New Revolver with 'Rusty/Pitted Trigger
I just recently purchased a S&W 638CT (with Crimson Trace) 'Airweight 5RD Revolver from 'BudsGunShop.com. I had been in the Layaway since the end of June 2014 (about 90 days). A couple of days ago it was shipped to my FFL and upon opening it was discovered that the trigger was rusty and pitted. My FFL called and told me about it. I called Buds Gun Shop and they are sending my FFL information to return it and get it 'replaced. My question to any of you out there that may know more than I do is 'how could this have happened on a 'supposedly 'new weapon?
Buds Gun Shop told me that they do not inspect weapons before shipping because if they are new they are shipped in the same 'unopened box that the manufacturer sends to them, so am I to assume that the fault of the condition of this weapon would fall on the S&W manufacturer?
I am going to attempt to upload one of the better pictures that my FFL sent me so you all can take a 'look-see for yourself. Does anyone know how this could happen to a brand new weapon?

I don't know their procedure, but I assume S&W spray's down all their firearms with some kind of corrosion preventative/preservative before they go in the box. This one must of miss that step. Is the little round carbon steel part inside the lock-hole rusted too? How about the grip screw? IINM that's CS too. Hammer?

Good call returning it.
Buds is very good about this.

Probably rusted siting in the parts bin prior to assembly - worker apathy allowed it to become a "gun" and go into a box for sale.
Wonder what kind of warranty accrual Smith is carrying on the balance sheet these days?

I wonder, was the S&W installer having a bag of potato chips while installing the trigger, and not wiping anything off?

Could at least have had the courtesy to leave the bag of chips in the box! Seriously, interesting comment above about the grip battery.

As I recall from my days in Naval Aviation, steel and aluminum are a recipe for galvanic corrosion.

Hope they make it right. I bought a NIB 638 earlier this year and it was 2010 model. Came out of the box like it was made the day before it arrived.

The VCI paper that should wrap a new revolver would generally protect the firearm from this sort of rusting. So, rusted before shipping from S&W, or rusted after paper removed, possibly at S/N verification at the shop where it sat all these months. Would suspect the latter. Inspection of the box's foam liners and the VCI paper should provide clues...

That's totally BS on buds gun shop part they have to check the numbers before it's logged in to there records and again before it's shipped to your ffl. Someone is pulling a fast bait and switch trying to get rid of a bad one.
It happens in drive thru fast food all the time bait and switch.

So Bud's is obligated to check the serial number against the box and the other paperwork? This sounds correct based on the extreme care FFLs have taken to sell me new gunz recently. This is especially true in big box high volume outlets.
The FEDs love to bust FFLs chops on paperwork errors so this sounds correct to me.
I've purchased from Bud's more than once and they seem to be a good retailer. I assume they are the highest volume independent store in the country.

If you buy a pistol from Palmetto Armory, they definitely open the case. Each case I received had a folded sheet of paper inside with the stores policy restrictions.
