686-3 midnight black
Hello all,
Came across a 686-3 that seller said was a rare finish. I never seen one like it before, but took a chance and bought it anyway ($635.00). No box. All I can find is the midnight black stainless model (product code 104250). I am assuming that this is one of them. Anyone else have one?? Are they worth more? Any help with this one would be appreciated.
Sorry about the bad photos. ..

Per the SCSW, that is a 4" Black Stainless made in 1989. 1559 were produced. Sounds pretty rare to me.

I'd call Smith with the serial number and see what it left the factory as. Just to make sure you don't have a mis-marked 586. Plus they can give you the sku with the serial number, I believe. Open until 8 pm call now....lol

It is the correct engineering change and SN prefix for the Midnight Black 686. By report the finish was not very durable. One wonders with all the stainless Melonite slides on current autos if they could make a durable black stainless gun now. Nice find!

Overall finish is really good I'd say, only slight ware on cylinder high edges and a scratch behind cylinder release. Just never came across one before. Now the hunt for its 6" brother I guess...

I bought one new in early 90's and finish started to wear away immediately. Sent it back to factory and they sent me a new regular 686, saying they discontinued them because of the poor finish durability.

I had the same experience as saemetric with the new 4" I bought when they first came out. The finish was not very durable even though it looked great. I traded mine off years ago, very content with the 4" no dash 686 I inherited from my father.

One just like that was my first duty gun. I paid $175.00 for it used in 1992.

If they made one now it would have a lock. Not that anyone here cares about that.
