Default To all my DFW friends - Model 64's

If anyone is interested in either 2" or 4" Model 64's, Sporting Arms in Lewisville has them. They are Brinks Security trade-ins. The 4" models have bobbed hammers. Did ask the price, but they looked in good shape.

Thanks for the information! I just got off the phone with them and they said the shape on the 2 inch models are pretty nice. I guess I will find out when mine gets shipped.

The best part of it all is I just received a very nice Model 1 Pancake holster from Ray at Lobo Leather for a 2 inch Model 64, so the timing couldn't be better.

If I can get my kid to help me post a picture of the 64 and holster, when the 64 arrives, I will do so.

Hopefully the beauty of the gun is as nice as the beauty of the holster.

See how good Intel works out. By the way, all of them have Pach's rubber grips on them.

Another thanks for the information.
I also have a 2 Inch on order. I believe it said bobbed hammer on the product information. Not a big deal to me.
I have wanted a 2-3 inch 64/65 for a while now. They normally are a little steep on the prices on GB. This looks to be a pretty fair deal. With luck it will be in good shape, and not be stamped up or engraved.

They all looked to be in pretty good shape. No new in the box condition. Normal handling condition.

Iwas hoping for picture's by now.
My local dealer faxed the FFL today, now the wait begins.
I have a 2" M10 and a 2" M15. I try and not carry either in the Summer when I get hot and sweaty. A stainless K Snub will make a great CCW piece for me.

I ordered a 4 inch today. I emailed the FFL and it will ship tomorrow. She said it was dirty but looked good.

UPDATE - I was at GT Distributors this morning (635 & Shiloh Rd). They have a table full of used revolvers. Couple Detective Specials, Model 64's, 2 RB Model 65's, couple RB Model 64's and Model 60's They ARE not in good visual shape. But they function and lock up tight. I almost bought one of the Detective Specials but could not justify it. None of them were more than $350. Bunch of 3rd Gen's in the display case as well along with Sig's and Glocks.

2" Model 10s are definitely going to cost you more than $275 if they're in any kind of decent shape. The last snub K that I acquired was a M15 and it cost $625. It is gorgeous, of course. The 10s will be over $400 most of the time presently. 2" 15s are harder to find so I had to have it.

The bobbed hammer 4" Model 64s might be re-imports unless the store has stated for a fact that they're local PD turn ins. Are they DAO or standard DA?

Sadly, I paid nearly twice as much for my bobbed hammer M64 4" around 2 years ago, maybe a little less, it is a re-import, it is DAO, and has the worst trigger of any handgun I have ever owned. I bought it because it was odd and fit neatly into my collection but if I ever want to carry it that trigger has to go.

I paid around $225 for my standard 4" M64 back around the same time but it was a security company private sale; they were changing to some other guns and liquidating everything they had that was old. It's closer to normal than the bobbed hammer gun but I like my Model 10 4" better (a Wells Fargo liquidation).

Long ago, in a land far, far away, I was issued a Model 13. I loved that piece. Then the Sheriff decided on Model 19's, then Model 65's. I remember poking my head in the gun closet and seeing boxes of 3" Model 13's. Ah, to be young again

The only problem with that is that when I was young or younger I either had too little money or too many responsibilities to go on gun buying binges. Today, that's not the case - the only problem is that I don't have time to shoot them all routinely. But I have more than my share according to the anti-gunners......thank you VERY much!

Not the best images but as I said I had to have my son show me how to do it.

Fresh back from the range and was very accurate and handled well. Thinking about sending her in to Smith and Wesson for a Combat Action Package. Had one done on a Model 19 and it is smooth as butter.

There are some wear marks on the cylinder but overall in pretty good shape. Had to do some cleaning under the grips when I received it. Probably from the last user being a little liberal with the oil which then collected some other interesting stuff.

The holster is a new Model 1 Pancake from Ray at Lobo Leather. Not sure where I got the comforter from?

BIG THANKS TO JR78 FOR PUTTING THE WORD OUT!

I don't mean to speak for JR 78 but the one I got was a 64-6. I bought another of the Brinks models in the 4 inch configuration from somewhere else and it was also a 64-6.

None of the ones I have seen, in Missouri or from this vendor, have the lock on them.

Nope. And to answer a previous question....I don't know if they were DAO or not. The hammers were bobbed so I guessing they were.

Does "Nope" mean they're a mix of lock and pre-lock?

Okay, so we have reports that the Sporting Arms M64's are a mix of -5's and -6's (maybe others?). Those are both pre-lock. The -5 had a forged hammer and MIM trigger. The -6 had MIM T&H. Both are new-frame without the replaceable cylinder stop stud and with the "Nike" latch. Bobbed hammer DAO.

