That's a nice package. I think it was made around 1980.

Your M29 was made in 1980 - 1982 time frame. Some of the last "N" serial numbers. Never seen a factory leather case like that. Pretty cool. I think Sgt. Callahan would of approved.

Nice setup; I suspect the case is aftermarket if that is your question.
As an aside, the movie gun was a 6.5". Did you buy this one?

Nice find but???? Let's clear this up. Maybe.
I hear stories that Harry used a 8 3/8" m29. Then they show Harry's m29 in the national fire arms museum it's a 6 1/2'' barrel.
Confusing?
Here's what I think. He used both. In the camera shots were the bad guy is on the ground and were looking up at Harry with the gun it's the longerv8 3/8" barrel that makes the m29 look so much bigger. The normal shots of the m29 is the 6 1/2" barrel. But that angle shot of the 8 3/8" barrel does look impressive.

Something often overlooked and never discussed here in these threads is the six inch barrel used in the last two Dirty Harry movies.Unless those two don't count as Dirty Harry movies.

This has been (exhaustively) discussed...the movie poster above shows a 6.5" but the perspective (and lens?) makes the barrel look longer. There is at least one other poster (from Magnum Force?) that used an 8 3/8" version. Not in any movie scenes though...
Can we please close this thread now, before it spirals out of control?

You promoted Dirty Harry. Callahan was an Inspector (a Detective). in any event, you're right - he would've approved.

Your dreaming, hoping or wishing?
It's not the length of the barrel it's how accurate you are with it.

I read an article about the 6 vs. 8 3/8 issue years ago. He used both. The 8 3/8 barrel revolver was used for "effect" in some scenes whereas the 6 inch was his normal "carry" gun.

You're right, he mostly carried a 6 1/2 inch barrel. For some shots however, they did use a 8 3/8 inch barrel.

I watched Dirty Harry on TV, again, last night. When the new recruits at the range asked him what he used in his .44 Magnum, he said, ".44 Special-light...it reduces recoil." I had forgotten that line.

That was Magnum Force; in an interview Eastwood admits he botched the line but they went that take.

Yep, you're right. It was Magnum Force, about the rogue motorcycle cops on the force. Now I'm wondering what the line was supposed to be? I took it to mean he used light .44 Special loads in his gun to cut down on recoil.
And thanks for the correction.....

OK. Here's the REAL skinny. In the original Dirty Harry movie, Eastwood used a 6.5"-barreled Model 29. NOT a 6" and NOT an 8 3/8". However, in publicity photos and posters, an 8 3/8" was often portrayed for effect.
Case closed.

The script reportedly stated "a special light load", and he said "a light special load".

Congrats OP, great catch!
I sense a little envy, or am I mistaken?
This is a friend of mine's, I get to shoot it, I envy it's his and not mine. Is that the same thing?

Sorry for the delay in answering posts,
Yes I am the original and only owner, I actually bought 2 of these
and gave one to my Brother-In-Law.
It came from S&W exactly as shown, in the leather zipper case, with the tools and 50 rounds of ammo.
It has been in my gun safe since the mid 80's and I was going through my collection of oldies but goodies, and thought it might bring some smiles to a few older faces.

The 8-3/8" version is depicted in the movie posters. In the movies he only ever used a 6-1/2" Model 29...except for the Auto Mag in 'Sudden Impact'.

You are correct that multiple barrel lengths were used in different shots.
The one that we have on display here in the NRA National Firearms Museum is one of the "shorter" ones that was most definitely used in the movie and is on loan to us from writer John Milius. We also have the rubber prop M29 on display as well.
