Default Short barrels?

Hi,

Do you find a difference in your accuracy (not from a rest / but from your normal stance) when shooting a 1 7/8" vs 2 1/2" barrel.

I'm wondering if the extra bit of distance between the sights helps to shrink the group size?

Thanks,
Dave

Personally, zero difference in accuracy with those barrel lengths provided all other variables are accounted for.

Mechanical accuracy variances are likely within the range of variation between individual firearms, but the ergonomic issues will likely have an impact on practical accuracy. It is simply easier to shoot a 6" K38 well than a 2" M15, but that's ergonomic, not mechanical.

Hope that helps.

the longer the sight radius, the easier to shoot smaller groups.

took me 10 cylinders full til I got my 3" 24 to shoot under 2" groups at 50 feet.

With 6" bbl, I'm dissapointed if I can't shoot that on the first try.

Generally speaking, a 1 7/8" barrel comes on a J frame, and a 2 1/2" barrel comes on a K frame. So the sight radius difference is more than 5/8" and, more important, the K frame is heavier and may fit the hand better. Also, the 2 1/2" barrel is usually associated with what most would regard as better sights.

My 66 and 19 are both more accurate in normal practice than my J frames, and a lot faster to shoot with. However, you should never bet your life, or even large sums of money, that the other guy can't shoot his J frame snubby well, also.

Thanks, I have the model 15 with 1 7/8" barrel. It's a shooter. But, at 25 yards I can't consistently hit my 6" target. I can probably hit the 6" target half of the time. The rest are fliers. I know it's not a target gun, but it's kind of fun to try... I just need more practice. 25 yards is the shortest distance at my range.

These groups were shot from a rest at 25 yards.

By the way, I had the front sight thinned down to .090 and it really helps with the sight picture. That was a big improvement from my eyes.

I know you didn't say that they were all like this, but my mod 10 had a 1 7/8" barrel.

The path to better accuracy is usually more ammunition. But since I got one, I have found that a Crimson Trace laser grip used in dry-fire practice is a terrific substitute for at least some of the ammunition. It's something you can do on the spur of the moment, for as long or as short as you want, without using any gas or putting wear on your car, and with instant feedback on every drop of the hammer.

You still need to get to a range and shoot some real stuff from time to time, to keep comfortable with the noise and recoil, and to verify that your dry fire exercises are working. But there's a LOT you can gain at home with a laser grip. You can pay for one pretty quickly in ammunition and other costs NOT expended.

It looks like I turned the corner with the snubby.

I shot 54 rounds today at 25 yards and got most of them on target (single action). I was starting to wonder if I was chasing an unrealistic goal.

Nice shooting!
Those 2" Masterpieces have a reputation for thinking they're target guns

I don't know how hard it is for some to shoot different barrel lengths at the same range trip and really don't master any of them. I would rush trying to shoot everything at one trip.

Now with the shorter barrels at 25 yards I look down the barrel and cover with the barrel what I want to hit. I don't use the sights. I'm talking a 2 3/4" barrel.

The 4" & longer barrels I use the sights.

Now I limit my guns at a range secession due to taking the time to master each gun and keep the edge with the magnum power.

I'm sure I'm not alone I just don't shoot enough like I once did.

I can use short barrels for SD but that's about all. If I ever get another I'm going to try to analyze why I don't shoot well with them.
