All The .45acp Talk Here - Finally Caved - 625JM
I haven't owned a 45acp in about 5 years. A couple of months ago I decided I wanted to try another 1911. Last time I had one was 15 years ago...
Actually I bought 3 1911s one day about 15 years ago. A Colt 1991A1, Springfield Loaded, and a Kimber Classic. Not one of them worked reliably. FTEs, Jams, FTFs, Stovepipes, etc. I sold them all. Recently I saw this very nice looking Ruger SR1911 Talo Night Watchman. Beautiful piece, reminds me of a much more expensive Nighthawk 1911. Anyway I did some research on the Ruger 1911 and discovered they are excellent 1911s and receive big props from many of the 1911 Heavies.
Though excellent guns in general, I tend to find Rugers' fairly unattractive. But Ruger had nothing to do with the design of the 1911, so they couldn't make it look like a ****. My Ruger Night Watchman is an excellent piece. Super impressed with this gun. 600 flawless rounds fired and super accurate. And very reasonably priced. Can find them in the $700 range.
Well since I now have to buy 45acp ammo again, I obviously had to get a S&W 45acp revolver to match. There have been so many threads here lately on the S&W 45acp revolvers I just couldn't take it anymore. Has anyone else noticed that?
Anyway I have a brand new in the box 625JM on it's way to me. I should be here next week. Though not mine, here is a nice shot of a 625JM

Good choices on each of those! My 1911, well 2 of them, are Smith E Series. Not a problem with either ever. Also have the 625 and it is a GREAT shooter! You are going to really enjoy that one!
Moon clip tool? BMT is the way to go. Expensive, but well worth it.

I am going back to shooting .45 ACP -after a brief haiatus-in both semi-auto and revolvers. To make the onerous task of finding my ejected brass easier I just bought a mosquito net off of ebay to catch the precious little buggers. That should sure beat searching thru the weeds. I wonder why you had so much trouble with your early 1911`s I have never had one that wasn't totally reliable?

I've been using a mesh tarp for brass catching whenever I use my autoloaders.
I prefer wheel guns for most things mostly because I hate chasing brass, but at last .45 auto brass is easier to pick up (and see for that matter) than the .380 and .32 ACP brass!

Just got my 625 JM. I mighta, sorta, well, contributed to your purchase, as I started one of those threads you read.
Only put a few rounds of factory ammo down the barrel, but I think I'm gonna like it. Sweet shooter.
Look forward to loading up some rounds for it.

I have a pair of 625's (a 625-6 Model of 1989 with 5" barrel and a 625-8 JM Special with 4" barrel). My JM is my favorite revolver:
This is one serious reason that I LOVE these revolvers - standing at 25 yards:
You will be a VERY happy camper with the 625 JM, I guar-an-tee it!!

If you leave the mainspring screw alone you will be treated to a perfectly reliable handgun that will shoot with the most expensive 1911s around and never leave you wondering where your brass is! ENJOY.

The local gun show is coming to town here this weekend. I'm Hoping to
find one there. If not, I'll be looking for one on line.

I picked up my 625 JM in Jan. this year. Then a 25-12, then a 25-2, and just recently a 1917. They are addictive!!
BTW, I second the BMT demooner. What a tool!!!

I HAVE A 4" 625, MODEL OF 1989, IN .45ACP. I DON'T THINK MANY WERE MADE IN THAT BARREL LENGTH--UNLESS PEOPLE JUST DON'T SELL THEM. I PURCHASED MINE OFF GB, ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO. I HAVEN'T SEEN ONE FOR SALE SINCE THEN. I HAVE SEEN A HANDFUL OF THE 3" AND 5" VERSIONS ON GB, HOWEVER.….
IT MAY BE MY FAVORITE S&W REVOLVER. (OF COURSE, I SAY THAT SAME THING ABOUT A FEW OTHERS) THE .45ACP CARTRIDGE REALIZES ITS FULLEST POTENTIAL, WHEN SHOT FROM A REVOLVER. IT HAS A SUPERB TRIGGER, AND IS DEADLY ACCURATE. I DON'T USE MOON CLIPS AT ALL, AS IT IS A RANGE SHOOTER. I LIKE THE FACT THAT I DON'T HAVE TO CHASE BRASS, AND IT HAS NO IL. WHAT'S THERE NOT TO LIKE ? ? ?
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR RUGER (WHICH I BELIEVE IS A GREAT BARGAIN IN 1911s), AND YOUR NEW JM 625…...

What are you guys talking about..........45's
Congrats on your Ruger 1911 purchase, I too think that is a good looking 45 and those that I know that shoot them have been totally satisfied. The 625Jm will warm your heart Enjoy
I too have a love for the caliber and purchased my E series 1911 and had to compliment it with my 625JM too!
Both are great guns to shoot. Xtreme bullets offers a nice 200gr SWC plated and the other flat nose bullets are Berrys plated 200gr.
Did a complete trigger job and springs on the 625 and it came to life nicely for me.
Great looking guns by all!

