrel
S&W pre model 10

Revolvers made in the 1990's. -5 and -6 29's, -3 and -4 629's and 586/686 models.
29 and 629's as well as the classic and classic dx versions, classic hunters and well as 657 versions. Performance center models of the same.
The first generation 627 8 shot .357 N frame
586 and 686 revolvers
Etc.

If I were trying to get just what I "needed" to have a good selection of revolvers, I would have to start with a K-22/Model 17 and a K-38/Model 14 (the older the better) or their stainless equivalents like a Model 617 and a Model 66 or 67. A big bore N frame like a Model 29 or 629. I like 32 caliber revolvers as well, so a Model 30 or ideally a K-32/Model 16 would probably sneak into the mix as well. Of course everybody has their own opinion of what their "needs" are so the preceding is JMHO, YMMV.

547 9mm 6 shooter ...
Most definitely my Grail gun from the revolver category. It's a shooter and sometimes carry gun, with a 3914 DAO as back-up for a NY re-load.

I've picked up five (six) grail guns in the last year (photos below):
- Birth year ('52) Chiefs Special
- Pre-model number Highway Patrolman from '54
- Pre-model number Centennial from '55 (that had been the holy grail)
- Model 547 3", shooter from '83 (they're all shooters, aren't they?) I'd have preferred a pinned barrel, but I stole this one.
- DAO Model 36-2 from '89 (I made a pig of myself, one's ANIB)
I'll look at any Chiefs Special from the model's first 49 years. Gaps I seek to fill are 36-4, -5, -8 and -9.
Others on the wish list include a 2" postwar M&P, 2" postwar .32 HE, 2" postwar Terrier, 13-1 3", 45 4" (probably won't happen -- I'm of Scots heritage), 58 with S sn, 520, 586 and a 940.
The holy grail is a two-tone (pinto) Chiefs Special Model 50 from the early '70s.
Slàinte,
Bob

I've bought and paid for my current gun collection selling others their "Grail Guns".
I don't think the current "Classics" would treat me that well.

My post 1960 Grail Guns:
A set of nickel 8-3/8" guns, models 27-2, 57, and 29-2.
Lew Horton N frame snubs. Already have the 624.
Any pre-IL PC guns, particularly a 627.
A 627-0.
An early 610.
So yeah, a bunch of uncommon N frames
