Default Big Bore Belly Gun - got to scratch this one off the list.

It took some horse trading and haggling, but I brought this one home the other day:

A nice, but not perfect, 24-3. I haven't had a gun that says this on the barrel since about 1987:

I've wanted one since I saw it on the cover of Shooting Times. I have the issue somewhere.

No, the barrel isn't pinned. I don't care. It shoots like a dream.

I've been reading threads about these. Mine is an ALA prefix, which may or may not be a Lew Horton gun. Doesn't matter to me.

It came with this El Paso Saddlery holster.

Plus, I saw this at work today:

Life is good.

Anybody else have one?

I wouldn't care about a pinned barrel, either. I have guns with them and without them. Sometimes I never even noticed until I got the gun home. Sounds like you picked a winner - a little large for my purposes but a great gun all the same!

Too heavy and too large for a belly gun, unless you're Santa.

24 or 624 in 3" ... Score!

I drove by Shiprock a couple of hours ago, also while working. As a matter of fact, I pulled off just south of the state line on a dirt road and I put 50 rounds through my Triple Lock 44 just for fun. Where did you get your Mod 24?

Congrats!

That is a beast of a snubby but a very nice one.

I hope to have a .44 snub someday.

I really love the look of it in blue steel!
This is as close as I can come. It is a Lew Horton Combat Special, one of "only" 5,000 . . .. I feel so special.
S&W 624 Lew Horton Special 30.jpg
I bought it from a LEO in '96.
It doesn't see a LOT of carry time, but with new defense ammo maybe its day is here.

BTW, there was a tempest-in-a-teapot "issue" with the 624s. It was battled out elsewhere on the forum in 2009.
Short version, as affirmed by Roy Jinks: some were made with the cylinder long enough to accept .44 Magnum rounds. They were recalled to fit shorter cylinders. When that was done, a red-circled "C" was stamped ON THE BOX! No mark was put on the guns. Luckily I got the box and all papers with mine, and the box has the "C". Frankly, if I had purchased it new I would not have had the cylinder replaced. I load a ton of .44 Magnum cases, much of it at Cowboy velocities, and therefore much of it well within .44 Special pressures. I would have been able to use those in this gun and, "YES," they are marked. Might also add to collector value, though that has never been important to me.

That would be a cool configuration.

Since the M27 has a tapped barrel, it surprises me that the first 627s didn't.

I'm not fond of Snubbies I have a 357mag snubbie but now the thought of a 44 spec snubby you have me thinking now.....I think the misses needs one. How's the n frame handle with the shorter barrel?

Belly gun? More belly BUSTER?

I did purchase a new m24-? 6 1/2" barrel in nickel. The last one my lgs had. The nickel got me.

There is a problem having a pistola with .44 Especial on the barrel.

It cause you to have to have more of them.

Great image of Ship Rock!

I do....along with the factory holster...

But I believe the magazine you refer to was Guns & Ammo...

Of course with something as special as a .44 Special, one is never enough...

Got mine new in 1984. Saw the ad in the Shotgun News and immediately put down a deposit. A couple years ago got these perfect KB hide-out grips to replace the factory combats. The combats look nice, but do not fit well for me at all.

Congrats on a great little big gun.

Nice. I carry 44 special. I think it's the best self defense choice.

I have to admit I'm jealous, I've been looking for a snobby 44 special to show off my holsters with and use as a carry gun!

44 Special is nothing to sneeze at. It's a great choice for 3" revolver that is for sure.

Hi, I'm Grayfox and I'm a .44 Special addict.

I've been fortunate enough over the years to stumble into all three barrel lengths of the 24-3 and a 3" 624. All used, all are nice but not perfect and great shooters.
No pics, but I also picked up a 696 a couple of months ago and its fast becoming my favorite of the bunch.