They all jammed, especially with hollow points. It was 15 years ago and it seemed to be a bad period for 1911s, everyone was having problems with 1911s back then. At least it seemed that way. Tons of problem threads on the forums.

Looks real nice with those Altamonts. I will probably keep the JM grips on it. I am partial to wood with no finger grooves.

Looks like by luck I'm joining the ranks of 625 JM owners too... today I was at a not so local GS doing a transaction on a CZ 455 American .22LR rifle, when the owner asked about what else I'm interested in, I mentioned that I was a stone cold S&W junkie. With a smile he said "we just got this in this morning"... he disappeared and returned with a current style blue S&W case. Flipped it open... and there lay a 625-8 JM.
Now I have both the CZ 455 and S&W 625-8 sitting out the CA 10 day waiting period until I can bring them home... this is going to be a loooong 10 days.

There is something special about the 45 ACP, regardless of the "launching device."
Congratulations on your newest "devices."

I have several S&W 45 ACP revolvers but all of mine are blue. They are the best shooting revolves I own. I like that I can reload them with various cast bullets including full wadcutter. A 235 grain full wadcutter at 900 fps is a hard hitter!

I have been tinkering with grips on the JM, I have the originals and rubber and now the Altamont. I may also look for some fingerless but these are pretty darn nice for my grip right now.
LOL and it's nice not to have to chase brass, yes I am a reloader

Gotta keep commenting that I bought a 625 PC, because my 625 JM with EDM rifling leaded too much. I gather that some castboolit experts can design a suitable nonleading bullet and load, but I gave up. My 625 JM is reserved for my stash of FMJ ammo and bullet supply. I might try gas checks some day, but EDM rifling is simply not meant for lead. S&W (and probably Jerry Miculek) changed to button rifling in the PC for a reason, my guess being that Jerry went into his lead bullet reloading phase.

at liberty;
I am not poo-poohing your personal experience. However, I have at least 20,000 cast bullets through my 625's and i seldom clean the barrel. I brush out the chambers with a chamber brush every time I shoot but seldom the barrel. I get NO leading.
However, I home cast my bullets (WW's+2% tin) and size to .452". I don't have the definitive answer but I have friends who have 625's and their experience mirrors mine (all 625-8's). My 625-6 (5" barrel) also works perfectly with home cast bullets
I suspect that one of two things are at play. Either the bullets are undersize for the throats (every 625-8 that I have measured has correct .4525" throats) or the bullets were too soft. We all size at .452". My most used bullet is the Mihec version of the H&G #68. I also occasionally shoot the Lyman 454424 (a 250 gr Keith) from an NOE mould.
I MUCH prefer home cast bullets as a 1911 barrel will need replacement at the 5000 round level if you use factory hardball. I have over 100,000 cast bullets through one of my 1911's and it still shoots well under 1" at 25 yards off a rest. Ray Chapman's ol' Pachmayr built 1911 had 200,000 cast rounds through his and it was still going strong. I know the topic is revolvers but thought mention of the benefits of good cast bullets were not out of place.
I have a Ruger Bisley Convertible .45 ACP/.45 Colt. When it was received it leaded terribly in just a few shots. Accuracy was noticeably less after just thirty shots. A close examination (gauged the throats) showed that the throats were undersize. After reaming with a borrowed reamer set (a Manson made for the job set complete with pilots) from a good friend, it and several other identical revolvers now shoot NRA Bullseye level (well under an inch at 25 yards from either cylinder).
I have heard the complaints regarding the EDM barrels but mine and my friends' guns have NOT exhibited that particular problem with cast bullets.
Just a thought or two...

If we're fortunate, Coastie 762 should chime in here. He's another .45ACP revolver honcho and, at last report, he has both the JM and PC models.

Want the thunder ranch bad. Has anyone tried rechambering any of the .45 smiths to .460 rowland? Can it be done? I think it would be awesome to have .44 magnum power with the option of cheap and available .45acp for practice.

If you are into the 1911's then a .45 wheelgun is a must. Like your Night Watchman.

Thanks. I always get that kind of response from someone who casts their own. I DON'T. I buy my bullets, and I understand that in itself can be an issue with leading. It is well enough documented that EDM rifling can cause leading issues. I have tried lots of things in my JM but am done with it. I like it better than the PC and have plenty of FMJ bullets to shoot in it. When or if those are depleted, I will probably buy plated.

Owning multiple guns of the same caliber makes perfect sense to me. I have no experience with the Ruger 1911 but plenty with the 625, you made a great choice.

Went to the gun show here today. It's a fairly good sized show at 1000 tables! Out of those 1000 tables I saw exactly 3, 45 acp revolvers. Two 25's and one 625 4" JM revolver. I was specifically looking for the 625 but the guy selling it thought that he had one of the rarest S&W 45 revolvers made and was asking $1300 for it !!! The numb nut didn't even have the ware with all to clean the dang thing. Needless to say, I walked away shaking my head. Looks like I'll be shopping on line for one very soon.

