Default I picked up grips for my 66-2. I had never heard of the S&W Grip Company! Have you?

I was browsing eBay and came acorss a pair of combat grips for my model 66-2. I loved the looks of them but when I got to reading the description it went as follows:

"This is for a pair of USED, & Unsual - SMITH & WESSON GRIP COMPANY

Custom Hardwood Gun Grips.

The grip screw is included.

Back in the late 80's early 90's, S&W was briefly in the grip business making their own grips for their guns. This is one of those, stamped on the back with the

SMITH & WESSON GRIP COMPANY

and the S&W customer service number at the time.

These type of grips were also offered as Factory accessory items, and sometimes put on production guns, especially the perfomance center models.

They were also made by reputable outside vendors...These look a lot like AHRENDS made grips, but there is no marking indicating that...so S&W put just their name on them.

The grips are a handsome dark reddish-browns laminated which they sell as Rosewood.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The grips are very nicely done, with a super hand rubbed finish.

These grips are combat style, and I have heard them also referred to as "SECRET SERVICE STYLE" They have finger grooves, and slightly extend the original grip length. They do fill in the portion behind the trigger guard, so your middle finger gives support to improve accuracy and reduce muzzle dip. They are a front wraparound grip, open back strap so the trigger distance is about the same as stock grips andthe natural curve of the backstrap is present.

The grips are marked on the inside with the S&W GRIPcompany logo

These particular grips came off a Model 66-1 - which was introduced in 1977"

I thought the story was cool, so I paid the $59.00 buy it now price for them. Have you guys ever heard of such?

Yes. S&W bought the ACE grip company sometime in the 90s and continued production of ACE's grips. The grips on my 65 LadySmith are made by ACE, but later ones say Smith & Wesson grip company.

I've got three pair of S&W Grip Company grips. I like them a lot, and I think they will be a great adition to your 66-2.

Punisher, those are good looking grips that should help with recoil control. I would be willing to use them on my M - 66. But SAVE the factory grips that came on your M-66.

[QUOTE]How do you have the medallions added?[QUOTE]

Most grip makes offer them as an option when you buy new grips.
I would not try and alter the grips you have, as this would ruin any potential collectors value, down the road.

I drilled hole with drill press and then epoxied "harvested" medallions in place.
