Need info on a Model 17
I bought an S&W Model 17 from an estate and would like some info on it. It is a Mod 17, 6" barrel. The frame and barrel are blue and the cylinder is I believe stainless steel. The only documentation other than the manual was the end panel of the box. Here is the info from the label...
Model No. 17, Caliber .22, Barrel 6, Fin. B, Stock SB, Features **SPECIAL**, Serial No. BRF 36XX, Product Code 100509, Spec. Ord. 5983 0508
It is a very, very nice pistol with a little discoloration on the face of the cylinder from firing.
I will probably be putting it up for sale, but just want to know a little about it before I do so I can answer any questions that might come up.

Your model 17-7 was made after August 1994. The product code 100509 indicates it is a 6" blued (B), has a target trigger (TT) and target hammer (TH) with square butt grips (SB).
The special order number does not look correct as usually you read these as, Special order numbers = first no is the year, last three no's are the julian date; ie 6311= 1986 the 311th day.
The **Special** is also important. In 1994, S&W produced 200 with two tone features, the stainless steel cylinder and a full underlug. I have no idea what it is worth but it is indeed a special revolver and as you have the original box it should bring a nice return.
I hope this info is helpful.

I have two BFR's in my s/n collection. One shipped in November of 1990 and the other in January of 1991. Yours may of been made in this time frame, and kept at the factory as unsold inventory until 1994, or.... something else. Sometimes the SCSW isn't exact on every detail.
I've seen one 100509 before. It was a -7 with s/n BRC443X, which is correct for 1994. The one I saw had the label marked the same as yours, with "5983 0508" and "**SPECIAL**". It had Hogue grips, a stainless cylinder, and a Patridge front sight.
You should post some pictures of the gun and the label.

If you want to hide the serial number, you may want to obscure the top left barcode...SBRF3618.
Edit to add: the barcode scanners on smart phones make this futile anyway, as I can scan your barcode and read it. Ah, technology.

The only reason I blocked the numbers was because everybody does it. I don't know why.

Thanks for all the input, it is really appreciated.
Where should I go to get a realistic asking price on this revolver. I am not looking to make a killing, but I don't want to get killed either. Just want to be fair.
Thanks

More privacy is better? I've always done it myself because it is nobody's business. Is it a big deal? No.

Seems the blued full underlug 17-7 was the end of the blued frame line,
My guess is they ran out of blued cylinders before they ran out of frames and just used the 617 cylinders .

IMO that is the reason everyone else obscures their serials as we have no such fears on the SWCA side...
unless your selling a stolen firearm....?

While these late full lug, two tone guns are unusual, they are not particularly hot sellers.
One of our fellow members here is a neighbor of mine. He's been trying to sell his for some time without success. I think he finally gave it to his son. His last asking price was $800 as I recall.
Good luck with your sale.
