Default .22 Long Rifle Identification

Hello,
I am unclear on the model # of my recently decease father's S&W Long Rifle (.22) SN CHZ3815. I called S&W and was told that it's a Model 617 manufactured in Feb 2005. However, when looking up the 617 online, it's listed as having 10 rounds, but I'm certain the pistol only carried 6 rounds. I took the attached pictures while helping my mother last week in Missouri, but I'm now back in California and cannot get anything more off the gun...hopefully these images will suffice.

Per the forum instructions here are the details I know:
1) Type - Hand Ejector
2) Serial Number - Number from behind the Hand Ejector which I think is the serial number - CHZ3XXX
3) Caliber - .22
4) Barrel Length - Unknown
5) Sights - Unknown

Thanks,
Adam

It looks like a 6 inch 617 without the combat wood grips or a 617-1 as the 10 shot cylinder came out on the 617-2. The wood combat grips were only on the no dash I believe.

Here's a picture of my 617 no dash 4 inch with the 6 shot cylinder and wood combat grips.

The 4th picture shows clearly it is a 617-5. The Standard Catalog of S&W shows the 617-5 as starting in 2001 and adds the internal locking system to the 6-shot frame. The 617-2 10-shot had the alloy cylinder.
SCS&W shows serial number prefix CHM as July 2004 and CSR as July 2004.

Excellent! Thanks for the help guys. Once I understood there were dash revs to the basic 617, a little more Google-ing led me to this page:

S&W 617 10 shot or 6 shot - THR

And, of course the answer staring me in the face in pic #4 didn't hurt either.

Thanks again!
Adam

Yes, February 2005.

With the 6-inch barrel shown, the 6-shot M617-5 had a product code of 160568. The front sight is called a Patridge sight (capitalized because it was someone's last name). I don't think very many -5's were made. I've only ever seen one, besides the OP's in this thread, and it was also a 2005 gun. The 10-shot -6 was far more common. The two were made concurrently.

Get that gun from your mom. Give it a thorough cleaning and light polishing. Shoot it, teach your kids to shoot with it, repeat.

Not that easy.It will have to go through a FFL transfer.Hopefully the 617-5 is on the California list.

Really beautiful gun. Sorry you live in Cali. I hope it is on the list. If not, move, it is worth it for that gun.

If she is your biological not you stepmother, then should not be an issue. You can have it done through what is called inter-family transfer in CA.

Transferring Firearms Among Some Family Members - Calguns Foundation Wiki

This leaves an opening for you, personally to receive off roster handguns in CA legally through your mother.

There is another method besides intrafamily transfer. Although you can no longer do” Single Shot Exemptions” on semi-auto handguns in CA, you can still do “single action only conversion” for revolvers.
