Default Model 27-7 are they out there?

One of my Grail guns is a Model 27-7. It is an 8 shot made for Bangers Dist. in the year 2000. They made 100 4" barrels and 100 6-1/2" barrels. This is according to the 3rd ed. of the S & W Standard Catalog, page 195.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever seen one or owned one? I wonder what they would be valued at?

IMHO a Smith & Wesson 8 shot, 4" barrel, .357 revolver is the ultimate handgun. Period.

Harrydale

The Bangers 8 shot are Performance Center guns. The model 27-8 were P.C. with a 3 1/2" barrel, ramp front sight, Magna stocks, also 8 shot, blue or nickel. They also made a 5" barrel, gold bead front sight, target stocks, in blue or nickel.
The model 627-5 is also an 8 shot with a 4" heavy barrel, red ramp front sight, Houge grips but not P.C. I like the feel of the 627 best. I have the 4 and 6 1/2 inch Bangers. (not for sale)

I've seen a bunch of -8's, but never a -7. One hundred of each is a pretty tiny issue.

I have one of each of the -7's and frankly prefer to shoot an old 27-2 5" with BearHug grips and the smoothest trigger of all of my S&W's.
The -7's came up a little short on the quality of finishing, for example, the checkering if the top strap is pretty shallow and looks more like it was scratched in than machined...also could have been given a better polish before bluing. Nevertheless, as pointed out, 100 is a very small population and these stay in my safe as "special interest" guns rather than shooters.

I own a 4-Inch and it is one of the finest shooting revolvers I have ever owned. They rarely come up for sale these days. It seems like 6-Inch models come up more often. I can’t even remember the last time I saw a 4-Inch 27-7 for sale. The last one I saw at auction (6-Inch) went for $2000! Good luck!

Wow. With only 200 of these 27-7 made I am impressed that I even got to see one and right here is at least 5 that can be accounted for. Thanks for the pictures JSW and the information guys.

I have a four inch 27-7 #75, that I purchased for a duty weapon when they first came out. I tried to order #50 to match my badge number but alas, it was not available. I carried this revolver until I retired in 2013. It led a rough life, I had to replace the rear sight assembly after I fell off a cliff one night during a rainstorm. And again after a antelope kicked it while I was removing said antelope from a fence.

I know a guy locally who owns(ed) more than one of the Bangers 6 1/2" version. The ones I've seen him shoot have been customized for competition shooting....Steel Challenge and USPSA. He likes them for the longer sight radius. So we have guys who customize them and other guys who hoard them hoping to get rich.

Your best bet is to contact Bangers to commission a new run.

When the model 27-7 came my local gun shop did not deal with Bangers. A friend of mine in the S&WCA worked in a gun shop in his state. He ordered the 6 1/2" and had it shipped to my local gun shop, the serial number is under 50. So I had him order me the 4" consecutive number the next week. I got the consecutive number, unfortunately the 6 1/2" have BNG prefix and the 4" have BAG prefix.
I recall when they came out there wasn't a made rush for them, they already had the stainless 8 shot. The local shop got some 27-7 in then and they sat for awhile.
The 627-5 that I really enjoy was also a short run. It wasn't Performance Center (cylinder wasn't cut for full moon clips) and it wasn't expensive.
That was introduced in 2008 S&W catalog and last cataloged in 2009.

I’ve known a couple of guys that got 27-7s for competition shooting. I think they were popular for that when they came out.

I own some as well.

I love the carbon steel, 8 shot, model 27s.

There have only been 6 variations of the carbon steel, 8 shot, model 27s so far. Here is one of each of those six variations. These six revolvers remain unfired since leaving the factory. All six are the same serial number with different prefixes.

Value depends on if you are buying or selling. You would have to offer me a suitcase of 100 dollar bills to make me sell any of the 8 shot 27/327/627 revolvers that I own.

However i would not spend that much to buy one. Value of one I am going to buy depends on which one, condition of the firearm and completeness of the package (box, papers, etc). However a fairly clean, fairly complete one will easily top the $1000 mark on the auction sites.

S&W needs to make a SS version of this gun with a 4" barrel and call it the 627 Mountain gun,
I would request it sans cheesy rollstamp checkering or would pay extra to have real checkering done prior to shipment.

for me it's not about the money. First off I just like 'em. If I would come up with a pratical use it would be for a night house gun. 8 shots and I don't have to give a thought to anything jamming or not feeding right. But bottom line is like I said I just like 'em!

