A LGS quoted me $650 plus tax for a 357 with a 2" barrel. Is this in line with what others here on the forum are paying?

That's what they're asking for on Gun Broker, but not many are being sold. Last month, 3 sold for about $500 - plus you need to pay shipping and CHL transfer fee, but not usually tax.

NIB prelock? How much less do you want to pay? What better handgun can you get for less $?

One more comparison point: About 18 months ago at the height of the buying frenzy I bought a 640 at a gun show. It was a large gun show in a large city, but this was the only 640 in the entire show (I looked at every table). I paid $650 plus tax plus show ticket plus parking. I won't tell you how much less I had paid for my other daughter's 640 about ten years ago - but those days are gone.

Last week I paid $475.00 for one offered here on the forum. I don't have it yet but from the photos and write up it appears to be a solid revolver. It looks as if it needs a good DEEP cleaning though.

I just had a VERY lightly used 640 sitting in consignment for 2+ months in CT at $470, and couldn't get a buyer to save my life. The new ones in the other case were about $670 if I recall correctly. If you're open to getting a used one, it seems like a lot of people are dumping smaller summer carry guns this time of year, as it's the bigger ones that are now vanishing from the cases around here. Bad for those of us trying to sell, but maybe good for you?

I'd really prefer a used gun. Am a bit concerned a 357 may have been abused. [I bought some used brass that was so bulged near the rim I had to disassemble my sizing die to travel clear to the rim. And now the brass is weak..........will bulge sometimes when seating bullets. I've addressed this in another post under "reloading".] Thanks for the replies so far. I'll do my homework about buying used revolvers and go from there.

Last month a seller on Gun Broker (I think the name was Sportsman's Supply - said to be a very big internet seller) sold three 640's for between 490 to 500. They charge only 15 for shipping. They haven't offered any 640's since, and I bet they won't for quite a while. Still, sellers are ASKING 650 to 690 for NIB 640's but most auctions end without ANY bids. You can buy used for 400.

If I found a 640 for $400 I would be all over it (as long it wasn't abused).

Whenever I see any used j magnum (60/640/649), around here it's hovering around the $500-600+ range. Never see them lower. And 90% of those are model 60's with the IL.

And since nobody else jumped on the opportunity to post one, here goes. 640-1



Oh, and Old Bear...I was keeping my eye on that particular 640. Deciding if I needed 2 of them. Good thing I didn't grab it as I really needed tires for my car a lot more. Looks like it'll clean up nicely.

There's one on Gun Broker right now for $425 and free shipping. It looks OK.

FWIW, I just paid $600 + tax at my LGS for a brand-new 640-3 a couple weekends ago. They had it marked for $650 and were willing to knock off $50 for me.

I don't see used 640 models come up around my area very often, even with the colder weather and people moving to larger wintertime CC options.

Here is my Centennial I purchased for just over $400. I has not been fired much. I feel like I got a good deal. I'm not up to date on all the prices, but $600 seems high to me.

M 60's can be purchased for $600.00.

I'd personally rather have the 640 as opposed to the 60, and they are both fine guns. I have both and I own the first 640-1 I ever saw in a gun case. That happened within the past year, and I've been looking in gun cases and on tables at gun shows for a great many years. I prefer the centennial style J frames over the ones with hammers, and I much prefer the longer length barrels as opposed to the 1 7/8" found on many J Frame models.

I'd ask you this question, how many 640's have you had the opportunity to buy? Have you asked if the LGS will accept a slightly lower offer? Many times cash money speaks! I've got a 640 now, and it would be very hard for me to walk away from another. That's a choice you have to make, and you MIGHT find another somewhere. I have noticed that they are not getting any cheaper as time goes by. So what's it worth to you? Doesn't matter what it's worth to any of us. If it suits you and meets your needs or wants, I say it's the best investment you are likely to be able to make. You can make a good investment and be able to enjoy it by shooting it anytime you wish!!
