Wink 2 1/2 Model 586 in .38 special

I have an unfired 2 1/2" 586 in the box. Any idea how much it is worth? I don't find it in the Blue Book of Gun Values? Thanks...

Does it say ".38 Spl." on the barrel?

What's the dash number? (Open the cylinder, if there is one, it's on the frame with the model number).

If you have the box what's the Product Code, Spec. Ord. number, and s/n?

What kind of grips does it have? (Depending on what they are, could add $200+ to the value).

There is a 4" 586 .38 special now listed on GB.

If it is rollmarked .38 Special on the barrel it may be from one of two Brazilian contracts. There were 586-5's with the serial number prefix of BPY from late 1993 (SO #330X). Or it may be from the second contract from 1997 which were 585-4's (no, I didn't get that reversed - the earlier engineering change was shipped three years after the first contract) with a serial prefix CCE, shipped around Sept 1997 (SO #725X).

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE SEARCH ENGINE ON GB IS NOT 100% RELIABLE---BUT---I FIND THAT THE SEARCH ENGINE ON OUR FORUM IS NOT 100% RELIABLE EITHER. THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING REVOLVER IMHO, SO I WAS EAGER TO TAKE A PEEK AT IT………..

No IL on either the -5's or the -4's.

Here is my Brazil 586-4 that I have modified for IDPA in the Revolver/SSR Division...

I bought mine from a friend with no box or papers. While they are rare from a collector's standpoint they don't seem to be real desirable, probably because of the .38 Special chambering. Most people that buy a 586 to shoot want the capabilty of shooting .357 Magnums through it. Without the accouterments that make it collectable I felt free to modify it to my purposes as an IDPA gun, for which it is perfect.

It has had some judicious stoning done and a Wolff RP main spring and 14# rebound spring installed. The charge holes have been chamfered. The integral front sight snd base have been milled off and a Weigand DX/Classic sight base has been installed with a HiViz green FO blade. The rear sight is an LPA unit. It is a RB and I've installed X-frame grips.

I hope the OP posts a picture of his 2.5" gun.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

That Gun Broker M586 has been there a loooooooooong time. Every time the listing expires, it's renewed. Rinse, repeat.

THAT'S A BEAUTY, Pizza Bob. I LOVE ALL OF YOUR MODS. I LIKE WEIGAND STUFF. YOU ALTERED THE REVOLVER TO SUIT YOUR PURPOSE--THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. I HAVE DONE THE SAME THING WITH PRODUCTION REVOLVERS. ITS NOT LIKE YOU ARE DESTROYING THE MONA LISA…

I THINK THAT THE "BUY NOW" PRICE ON THE REVOLVER IN YOUR LINK IS REASONABLE--FOR WHAT THE GUN IS. IF I COULD "JUSTIFY" OWNING YET ANOTHER .38Spl, I WOULD BUY IT NOW. COLT PRODUCED A PYTHON IN .38Spl ALSO. LIKE ALL PYTHONS, THEY ARE COLLECTIBLE…..

By the looks of that 586 in .38, it sure looks like it has a .357 magnum length cylinder... I wonder if a .357 will slide all the way down into the 586 marked as ..38?

Thanks guys! It's a 586-5. Barrel reads .38 S&W Special Ctg.
The grips are factory rubber. I have the box but I would have to dig it out for the product code. That's weird.. There were only 200 made and not valuable? I have a K-32 masterpiece and it is off-the-chart. 3200+ made.

Default Brazil overrun guns!

Here's all three of the 38SPL 586-5 guns. There were 158 of the 2 1/2
", 23 of 4 1/4" guns and I don't know how many of the 6" guns.

This is the way I bought them in their original boxes!

I bought one in 2002 ( ~ 350), sold in 2003 for $1300. It was made 1994, 158 were sent to US distributors. SN # BRF 3794, there were also 4" and 6" made in 1994, with 25 4"shipped to US distributors. Info is from SCSW 2 nd ed. So some people do consider them desirable/valuable. Be Safe,

I love how almost all of Fugate's Guns are "New in the Box" but You can tell by the front of the Cylinder that they have been fired before(after the Factory).

