Default Painful Combination

I was at the range yesterday focusing on felt recoil of the Buffalo Bore 20B/20 (125g .38 Special +p) versus other ammunition I had on hand. Since the specs show terminal performance approaching .357mag levels, I had a couple types of .357mags with me. I went back and forth between the five different types of rounds testing the felt recoil.

The point of this was that I shot quite a few .357s and had my Crimson Trace LG-308 Lasergrips on the gun. Never turned on the laser; it wasn't the focus of the day. In my normal grip, the laser bump rests just above my right index finger. After a number of cylinders of .357s, this protrusion tore off the top layer of skin on my finger. It doesn't happen with .38s of any flavor, but those full house .357s got to be painful.

My lesson learned is that if I intend to shoot a fair amount of .357s, I will use my Hogue Monogrips instead. If I want to practice with the lasergrips, I'll restrict myself to (mostly) .38s.

Probably had something to do with the size of the gun as well. I'm guessing it was a 357 J Frame? I don't think you mentioned the gun you were shooting.

Sorry. Was my 686SSR. I don't know if I need to squeeze my hand harder on the grip, or what. It's the second time this has happened to me....

I shoot a 686SSR with the OEM wood grips, those gray colored JM style ones that came with the gun, and find it quite comfortable even with hot loads. I shoot middlin' 38s for most of my practice, but find the OEMs to be good for anything I feed the SSR.

I agree with you completely MTKTM. I like the OEM wood grips for 38s, but not so much for 357s. When I want to shoot a lot of 357s, I usually install the Hogue Monogrips that came with the gun. However, for HD, I usually have the CT Lasergrips on the gun. I just forgot to swap them out before I went to the range. A painful lesson...
