Default 657 3"

I picked up a really nice 41 Magnum in a 3" model.
What I'm wondering is did any of the come from the factory ported?

Default 657

Dweller: Sorry, I can't answer your porting question. I just wanted to support your rev/caliber choice. I have one I bought 6 yrs. ago this month. Made in '86. It & a 3-screw BH go to the range w/me frequently. Favorite guns & caliber. I load them down for enjoyment, but carry one or the other in the forest stoked up to max velocity w/a 260gr GC I cast. Hopefully will prevent me from becoming Black Bear **** the next morning.

John, I have a 3" 657 and they didn't come ported from the factory. The 41 mag is an amazing round. Have fun with it .

Groo here
I have a 3in also.[maybe the best of the litter]
I don't think the factory ported any, but I would not
turn my nose up at one either!

Here's my 657 no-dash three incher. It is nice but I really do prefer longer barrels for shooting.

Mine is a no-dash and has no porting.

One of my all time favorite revolvers.

Congratulations on your 657, 3" pre-lock N-frames are getting a little harder to come by at reasonable prices. I've never seen any 3" 657s come "stock" with a ported barrel. But, 3" 629s are a different story.

My notes say 5,490 of these 3-inch M657-n were made in the 1986 time frame and the product code was 103951. Beautiful gun. The last one I saw had an ANN s/n prefix.

I have one also. Stumbled across it at a small gun show I central California of all places. It was "hidden" in a display of WW2 memorabilia. I was shocked to see it and jumped on it immediately, Surprisingly, it still had the original combats on it. Pretty happy about that find,

Default Photos of 657 3"

Actually I have a pair. One is non-ported and as you can tell in the photo, the other is ported.

Regards, John

As a side note one of them has prefix ANN and the other is ANK

Nice!

I could be wrong but, it looks like Mag-na-port did the job.

Factory ported 41s are hard to track down. I bought a non-catalogued 6.5" 657 with the classic S&W crossways oval Power Port that was clearly a factory build. Can't recall which distributor had Smith build it but it was not a large number. Confirmed with a friend at factory through the serial #. Will dig it out and get a photo asap. David

I have not seen any evidence that the factory definitively did offer the 657 with a ported barrel but on the other hand I have not definitively seen any evidence they did not. Based on my experience I would say S&W probably did not factory port the barrel(s) on the 657 3".

Found the history on my gun, 657-4 Classic Hunter II; 6 1/2" Barrel; unfluted cylinder; Power Port; round butt frame. My gun may have been an overrun from a very small batch produced for Lew Horton Distributing Co. in 1998, with a total 300 made, product code 103948. Mine came in a plain blue box without a code and was confirmed as factory produced by a call to S&W with different internal code.

If there are any of you out there who know about other models of 657s factory ported, I would be interested. I own a nice 58 that was sent to Mag-na-Port by its original owner. Great shooter with Georgia Ammo or HSM Cowboy loads. David

I don't mean to hi jack this thread but does anyone have pics of the 657 3" with some sweet boot grips, rubber or wood? To me they seem to balance out the overall look of the gun.

Take a look at the 657 PC w/the 2 5/8" barrel. They shipped with checkered Eagle Secret Service boot grips.
