brand-new 640-3, barrel seems off
Hello guys! First time to the forum, and first post. I just recently got into wheel guns, and after getting a new Model 66 Combat, I just *had* to have a J-Frame.
I recently picked up a 640-3, and pretty quickly installed the Apex spring kit in it ($$ well spent IMO, it did wonders for the DA pull). What I've noticed, and I've tried looking at it in different lighting to be sure, is that when looking at the top of the gun, it doesn't appear that the barrel is installed quite straight, like it needs an ever-so-slight turn to be perfectly centered with the top strap.
Is this something common, something I shouldn't really worry about, something a local gun smith might be able to handle, something I need to send back to Smith?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this,
Hopper

Yeah, I wouldn't mess with it.

I'd get a second opinion from a gunsmith or someone you know is good with firearms to see what they think. Then go from there.
FWIW my 640-1 came from the factory spitting lead out the left side. I had to have it sent back to S&W twice to get it corrected. When it came back the first time not corrected my FFL (who used to work at S&W and Colt) got on the phone with the factory and strongly "requested" that they get it right the next time.

Welcome to the forum!
And welcome to the wonderful world of wheel guns!
Ok, others will chime in, I've never had one with that issue. But I recall there being several threads on 'crooked barrel on new gun'.
Try doing a search. I think you'll find this has been covered in much detail.
In summary; it happens, you call S&W, they email you a shipping label, you send it back to them, they fix it post haste (though remember that they take a two week break this time of year if I recall correctly), and then they send it back to you. It doesn't cost you a cent.
Again, welcome to the forum.
Oh, we like pictures! Feel free to take a quick phone pic or whatever, use the 'Go Advanced' tab below, it will post your pic.

We've had countless threads about this. Shoot it and see if the point of impact coincidence with the point of aim at room length distances (25').
If it does, be happy! If it doesn't, contact S&W.

Wonderful guys, thank you VERY much for the quick replies! I haven't shot it yet to see if it's off, but in eyeballing it, I can see that it's ever so slightly cocked.
And, so that I can say I did, here is a pic:

Hello gang, sorry for the "necropost", but promised I would respond back once my 640-3 was returned by S&W for the overclocked barrel.
Just received it back from FedEx. After a critical OCD inspection, it appears darned near perfect! Looks like they put some rounds through it to be sure, as I sent it in spotless, and the front of the cylinder and the forcing cone have slight burn marks.
Also, total turn-around time from shipping through today was exactly 21 days.
Long story short... I am pleased. My apologies in advance that I didn't take before/after pictures to post.

This ain't a necropost, it's a followup on your thread. A necropost is one someone digs out from a year or more ago and posts in.
Thanks for following up on your thread and I am glad that S&W made it good for you in a reasonable amount of time.