Is it the rarity of this right shot revolver to collectors?
I am sorry to hear that you reserve your sixth shot for suicide. I can not imagine thinking like that.

I own the 27th 8 shot, 357 Magnum S&W ever produced. It is a one owner gun that I have had for close to two decades now. I did not buy it because I thought it would be collectible. I pre-ordered it because it was a fine quality firearm and I like the thought of an 8 shooter. Yes, I have carried my 8 shot n-frames.

Clearly you have never shot one. There is probably no easy way to explain this to you. But I will try

If we look at cars.
If you only want to go 55 MPH and 0-60 in 30 seconds is OK for you, then there is no reason to buy a Chevy Monte Carlo SS when you can have a Ford Pinto for less money. Both can be used to drive you and your significant other around.

It is not the rarity of the Monte Carlo SS that made you buy it. You were not a collector. Was it worth paying the extra dollars over a Ford Pinto?

Sometimes Nicer is just Nicer to have

Congrats and welcome to the forum. Even though this thread was started over 3 years ago and previous post was over 2 years ago, I still enjoy it due to me having #24 of the 4" -7 version.
There's a 4" 27-7 on GB that relisted last PM due to reserve not met. The ending bid was at $2500. Who knows what it'll take to buy it?
Hey tnb, in your pic, are those the original grips that came with your -7?

They are still out there. Picked up 6 1/2" #20 a few weeks ago at our local gun show. Not what I expected to find. Blew my budget for the day.

Keep looking.

Congrats on being the first post on hating on something as awesome as an 8 shot revolver. you must be a blast at parties.

I bought the first (and only) 27-7 I saw for sale in October, 2000. I wanted a 4 incher but the 6-1/2 inch barrel was all the dealer got in.

It is still unfired. I have had an offer outstanding to trade it for a 4 incher in the same condition. Plenty of offers to outright buy the 6-1/2 inch gun from me but no trades have arisen.

I am patient.

Yes, a Model 627 Mountain Gun would make a lot of people happy.

I passed up a 4-inch one on gunbroker today that went for $1695 and am kicking myself. I hesitated because it was without the case and the rear sight blade had been changed to night sights. I think I missed a good deal. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/648556844

At least you wouldn't feel bad about shooting that one. I still haven't fired mine. It's just too nice to turn into a "range gun".. (-:}

As you prolly know, there's another 4" -7 on GB that's been re-listed several times with reserve not met yet. No telling what it'll take to buy it?
I'm watching it for some time now just to see what mine might be worth as it's similar with shipping box, PC case, docs, etc...
I've seen bids as high as $2500 with reserve not being met. Lotsa $$$ but they don't come up for sale very often.

A little late to the party, but I have a 6.5"er (number 38). The fit and finish on mine is very nice - not quite pre-war quality, but still very nice.

I owned a 6.5" barrel version.Equipped it with Nills.Great stuff.If memory serves,it might have been 007.
It now resides in Cali.
I also owned a 27-8 five incher.Another nice gun.

I've been watching that one as well and also saw it approach 3 grand. They originally listed it without the case and I asked about it, and they said they would look for it and send it later if I was the winner. They apparently found it since then.

Since posting this months ago, that particular revolver was taken off gunbroker unsold. I've noticed it's back again and is still unsold after a few rounds of auctions. It's been bid as high as $2500 and not reached its reserve price. It'll be interesting to see if the reserve is ever met or is it stays unsold. Since the last time it was on sale two other 4 inch 27-7s have been sold and went for around $2000 each.

Sweet collection you have.

I can't decide if I love or hate this gun. I just can't make myself shoot it. Too many others to shoot but it does make me a little crazy..

WOW, makes me even less inclined to shoot mine.. Might could see that for a perfect 4", they are more in vogue these days. If a 6.5 sold for that it would sure be a surprise. I know one has been for sale for that price for a long time. Didn't realize it actually sold.

The only thing the 4 inch, dash 7, eight shot, would need to make me want it more than my 5 inch, dash 8, eight shot, would be a gold bead on a Patridge. I am also pretty fond of the target hammer on my dash 8. Obviously not the original stocks. Rarely holstered and regularly shot. #132 of 258 made.

I like the idea of 7 or 8 shots. I was looking at the 357 Redhawk 8 shots. I have the Redhawk in 357/6 shots. It’s a beast.

Crazy money for a late model production smith and Wesson but I I guess I am an accumulator and not really a collector. To each his own .
