Unhappy Possible 686 firing pin bushing problem

Hi
I noticed a possible problem with my 686, I was firing .357 magnum trough it for the first time. The drum got jammed.
I then noticed that the firing pin bushing was sticking out from the frame, about a millimeter+. It also look damaged.

Have anybody seen this before, is it suppose to be like that?

If it is a 686 no dash, or a 686-1 and there is no "M" stamped by the model number under the yoke, you need to contact Smith and send it back for the recall.

I suppose that it is possible that you had primer flow into the bushing and in getting the cylinder open you loosened the bushing enough for it to protrude. The recall will fix that. Their dime / good turnaround.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Its not that old. I don't have it here, but its a 686-5 or 686-6.
Is it suppose to be flush with the frame?

Yes, it's supposed to be flush. Call Smith.

Looks like the crimp that holds the bushing in the frame was not done correctly.

Without seeing it first hand I can only guess at how much it is actually raised but I suspect it's closer to 1/2mm than a full mm. Even if it's only 1/2mm it's still too much and by noticing the 3 holes in your top strap I know for certain that your 686 was made after 1993. This means that it is within the time frame for S&W's Lifetime Warranty. So, call S&W Customer Service and inform them that you have a Warranty issue that needs correcting.

Good news is that S&W pays for shipping in both directions so you won't have any out of pocket costs with the exception of the gas needed to drop it off at a Fed Ex Depot. More good news is that S&W turns around warranty repairs pretty quickly so you are likely looking at a 2 to 3 week turnaround.

Bad news is that S&W will ship the return direct to whatever address you list without giving you any prior notice whatsoever. So, if you give them your home address that is where it will be shipped and it may end up left on your front stoop for any passerby to steal. If you can't receive firearms at your work I would suggest that you arrange with a local gun shop to receive your returned warranty repair. It may cost you a small fee to do this but that is a lot less than what it will cost to replace a stolen handgun.

I live in Norway, so a bit unsure how the warranty works here. Hopefully I can get it repaired here. I will contact them.

Thanks for the help guys :-)
