Quick Mdl 64 price check
Looking at a 3" Mdl 64 at a gun show. Round butt. Needs new grips because the rubber ones are chewed up. Other than that it feels and looks good. The shop is firm at $399.00.
Is that reasonable, low, high?

I'd say it's a good price if you want a 3". JG sales has 4" 64's in the $300 range and 2" in the upper $300 range.

Deal done. Or will be Wednesday. Same price, but he's holding it on a handshake. It was the gun of a retired LEO. Not shot much at all. I had another revolver guy look at it and he agreed that it looks new. The only flaw is a scratch on the side plate. if that won't polish out I'll try hunt down a replacement.
Pictures when it's in hand.
Any suggestions on grips and holster?

If it's definitely mechanically sound, that's currently a very good price for a 3" 64.

If you're planning on carrying it, especially concealed, factory magnas and a Tyler T-Grip do an excellent job of keeping the profile low while filling the hand a better than magnas alone; makes a difference controlling under draw and fire.
If minimum profile isn't a primary concern, I've found factory round butt target grips -- smooth or checkered -- really balance 3" K-frames nicely.
If the durability of rubber is required, Hogue bantams are great on this gun.
Stocks -- there's so many, and they're really personal.

I like the Uncle Mike boot grips, best. Hogue bantams were my favorite until I tried the UM's.
I'd go after that scratch on the side plate with some 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper backed by a small rectangular piece of ridged foam (Dura Block) cut down to about the size of a pack of gum. Use WD-40 to clean the sand paper and lubricate/flood the work area. The backer keeps the flats flat and the edges sharp. Once the scratch was gone, I'd use progressively finer grades of sandpaper to get back to a factory like brushed finish. Final step would be a light going over with Scotch Brite gray pad.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. The first day I can get over to the shop is Wednesday in the afternoon. As it happened, the dealer was at the gun show I was working and at the next table down.
I think I'm going to like this one very much. Now I don't have to drool when I see all those pictures of everyone else's 3" K frame.

I second the bantams. (painted the right side with clear nail polish to keep them from catching on cover garment.)
Magnas and BK grip adapters are nice as well.
I have some Badger boot grips on my J-frame that are real nice, tempted to get some for my M10.

I like the looks of wooden grips, especially on stainless guns, but for utility I find that rubber grips are better. At least for me. My Mdl 10s sport Monogrips, but I think for the 3" gun, the Bantam grips will get the nod. They are inexpensive enough that if I don't like them I'm not out a fortune.
Of course now I probably have to start paying attention to all those K/L grips listed in the for sale section here.

Based on the information you provided, you did very well! I really enjoy my 64. It is a 4" though. 3" guns are a hot thing now! I picked up a 3" 36 last Sat at gun show. It is fun to shoot! Bob

The only thing I'd have liked better than a 3" K frame would be a 36-1 3". I think I've seen one for sale in the past few years and it went in less than a day.

Unless you insist buying in person, you can find these many places online right now.