The answer is get one of everything, just to be sure. Seriously, 64s should be sold in six-packs like beer. I mean this, I really do. Remember the recent poster who bought several at a time?

USPS Click & Ship says delivery Saturday. Since the Gun Shop is closed Saturday, Monday will be the big day.
I could not tell from the pictures if it was Bright Stainless or Frosted. I read somewhere that Brinks had some NY1 64's that New York did not take, and they were the frosted finish.

Bobbed Hammer DAO is ok with me. I shoot DA 99% of the time anyway.
The oil and crud under the grips is better than pitting. My 4 Inch 64 that I got a few years back was pitted under the grips. The good part is it was mechanically 100%, and has been a great SSR/Classic revolver.
Just checked my revolver box, and I have Wolff springs on hand. I will do a little work on it while I have it apart cleaning it, provided it is in good health to start with.

This should be a great CC revolver. I have my M10 Snub on loan to my brother, and my Combat Masterpiece Snub is way to clean to carry much.

Default I am suffering!

I ordered three M64s with the four inch barrel from SportingArms.com for the kids and myself.

They are very nice people to deal with and described the revolvers as being in very good condition, with the grips showing most wear.

Can any of you guys, who has already received their 4" guns tell me about the condition and post a few photos, while I am suffering the wait?

My 2" 64 arrived over the weekend. It's a 64-7 with the IL. It's in good shape, only a couple superficial scratches that should buff out. It came with Uncle Mike's grips. The hammer is bobbed, but the single-action notch is intact. I'm going to get a new hammer and maybe a Plug.

I picked mine up Monday, gun shop was closed Saturday.
It was a 64-6, with 2 Inch Barrel.
Grips were Uncle Mikes.
Satin Stainless finish.
It has a few scratchs that should come out. No rust under the grips.
Lockup was good.
Trigger Pull was extra heavy.
Factory DAO with Bobbed Hammer.
NO non-factory markings anywhere.
Serial Number: CEP569X
Serial Number Locations:
Bottom of Grip Frame like normal
Left side at the bottom of the grip frame
Crane area above the Model Number Stamp
All the serial number stampings looked the same.
It was Dry and a little Dirty. It had been fired more than I would have thought. White paint on the front sight also. I swapped the grips off my 10-5 snub. It now has Pachmayr Compac grips on it. I also put in a Wolff reduced power hammer spring, and a #13 rebound spring. It now has a very nice trigger. I am headed to the range in a few minutes. The Gravel Truck, and Bobcat operator should show up at around 8:30 to add more gravel under 3 new 18' X 20' car ports we had installed as a cover on the upper General Purpose Range. I should have time to fire a few rounds through the old girl and make sure she is running fine.

I am a happy camper. This would have been marked at $550 - $600 at any of my local gun shops. I liked the barely over $300 price with shipping a lot better.

The last K Snub that showed up at my local Gun Shop was probably 2 years back. It was a Model 10-5 with quite a bit of Blue wear. I think it was marked $600. I got it a little cheaper than that. K Snubs just do not get traded in around my area.

Thanks guys,

this makes me even more eager to see the three revolvers! My youngest son ordered them and called the store. He got the shipping reduced from $24 to $15 per gun and was promised that they select nice guns for him.

He really wanted a .38 Special revolver. He got my old bowling pin S&W 625 from me and my Ruger Service Six (as well as many other guns) but craved a S&W M10/64 or 65. We have a reloading press set up for .38 Special and using it is free in the family.

Just got off the phone with Becky at ShootingArms (love that Texas accent). My two 2-inchers ship today. She said they're both -6's. Placed the order a week ago today. Held with a cc and mailed a postal MO. $275 ea, plus $30 shipping for the both.

Nope. And to answer a previous question....I don't know if they were DAO or not. The hammers were bobbed so I guessing they were.
2" or 4", if they are bobbed hammer/DAO I bet you will find, as one other writer above stated, that the triggers are extra heavy. Before I would consider carrying mine I would have the trigger changed. I don't like really light triggers but the heavy, quite awful trigger on my DAO M64 is downright scary - I'd never want to try to hit anything serious with it.

I am expecting a "service grade" trigger pull, i.e. rather on the heavy side but that is not a problem. I am used to work on S&W revolvers beyond changing springs and love doing so.

I got a box full of triggers and hammers, springs, cylinders, barrels, and all the little parts that accumulate over a life time of shooting.

I had a chance to fire mine today after cleaning it, and adding the #13 Rebound Spring and Wolff Reduced Power Hammer Spring.
The trigger pull after changing the springs and cleaning it was Night & Day different.
If fired every time like clock work.

The Hammer Spring looked like every other K Frame factory hammer spring I have seen. My guess is that the Extra Heavy Trigger Pull was the result of a very heavy rebound spring.

I am surprised at no comments on the Serial Number being stamped by the factory in 3 locations. I thought that was of note.

