My 686 found its way home.
I bought a new 686 at the beginning of this year to use as a nightstand gun. It was my best shooter and my favorite gun.
However, after losing my job in May, I had to make some unpleasant decisions, and I sold the 686 because I knew I could get more for it than for my other revolvers. I placed an ad and sold it to a man a few towns away.
Now that I'm working again, I was browsing ads and happened to see a 686 for sale by the same person. I contacted him and ended up getting my 686 back for the same price that I had given him when I sold it. He wanted the money for an AR build, and a revolver didn't fit his needs.
So, here again is my beloved 686. To celebrate, I'm thinking about getting a nice set of wood grips since I've never really liked the Hogues.

I've had this 686-2 for a year now, purchased from a friend and co-worker. Years ago, he put these Pau Ferro stocks on, and I really enjoy them. These came from Smith.

I love that silver/black wood. I have diamond magnas the same color on my model 10 snubby.

Snap - glad you are reunited with your 686. Better still that you are back to work. Just thought I'd point out that the grips pictured are not Hogues. They are either Uncle Mike's or whatever Smith is using currently - the source of which I am unaware.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Pizza Bob, I guess you are right in that they are not Hogues. They are the original stock grips, but they are unmarked. I have seen them referred to as Hogues when talking about the 686-6, but maybe it was in a more generic sense meaning "rubber grips".

I am considering these. They are on Gunbroker, so I'm not sure what brand they are. The combat grips look like they might be a bit bulky for smaller hands. Are they? If these are too bulky, I may just get a nice set of magnas.
I've emailed Altamont to see if they have anything similar because I'd feel better getting them directly from a reputable company than somebody on GB.

Heh. They are from Altamont, and Altamont is selling them for cheaper than the random GB seller.

Snap - had a set of those on my 646 (checkering pattern slightly different)
Nice BBQ grips, but for shooting, not so much. Just didn't fit my hand correctly. For guns I shoot a lot, I prefer "Goodyears", but if I go wood, it is usually Hogue. Hogue makes wood grips with and without finger grooves, or with just a top finger groove. Also multiple textures and decorative end caps. Good luck with yours.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Congrats on getting it back. I've had this happen with a bass guitar once.

First, congratulations on finding the job. Next, Getting any 686, not to mention your own 686, is great.
Enjoy, Frank.

Sorry for the thread drift, but...
@H.Richard - those appear to be older Hogues, by virtue of the finger groove definition. Does the attachment hardware on those require removal of the grip locator cross-pin at the base of the grip frame?
I have a similar pair that have a crest mounted on the R/S and was told that they were made by Guy Hogue himself (this was by someone that would know).
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Re: OP. Glad to read that you are again working. As well, wonderful that you were able to buy your revolver back at a price that satisfied the man who first bought it from you. Very cool!

Glad you got your gun back. Nothing wrong with the original grips. T ake your time and find the right wood at the right price.

This is what I went with for the grips/stocks. I got a good price (not a great price), but it's an investment. Now to get it to the range and practice shooting with them.
