Default Opinions on 64-2 with 2" barrel for $450

Going to look at a 64-2 with a 2" barrel for $450 listed in 90% condition.

Thoughts on the revolver? Are these typically in stainless or matte stainless?

Pics of your gun? Is $450 a reasonable price if the gun just has some light cosmetic issues?

Grip recommendations?

I am not familiar with this revolver, so any information would be appreciated. I am considering it because I would like something larger than a J-frame.

Thank you.

BTW: serial number is listed as BAN25XX.

Should have a brushed "satin" finish. Up close you should be able to see some fine "brush" marks. If it's totally matte or looks sand blasted, it's been refinished.

$450 is fair for retail, plus/minus $50. The 2-inch M64 will sell for a premium over the more common 4-inch. Many of the 2-inchers are ex-LEO and have a bobbed hammer and are DAO.

Be advised, though it is a snubby, it's all steel and still a pretty hefty hunk of metal, especially when compared to an AirLite or Airweight. I have a 2-inch M64 and do pocket carry sometimes when wearing a jacket or coat, but it really wants a belt and holster.

If the gun is sound mechanically, I'd say that price is very fair. The short barrel snubs are fetching top dollar. Don't get any better than a 2" K frame.

64-2

What KLYDE said!

I love my 2" model 10 (the blued brother of the model 64.)

$450 sounds ok if it's in good working order.

Can't help to much with stocks/grips as I'm going through trying to find what I like best. So far the Hogue Bantams are nice, but they are rubber and "sticky" so put some clear nail polish on them. Right now I'm using the stock Magnas with a Tyler T grip adapter.

I pocket carry mine on occasion, but it's more of a belt gun.

Here's a photo of it next to my 642. It's not the best (makes the J-frame look bigger.), but I can't take better one right now.

Nothing beats a 2" K-frame in my book. They are simply ideal for so many things. Especially older ones. My second revolver was a 2" Model 10 and I still have it and treasure it. I need to take pictures because I have 4 or 5 and they're all wonderful. For a belt gun I love them; I just don't pocket carry them but for a hidden gun on my belt they're excellent.

I'm a little surprised the M64 is $450 but prices are up, as we all know, and in this concealed carry age snub guns do demand premiums.

I like Magnas with T-grips for everything; I'm just old fashioned that way. Not all of my guns have them but that's just a matter of laziness on my part. The ones I carry either have them or have stocks similarly shaped. My original M10 has full grips for that reason.

You can't go wrong with that 2" K frame!

Here's my track (sorry, no up-to-date chart yet):

Smith & Wesson 64 2 in Barrel. Revolver in .38 Special. Blue Book of Gun Values (35th Edition) indicates between $275 in 95% condition and $515 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 32 recorded prices for this model gun from $300 to $750 over a period of 5 Yrs 6 Mos ending September 27, 2014. The average price as of that date was $444. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $689.

The last 7 prices I have for this model since 6/3/2013 range from $300 to $750 averaging $557. The average price is increasing, so, as others have posted, if it checks out, it's not a bad price in my opinion.

I owned this dash two for a while:

I have had 3 Model 64's with 2 inch barrels. The first one was in very great condition with matching numbered original grips and a pinned barrel. Paid about $500.00 for it but had it shipped so had around $560-$600 by the time I was done with it and had replaced the stocks. Put Pachmayr Compaqs on that one and like them a lot. Sadly that one walked off with someone else due to some circumstances out of my control.

Next one was a California Dept of Corrections trade in picked up for $350 and then finally a Brinks trade in with the bobbed hammer/DAO for around $305 after having it shipped.

I do like the Hogue Bantam Grips a great deal and have that on one of them.

The other is going to sport a set of Ahrend stocks when I can lay my hands on them.

Price seems in the ballpark, especially if it has no Dept type markings on it, and you will enjoy the way it shoots.

Sounds as if you're on the right track. These are great revolvers, but huge guns for concealment. For shooting, however, they are much easier to shoot well than a snubnose J-frame. The added bulk is very forgiving when it comes to masking our shortcomings and they are more comfortable to shoot than a small-framed gun.

The $450 asking price isn't out of line. A while back there was an influx of CDC marked 2" 64's and "select" quality examples could be had for around $400. I picked one up for $389 but the shipping and transfer fee bumped the grand total up into the $450 price range. The gun was pretty clean but not a 90% example.

I recently swapped the Compacs for Hogue Bantams, both are suitable grips but I shoot better with the Hogues...

If you have small hands, I'd recommend Craig Spegels Boot Grips or the synthetic copies of the same grips by Uncle Mikes, if you can find them.

Well I just paid $450 out the door for a 4" 64-3 that is in really great shape. I feel the 2" guns are bringing slightly higher prices. Also my -3 sold new in Sept. '83 so the one you're looking at has to pre date that, not from '89.

S&W started using the "B" s/n prefix in 1988. It's possible the OP's gun had a out-of-sequence s/n, S&W does that, but seems unlikely in an otherwise plain-Jane M64. I just checked the SCSW and a 1989 gun should be a -4, so it beats me. Maybe we'll hear back after the OP has a chance to look at it in person.

Regarding grips. I also have the Hogue Bantams on mine. They're great. The Uncle Mike boot grips and combats are pretty sweet too. UM's aren't made anymore, so used is the only option there. Hogues are still ~$16 a pair everywhere fine neoprene is sold.

Got a 97% no dash about 3 months ago for $400 I don't think the guy knew what he had. It was listed on a local forum and I believe all his reply's were going to his spam box as it took me about 2 weeks to finally reach him and he still had the gun. For grips magnas and Tyler T

For grips I was looking at the smooth "Hideout" grips that Brownells has listed for under $20.

I have one on a 66-4 with a 2.5" barrel and they look great.

There was just about a dozen or so that sold on gb in the last couple weeks. They were all cdc 64-4 snubbies and bunch even had original boxes and they were all 385 with free shipping if I recall.

I bought mine from my sister-in-law for $250. I guess that means I'm on her good side. She said she couldn't hit the side of a barn with it and she was glad to get rid of it. I haven't tried shooting barns with it, but I have no trouble hitting things that are much smaller. I made a leather pocket holster for it and it actually conceals well in a pocket, though it is a bit heavier than my 340PD. Overall it's a very versatile and utterly reliable revolver. It's the least expensive handgun I own with which I'd absolutely trust my life.

These are great little guns, shoot to POA, and are more accurate than they should be. Sexy, too!