This one is going to be a keeper for sure.

Bob,

since I cannot fondle the M64s just yet and have rummaged through my parts boxes and the grip boxes as medication to pass the wait, I have also done some research.

What I found mentioned is that the M64s for Brinks are overruns of NY-1 police revolvers. NY police had required the serial number to be stamped in different places. It would also explain the extra heavy trigger pull.

As noted in the SCSW that was a standard practice at S&W in the 2000 to 2002 time frame. Not all, but many revolvers were marked that way. I've seen a few before. All it may indicate is your revolver was made during that time frame.

I received my 64-5 on Monday. It was nicked and scratch up and dirty. The trigger pull was heavy. Good lock up. I cleaned it up and put a 14lb rebound spring in it. Now the trigger pull is better. I just order wolff springs. I did a little sanding and used a 3m pad. In all I'm happy. I have just less that $250 in it. With the prices of used revolvers in my area that is outstanding. I like the DAO and the balance. I have been wanting a 4 inch RB. Becky was grate to deal with. I told her the next time they get trade ins call me. All I need to do now is go to the range.

I talked to Becky today. She was really thrilled and amazed that one day they're there and the next they're flying off the shelf. I told her the power of the internet is a powerful thing. I also told her next time she gets a load of similar pieces, to call me.

Honesty folks, Becky has some of the best prices around. I bought a Remington LTR today that's been sitting there for at least 5 years. $689 out the door. She told there's been at least 50 people had fondled it over the years, but know takers.

You want a Kimber/Les Baer/Wilson .45 ACP? Call Becky. She has them in stock. If your local in DFW, call her first.

Now does anyone want my LE trade-in 6906 with three factory mags?

Can you actually go there in person? If that was the case I would have been all over those 64's, but I got the impression that it was internet only sales with dealer transfers.

jrs70, even your grips look pretty decent. They're not beat up at all. IINM the -5 was forged hammer with MIM trigger and latch. All on the old style frame. Truly, a transition piece.

JRS70,

that revolver came out well. That is more than I dare to expect for $238 with shipping and FFL fees at my end. That is just a few bucks more than I paid for a S&W M64 LE trade-in in 1996.

The grips are not as good as they show in the pictures. I like rubber grips, so they will stay untill I find something I like better. I'll still work on the finish. As stated above I'm still going to work on the action. This one is going to work out just fine.

JRS70,

they told us that the grips show wear but that is okay since I still have a couple of nice K-frame RB service and FGC grips, as well as some Nills that I could put on. Changing grips around, cleaning, stoning, and changing springs is as much valuable hobby time as reloading and shooting.

I like the old Uncle Mike grips and if one pair is just acceptable, will keep it on one of the guns.

I was told my grips were better than most. I have a set just like them in better shape. I also have other K frame grips that will fit, both wood and rubber. They will stay on untill I find a set I like better. That most likely won't happen any time soon. I have a few others in that line.

Well, I received my wolff springs and installed a 13 lb rebound spring and a reduced power mainspring. The trigger pull is much better. Now I have to take it to the range.

We received the three revolvers, all are in good shape. Two are 64-6'es of which one is good+ and one good to very good condition, the third gun is a 64-5 and is in very good+ condition.

I put the service grips on the 64-5 but besides, that is the condition that the guns came in. I am very happy with SportingArms! For under $240 we got very nice S&W revolvers without the internal locks!

My two 2-inch -6's have all the little nicks and scuffs you'd expect in a ex-service revolver. Nothing deep. Nothing that won't clean up. By the time I'm done they'll look new.

One had a very nice trigger. The other will need some spring work. Grips were Uncle Mike combats in pretty good shape. Both lock up very tight on every cylinder. No endshake to speak of. The hammers are true DOA and can't be made to cock into a single action position.

Will check cylinder gap as soon as I can find where the heck I put my feeler gauge. One is a little balky on opening. I can see the bolt plunger isn't moving forward fully. Probably some gunk in the action. I'll get it apart in a few days and I bet it's an easy fix.

I'm really thrilled. This is the best deal I've gotten on a used Smith since (forever) my next door neighbor retired as a reserve officer and sold me his 6-inch M686 and 300 rounds of ammo for $300. But that was in 1995.

At the time I didn't know they were a revolver that was used sometimes abused then traded in with some wear. Bought mine from a police gun shop had taken them in from a university. I've mentioned this on post before but at the time didn't know a friend was the training officer. Then told all were rebuilt every 2 yrs by a smith rep. Ultimately he said I had a 2 year old gun mfg date 1997. No lock no transfer bar etc. $350 but for the history info I'm pleased . Very nice 4 inch stainless shoots poa not a scratch on the gun locks tight. They're out there to find a great deal and those 64 models can do lots of rounds.
