Default Law Enf Model 60

Does Smith offer a model 60 without internal lock? Do they sell direct to officers with department letterhead? Any advantages to that?

Any comments on one or more of the above inquiries would be appreciated.

Highly unlikely. If they made a 60 without the IL, they would offer it to the public as well. The only revolvers S&W seems to make without the IL are DAO centennial style revolvers. I certainly could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

I found a 642 without the lock and they are out there. S&W make both a lock and a lock free model!

They are close to a 60 and speaking for myself would have no problem using that in place of a 60 with a lock. (Actually any revolver with a lock)

I also have an older 60 and a couple other small frame guns but find the 642 (to me) is a better all around carry piece.

Quite easy to find one on one of the many websites or in your LGS.

There are no current production external hammer S & W revolvers without the lock. Plenty of used ones out there if they are approved for carry.

Which model 60-? would be the latest/greatest without the IL? I realize these aren't collectables, but always wanted to pick up a model 60 like a lot of the old timer detectives carried when I first started on the PD. Thanks for the input. If there's a preferred earlier model, I'd be interested in your thoughts. Then I'll start perusing theLGS and the Internet.

IINM the -7 was the last "old school" M60, 1 7/8-inch barrel, .38 Spl, old style frame, forged & flash-chromed hammer & trigger, no MIM parts, firing pin on the hammer, and traditional wood Magna stocks. They last made them sometime in 1995 when the new J-Magnum frame (.357) was introduced.

Here's a picture of a -7 just posted by a gent from Portugal on the "when was it made" thread....
