Default Model 19-5 2.5" CT State Police value?

I'm not much for asking for values, but I picked up a nearly mint Model 19-5 snubbie 2.5" round butt a ways back. It is an AYY*** serial number, indicating it was manufactured for the Connecticut State Police. This revolver has the matte blue finish similar to the Model 28 and the same as the DSS contracted guns but with wooden grips instead of the rubber ones that came on those. While I love this revolver, I would never fire it. It's much too nice, and I'm becoming of the mindset to let some of the "collection" go and get something I will play with. There's honestly not a blemish on it. Slight turn ring and "drag" from cylinder going in and out, but I'd say it's been shot VERY LITTLE. Anyone have an idea of the value behind these? I think I "stole" it when I got it, but if I do end up releasing it back into the wild I want to be fair on it while still getting me closer to my "goal" for my next purchase.

Any help is appreciated. I've not seen many in this configuration to know where its "premium" if any is.

How does this serial number indicate it was made for the Connecticut State Police?

The matte blue round butt 2.5"and AYY. These were government runs as far as I understand it.

I just bought a 2.5 inch M66-2, which matches the M19-5.
They both date to the early 1980's, and were the engineering change that eliminated the P&R.
Mine was little shot, and cost $725 on GB.
It is no longer little shot.

Best,
Rick

My Latest Acquisition: DSS Model 19-5
Another State Department DSS model 19-5 snubby
Diplomatic Security Service??

All sorts of info on the DSS guns. If I keep digging I believe the ANN serials were DSS guns while the AYY are thought to be a contract for Connecticut state police.

When I joined the CSP in 1980, we were issued the blackened model 66's, as noted in an earlier post. I am not sure what the plain clothes guys were carrying, other than some were carrying snub .357 revolvers. There is a web site maintained by the CSP for active / retired members. You might want to get on it, and ask if anyone remembers the specifics of their issue snubby gun. It might help you in your "AYY" confirmation.

Larry

The product code for the CSP guns was 100728. AYY s/n's. The two I've seen both had a ship date of August 10, 1988.

They're pretty plain Jane looking. No emblems or engraving. No numbers or anything about Connecticut. Matte blue like the OP states.

I'd value one in the $600 to $750 range in the condition the OP states. Maybe a bit more for an original box and/or presentation case. A really neat Magnum K-frame.

jagr,

one of the mods on the Forum knows so much about model 19's it will blow you away.

maybe you'll get lucky and he'll chime in about the CSP thing.

RE the market price...if you are loosing any sleep b-c you think you "stole it", you know where to send the funds

seriously, i think you can sell it for about $50 more than i sold it to you. not much more in my opinion.

good luck. and by the way...it's not too nice to shoot.

trust me

Ha, thanks for chiming in. I still think it's too nice. I'd keep it where it is if I didn't have a new toy to fund.

Resurrecting an old thread....

I have just come into possession of a model 19-5, 2-12" barrel with an "AZZ" prefix serial number. This gun has plain Jane front and rear sights, not RR/WO.

The gun belonged to my brother-in-law who is a retired LEO from CT and was purchased new by him. It was carried and shot very little. As such, the gun is priceless to me.

I was reviewing this thread about special serial number series for the 19-5's and was wondering if the AZZ prefix carried any particular significance aside from the fact that it was produced in 1988 which, as I understand, is the last year of the "-5" model production run.

(Sorry for the ****** cell phone pic......)

Nice 19! And thanks for bringing up an old thread to rub salt in the wounds! Your revolver, however, does not look to be a matte finish as was the AYY 19 I used to have unless it's just a flash from your pics. The AYY was a real matte blue like the Model 28 possesses, while yours appears traditional polished blue. One of two guns I wish I hadn't sold and it's still fresh in the memory.

Jagrmaister-

My 19-5 is, indeed, a polished deep blue....almost black.

It doesn't appear that the "AZZ" prefix has any real significance but the gun is in great shape from a mechanical standpoint as it has been fired very little, minimally handled, and stored in the gun safe.

I'm very fortunate to have acquired this piece....it will continue to be well cared for, but it will be shot!

I will try to take some better pictures and post them in the next few days.

Interesting how this thread has ebbed and flowed.....

Good luck with your hunt for the 19-5. I hope it turns out in your favor.

I have taken mine on virtually every range trip since the its acquisition. With the set of Spegel’s that I bought specifically for this gun, it’s one of the softest shooting handguns that I own. Due to its provenance, I just can’t bring myself to carry it, though.
