I am trying to pick my Christmas gift for an 8 round wheel gun. Does anyone have either one and could maybe steer me in a particular direction.

A choice between smith and taurus is no choice at all. The R8 rocks, grab that one.

The R8 - had one. If there is such a thing as a "tactical" revolver, this is it.

Im thinking the same.....just curious if it is worth the double cost....608 is approx $620 R8 is approx $1200

I owned both. The Taurus is fun and the trigger was decent but for the money, I would go for the R8. You can do more with the R8 than the Taurus. When the time comes to sell, the S&W will sell for more and hold more of its value.

While I do not own an M&P R8, I do own the TRR8. I also own a few other variations of the model 327



I can tell you that the 327 family of revolvers is probably the most accurate 357 Magnum revolver design S&W has ever produced. The use of the multi-piece tensioned barrel makes them shoot amazing groups. This is almost an identical design to what made the Dan Wesson revolvers so formidably in Metallic Silhouette competition. The DWs had the additional feature of being user swapable.

There is zero doubt in my mind that I would be willing pay double the price of a Taurus 608 for a Performance Center 327 revolver.

Of course comparing a Smith to Taurus on a Taurus forum people in the know most likely would also recommend S&W! The biggest advantage S&W has over a Taurus is quality!

Get the Smith. With that said Smith makes other 8 shot 357's. The R8 is more expensive because of the Scandium frame. You can get one of the stainless 627 variants for less money than the R8. They do cost more than the Taurus but it is an option but I wouldn't be able to pass up an R8 I have one on my wish list.

That Taurus is a blast to shoot. Wear a steel suit if you shoot 357 from her.

No question that the S&W is going to be the better of the two guns that you have chosen. If money is a consideration and you intend to keep it long term, the Taurus will serve you well and probably last longer than you will. It's a pretty good weapon but it will never be as respected as the S&W.

There are a few more options for an eight rounder, the 627 PC, 627 Pro Series, and the 327 TRR8.

Hmm? Is that a true legacy or just something we got used to saying? Seems to me that as more CNC and less hand fitting and labor in general is used in the industry, the more the guns differ from their old reputations. The prices tell the story to some extent, but guns made in the NE US are going to cost more.

You wont regret it! I got mine used with about 1,000 rounds through it for around $1,000 last year. Had to send it to smith for light strikes, but less than a two week turn around. Appears the P.O. had messed with the trigger bubba-style. Anyways, never an issue with it

The stock grips are great and I would use them if I had to ever carry it, but for my purposes, hogue big butts are the best revolver investment so far. theyre amazing grips.

This thread got me to realize that these 8-shot guns are N-frames, which I never carry concealed. S&W describes them as large frame (=N). If I carried a gun that big, it would be 6-7 rounds of a larger caliber, probably 44 Special.

I do hope the OP enjoys this awesome gift. I just wonder what a civilian does with a tactical rail gun in .357 that is too big to carry concealed and too loud to shoot indoors, if necessary. Would love to shoot it though. I just read these threads and naturally try to relate to some of the choices. The 327 would have suited me better. Hopefully, sharing what I am selfishly thinking doesn't offend anyone.

If I was receiving the gun as a gift, I'd certainly want the S&W(although gigantic guns like that aren't really my thing.) If I was buying it with my own money, however, I would give the Taurus a try first. The "this brand is great, and that brand sucks" approach can have real drawbacks, as it's somewhat simplistic. Ask some of the folks who've bought a S&W model 69 (.44 mag) recently about that.

I see many really expensive consignment guns for sale at the gun shop, and they often just sit and sit and sit, regardless of the level of quality of the gun. People originally bought those guns with the idea that if they ever need to sell them, it'll be easy because quality always sells. But quality only sells, everything else being equal, and $600 vs. $1200 is not equal. Taurus doesn't have the quality of S&W, but they can have good designs. Sometimes their lower QC lets guns go out the door that shouldn't but they have a lifetime warranty, and tend to make things right.

I have a Taurus 1911 that was on super discount and I got it for about 50% the cost of the cheapest Colt and 65% the cost of a Ruger. It's an outstanding gun, so I made the right choice. If 1200 is no financial hardship, buy the Smith. If it is a financial hardship, buy the Taurus...but just beware there's a possibility it might have to go back to the factory for tweaking.

Jim NNN, maybe if you'd have filled in at least some of your profile(or at least tell us something about yourself) I'd know where you're coming from but, your strong opinion of the two guns in question leads me to question what your motives are? Just what IS your back ground? As the OP asked do you have any experiences (or own)with either?

That person also doesn't claim to have owned either of the models the OP asked about. But for some reason, you're not curious about him (her) or what background he might have. I would call my opinion an alternate opinion rather than a strong one. I have no doubt that a Mercedes is a better car than my mini van, but that doesn't mean I should buy a Mercedes. Same with guns.

I own about a dozen old Smith and Wesson vintage/classic revolvers and a couple of their newer pistols, but only three Taurus handguns, so that should reveal my preferences. But I consider them all good guns.

Well lots of guys use them for shooting ICORE matches I use mine for target shooting and I can open carry it if I desire. Do you also wonder what civilians do with railed AR15's?

Spare the cheap shot. I have an AR-15, and its rail includes a scope, laser, and flashlight. I don't actually use it, because it is a war gun...or SHTF if you will.

BTW I have no idea what ICORE means or entails. Maybe you could elaborate.

Not if it's like the old guns. My 441 shoots single hole groups at 15 yards.

Everyone is a comedian ...... if you read the whole thread i already picked up the R8 and am ordering the taurus....both is better ... pineapples are a little more fruitecakish then an 8 round lifetime warrantied revolver....IMO

Once you've got both make sure to do a range report. I know I'd be interested in hearing from someone who has shot both.

At__liberty, ICORE is a shooting competition for revolvers only. Similar to IPSC. I use a TRR8 but not the rails.

Just put a hi viz fiber optic sight on her....

I have to say she's a real soft shooter in .357 and .38 feels like a .22 ....shoots softer then the R8 but has a heavier ported barrel
