Default 25-7 model of 1989

Picked this up today looks brand new. No box or papers 25-7 model of 1989 45 colt 5" barrel with unfluted cylinder. Serial BDS65XX. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Was this a special run? The finish is like a highway patrolman.

Yes,they were a limited run. Last revolver I carried on duty and I still have mine. I also shot it competitively. Great shooter and one of my all time favorite Smith's.

Cool

The recoil shield looks as though it was only fired at the factory. Anyone know how many of this specific model were made. Was it only made in 1989? Sorry about all the questions. Just curios. And need good reasons to explain to the wife as to why I bought it. I would love it if livewire has a graph on this one.

Send it to me and I'll keep it for you so your wife doesn't find out.

Too late my 6 year old daughter snitched on me. I am dreading the list of honey-do's that will come out of this. She is getting tired of my "investments".

Default Well I bought mine brand new when they first came out in 1989.

They were about four and a half bills if I can remember correctly. I was told that they only made two thousand of them. The original stocks they came with were Hogues, not Pachmayrs. Yours definitely looks pretty clean though. I wonder why they changed out the goodyears.

Your model 25 is product code 100924.

2000 examples of this configuration were manufactured beginning during the -7 engineering revision and running through the -9 engineering revision.

The phrase "Model of 1989" indicated the time it was designed and not the year it was made. Many of S&Ws revolvers said "Model of 1989", especially 25s, 625s and 627s. Revolvers marked with that text were made for many years.

The man had that, a 4" 25-5 with some wear on the muzzle and cylinder and target stocks for $650. And a nice shooter 17-3 for $600. I wish I would have had the money, I would have worked a deal for all 3 of them.

I've also seen two with a s/n prefix of BFJ69XX (-9) with Target Stocks and the same matte blue finish.

You committed a theft. Give me your wife's number, I ll offer her $750 for and prove how smart you were on an investment where she made $50.00 in one day.

You did good. Not an excellent buy but a good one. My 25-7 is very accurate. Loves 10 grains of Unique with a 255gr LSWC and a Federal 150 primer.

I can't wait to shoot it, but hesitant too. With as nice as it looks. maybe this will cure me of my 629 dreams. At least for a little while.

I bought one new in 1991 for $329.00.

Its accurate as can be. I use it as my open sight gun shooting hunter sillywet every season since. 9 grains unique behind a 255 swc gives me 900 fps.

One sweet accurate gun.

Enjoy
David

You beat me to it - I was trying to deal on the 25-7 or all 3 but think your FTF trumped my 3 hour drive. Good catch!

I would have liked to have all 3 also. Now he has a 6" & 8" 29-3 for sale now also. But I think I got the better deal.

No, they were all in 45Colt. I am not in the gun buying market now, and from any objective analysis it will serve no logical purpose, but I will have one of these models some day.

Yeah I wasn't looking or needing a 45 colt. But I couldn't pass it up. Even though I really was looking for a 44 mag.

I remember when they came out. They were originally for the Georgia State Police contract if memory serves. The Model 26 was also a variation of them. I always wanted one, as I thought they were the best compromise between portability and ballistics for the .45 Colt.

I got a near mint 25-5 instead at the Great Western Gun Show in Denver around the same time.

They're nice guns. I guess in the 80s many LE agencies in Georgia used the .45 Colt as a duty cartridge. When I was an Explorer with the Douglas County (CO) Sheriff's Department in the mid-late 80s, they authorized the S&W 25-5 for duty. Duty ammo was the 225gr Silvertip in .45 Colt.

Enjoy it!

There were no 25-7s made for 45 ACP, but S&W introduced the 625-2 and 625-3 about the same time. The 625-2s were stamped the Model of 1988 and chambered 45 ACP with a 5" bbl. Then in 1989, the 625-3 Model of 1989 came out with 3", 4" and 5" barrels available. These guns were laser-marked Model of 1989. Later on some 625s were chambered in 45 Colt.

Note: the Model 25s are carbon steel and 625s are stainless.

Absolutely love that gun. I have been flirting with the idea of picking one up. I generally only buy handguns that I carry, but I might make an exception for this one. What is cooler than an unfluted blue cylinder!

Beautiful guns guys!

I bought mine a while ago and gave seven bills for it... I know that's a lot of money for a shooter grade with some marks, a Magna-Ported barrel and Hogue laminated camo grips but my gosh, it's a 5" barreled Colt .45 with a satin finish, unfluted cylinder and one of the most accurate handguns I own. And think about this, there are only 2000 out there in the world to be had.

That is the kind of gun I want to pack to the range and put in my safe. I'll throw on a before and after photo. Makes me smile every time I think about picking it up. Haven't seen one since and I think if I every do, I'll buy that one too.

We called it the Gun-A-Month club. The 25-7 was on the front cover of Guns magazine back in 1989 and gave me a terrible jones for one. In pre-internet days it took me 5 years to get one. A few years later John Linebaugh found one and decided it was his favorite big bore. The cylinders have correct dimensions instead of .454-.456" Smith had used.

Shame about the porting but at least it found a good home.

I was lucky found mine because of a lead from this forum. Mine is a 25-9. Also just picked up another but it is a 25-7. In my part of the country a 45 wheel gun is hard to find. It doesn't matter whether it's lc or acp. My 25-9 is my most fun revolver to shoot.