Something is amiss here. I was under the impression that all the 586-5 Brazil Contract guns had the serial number prefix BPY. Also, they were shipped in 1993 as the SO#'s were 3300 & 3301 for the 4.25" (SKU 103498) and 6" (SKU 103499) guns respectively. Admittedly I couldn't find data for the 2.5" (SKU 103497) guns. Maybe they were produced later with a different serial number prefix. The BRF prefix dates to August of 1994. The BPY prefix is not listed.

The SKU's were consistent between the -5's and the later -4's (1997).

Would love to see a picture of the end label on a 2.5" -5 gun. It would answer a lot of questions raised by vipermd's post. So, if either vipermd, Hal H or jcelect have said picture, could you please post it? Thanks.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Hey Bob
The box for my 2 1/2" gun is trashed and the label is gone but the labels for the 4 1/4" and the 6" show the product code numbers you have!

Thanks. I have several pictures of boxes for the 586-5 in the 4.25" and 6" barrel lengths and the 586-4 in the 6" barrel length. In light of vipermd's post, what will help clear-up any confusion is the box for the 586-5 in the 2.5" barrel. Hopefully Hal H will come through. I just cant imagine a big time gap (as would be the case if vipermd's info is correct) when making a production run of non-standard guns for a single customer.

Thanks for the input - stay tuned.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

PB: I no longer have the firearm/box, so I just called S&W CS. The SN# BRF3794 is correct, DOB was listed as 03/02/1994. The SKU is 103500 according to S&W CS @ 1635 edt. I also checked my bound book and the SN# is the same going as it is going out. Wanted to make sure I had not taken an incorrect #. I went back to SCSW and the Brazil contract sku 2 1/2" is 103497, while the SKU 103500 is a 2 1/2,B, RR. So I see the discrepancy also, but I can only confirm what S&W CS just told me. 800-331-0852. Be Safe,

Be Safe,
The mystery deepens. Sequentially it falls in line with the Brazil guns, which are: 2.5" - 103497 / 4.25" - 103498 / 6" - 103499.

I'm wondering if 9 months down the road Brazil came back with a reorder or a "fill-in" order of the 2.5" guns and by then some component that was used in the first order was no longer available (more MIM maybe?) and they duplicated the gun using the new parts but gave it a new SKU.

The problem with that theory is that the -4 Brazil guns from 4 years later used the same SKU's as the -5's.

Anybody have any theories?

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Sorry to follow my own post, but I just checked the SCSW Product Codes. In that listing 103497, 103498 & 103499 are all specifically designated as Brazil guns and .38 Special. The listing for 103500 simply lists it as 2.5" Blued, Red Ramp - with no caliber designation it would infer that it was .357 Magnum.

In the initial description in the SCSW they do not even list it being made with a 2.5" barrel - just the 4", 6" and 8.375". In the Product Codes by year the only 2.5" listed, other than the Brazil guns, was the 103500 in 1993, while there are multiple variations for the other barrel lengths.

It appears theat a 2.5" 586 is a pretty rare bird regardless whether it is a Brazil gun or not.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Hate to dig up an old thread, but did anyone ever find out more info on the 2.5" BPY marked versions?

Were these guns actually shipped to fulfill the contract or were they specifically earmarked for USA distribution?

Did they all come with wood grips or did some come with rubber and if so, were they S&W marked or Houge?

I missed this thread the first time around. Have to admit I'm jealous.

This is the way I bought them in their original boxes!

How cool is that?! Did the 2 1/2" come with the smooth RB Targets? I like them all, especially that 2 1/2".

The ones I posted pics of(the 2 1/2" is a BPY gun) were order overrun guns. S&W made a specific number of guns to fill the order to Brazil and the guns used to set up the tooling and machines were finished and sold to the USA market. The guns pictured are all in their original boxes and the grips that are on them, I must assume. were on them from the factory. The 2 1/2" gun has the K/L frame Banana grips on it!
