Hoppe's is a copper solvent (not a supper aggressive one like modern cleaners, but it still is a copper solvent). It won't directly hurt the nickel, but if there are any scratches through the nickel finish it could in theory get under the nickel and eat away at the copper substrate. Nickel guns are first plated with a thin coat of copper and then nickel, this is because nickel will not stick to bare steel, but copper will.

I did look at both of them with a loop. They look like deep buffer grooves, not cracks. I didn't notice the barrel being off until I read another thread here and went and checked mine. It is not off by much, but I can notice it with my old eyes. It is easily spotted where the top strap of the barrel meets the frame. It is not even on both sides.

When I got my model 25 classic I checked it over very well before I accepted it and it became registered I bought it from Buds and it was shipped to a local ffl dealer Buds would accept a return if the gun wasn't registered but once it was it is your problem.luckily it was ok but the risk of buying without checking is a chance you have to accept.

I clean the barrel and cylinder with Hoppe 9 but wipe the frame and barrel
With wd40 there's not much more than fingerprints externally so using any kind of cleaner is not necessary

I bought mine from gunbroker from a place called 'snake river arms' When I called them to verify they had the gun before bidding, the guy told me he had one NIB that he hadn't even opened or looked at. He wanted me to do the deal off the gunbroker site and said he would knock off $20 if I did it that way. I did the deal, and now regret it. Bad bluing, canted barrel. I believe that he knew exactly what it looked like and was trying to get rid of it on the internet. I will never buy from them again, and I doubt I will ever buy a gun that I cannot hold and look at first hand before buying. I have owned Colts and Rugers for many years, never a single problem from them. I am looking now for a 29-2, which is what I have actually wanted for years anyway.

Received My Re blued 29-10 back
I received my 29-10 back after a long wait, I am happy. The milky dull splotching is gone and it has that deep dark glossy look all over it, looks amazing. There was no cost on my end, just a long wait. The gunsmith indicated that it was re polished and re blued.

Mine looked exactly like yours. The LGS where I bought mine is in the his basement & the lighting is terrible. When I got home & wiped it down I saw how bad it was. So I called S&W & sent it back. I got it back in exactly 2 weeks & it looks perfect! Whatever they did to it they did a great job!

Since my issue went away after putting a couple hundred rounds through it, I wonder if heating it up with a blow dryer might have worked too?
