Hello, everyone. I have a shot (pun not intended) at an almost new in box M649. The seller told me he fired less than a box of cartridges through it, and it shows. Locks tight, carries through on all chambers. I'm guessing it was late 90's manufacture as it has MIM lockwork with a frame-mounted firing pin and the integral cylinder stop, but rollmarked (not EDM) nomenclature. It also has the original Uncle Mike's 3-finger santoprene stocks, but a non-original fiber-optic front sight blade. He tells me he still has the factory front sight and will include it with the revolver, however.

So, here's the question: What's a "fair and reasonable" price for it? I'm hazarding a guess that it's somewhere in the realm of at least $400 and up. Any feedback is, as always, appreciated.

I see them regularly for sale/selling around the $500 mark pre owned.

Hi again! Out west by me, figure $550 plus. Maybe you can work on him with that front sight mod, even if he includes the original blade.

Haven't seen one for sale locally for a while, but would say around $500.00 in excellent condition.

They will sell somewhere in the $450 to $600 range, depending on location, condition, box, etc.

Thanks once again for the answers, guys. General consensus seems to be the $500-$550 range, which sounds about right to me. I was also just informed by the seller today that he'd like $495 for it, so he's definitely asking a reasonable price.

The front sight dings the value a little, IMO, but it's nothing a properly sized brass punch and a few deft strokes with a machinist's hammer can't fix.

ETA: Hey, actually, this raises a good question: Is the sight pin "directional"? That is, does it need to be driven out from right to left or vice versa? Or can it be done from either side?

I paid $450 for mine. Changed the grips and added the front sight. Great gun, you'll be very happy with it.

Good deal, Irn-Bru. And thanks, I have a feeling I will. Much as I dislike the cosmetics of the MIM parts, the action on his was superb out of the box. I dare say it was as smooth as the action on my M36 which took many, many live and dry fire sessions to achieve.

And c'mon, admit it. You added the Fiber-Op 'coz you have old man eyes. Looks very nicely done, though.

It is not direction. However, be advised it is smaller than 1/16", the smallest pin punch most sets contain. A 0.04" punch will work. Brownells sells one just for this purpose. A have a 1.4mm punch on order (0.055", should come today, actually) just to see if it would work.

Thanks again, Kernel. Figures it'd take a special, happy little cup-point .040 inch punch sold only by Brownell's.

I'll see about getting one once they're back in stock, or perhaps giving a call to my LGS to see what he'd charge to do the swap.

I just "lucked" into one by me. Similar setup you are describing $375.00 I was VERY LUCKY. Mine is a -3, date of early '99.

Awesome deal, Ginzo. Congrats! Just confirmed today that the one I have my eye on is a 649-3. DOM is likely close to yours.

I owe everyone an obligatory photo, so here it is.

Oh, and pay no mind to that hood ornament. It's a 649-3, and it's a no-lock. I'm thanking my good fortune and not complaining.

$500 for a solid pre-lock J-frame? Sounds like a good deal to me. What else is comparable for the same $?

Thank you! And not to worry, mc5aw and Shorty. I plan to swap it out with the original front sight blade. Maybe at some point, when I have the money, I'll change it out yet again for a Trijicon.

Going to the range tomm. Keep me in mind if you remove it, depending on the outcome, I might give it a whirl, ugly as it is.

I feel like I'm pointing down if I line up the sites like a 3 dot on an auto, but I'm gonna make myself do it tomm to see.

I haven't figured out the sight picture yet on a J-frame.