Congrats on both of your new .45's!
I'm not much of a 1911 fan, but I'm all for the .45 ACP.

Thanks for all of the kind words, folks!
Here's one of my favorite 1911's along with my 5" S&W Model 625-6, a GREAT performer in it's own right:
I also have great positive feelings for a accurized 1911 but I have to chase brass and at my advanced age, it isn't much fun. This particular 1911 was built up by ex-Gunnery Sergeant Harold Johnson (builder of McMillan's guns in the Marine Corp) with a National Match barrel and bushing, proper tang, trigger job, etc, sighted by Richard Heinie and a bit of bling via hand carved Elephant Ivory grips (cost my wife $6.95 back in the early Sixties (:>))...
Last year I gifted this 1911 to my Son-in-law- a fine man, husband and father, as well as a gifted shooter.

It's amazing how many people at shows think they're selling Faberge eggs or gold Day Date Rolex watches, not guns.

I have a funny story to relate regarding that 1911. My grandson is now eight years old. He is an ABSOLUTE fan of the Robert Redford movie about Jeremiah Smith, the mountain man.
Last year, my grandson asked his father to take him primitive camping. They live in Utah and have spent a lot of time outdoors (car and tent camping and hiking). He wanted to have his father to hike in with him, build a primitive shelter and spend the whole weekend living like a mountain man. My son-in-law agreed. In the movie, Jeremiah Johnson had bear trouble. The primitive area still has bears in the area. So, my grandson, said, "Dad, I think it would be a good idea for you to take PaPaw's .45 with us". They did and had a wonderful time.
.45's FOREVER!!

Not long after I bought my 625-8 JM Special, I decided I wanted a 5" Model 625. I went to the Ohio Gun Collector Association show. It was full of people, tables and guns. I saw exactly ONE Model 625 with a 5" barrel (it was the 625-6 Model of 1989 pictured here). It was an estate sale and LNIB. The seller and I were able to get together without issue and I came home with the only one I saw that day. Well, I WAS only looking for one...
Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't... This day I was lucky.

My 625JM is my favorite range gun. I put Hi-Viz fiber optic front sight on it. Great investment for an old guy like me! Bought a Model 25-13 today at gun show. Gotta love 45 revolvers! Enjoy your JM! Bob

Ain't that the truth. What really caused me to walk away shaking my head was not only the inflated price but the fact the he assumed that I was an uninformed buyer. He actually said that because of the JM stamp, it not only made the gun worth every penny that he was asking, it was also a rare collectors piece!!
You know, there are shysters and there are morons and this guy had it all goin on.

Karl,
Love those Altamont grips on your 625. Do you know what color finish those are? Really love that finish against the stainless steel. Let me know.
Thanks!

Maybe he was confused and thinking about a "JM" Marlin rifle!?
I'm wanting to get a .45 acp wheel-gun. Last year I bought the 45 Shield and was thinking about the Charter Arms Pitbull. That didn't happen. I bought other BETTER handguns instead. Now I'm thinking it was because I was meant to buy a S&W.
I would be using it at the range so I'll appreciate the quality of a S&W, but I still like the Pitbull's no-moon-clip concept.

You can say that again. Other than their Mark II pistols and their 10/22 rifles they are generally the ugliest guns only second to Hi-Points. It doesn't help the fact that the both semi-auto's I own/have are jammomatics either... YMMV...

Oh that is a hot 1911... Dale53, what hammer is that? I've never seen one of that profile before and I've looked at worked a lot with my past 1911's converting them to run .45Super reliably.

What a "D0uchey Gun Show Commando Operator..." I generally won't do business with anyone either that is so misinformed/lazy. Hahahaah!
If you are speaking of the 625 Jerry Miculek version yes, it's a darn good Revo that is accurate and you can shoot .45acp's, .45Super, & .45Auto-Rims out of that baby all it's life. Being that it's cut for Full Moons was the selling point for me as I can fire, eject, and reload a cylinder of .45Supers or ACP's in the same amount of time I can do the same with my 1911 commander that I have a lot of trigger time with. It was my Woods Gun until 7 months or so ago I got a 3" 629. I really wanted a 3" barreled 625 but the 4" full lugged "JM" version was a close 2nd and a good compromise!
And $1300 for a "JM" 625, pft... What a con-artist clown. I got mine "new old stock" 2 years ago off of GunBroker for $900 delivered to my FFL... I got it from OsageCountyGuns I believe it was and they were fantastic to deal with and a joy to talk to. Had to call and make sure my FFL address was correct and spoke with owner I believe it was.

I had the 625 JM and Sold it a few years ago. I now regret getting rid of it, and am considering buying another. Is there an advantage to buying the PC option over the standard JM or is it just the Looks..............Thanks

It should have a PC action job. However, my "JM" version has a very nice trigger. 1K rounds later and 2-3K trigger pulls with A-Zoom Snap Caps and this trigger is better than most triggers I've every pulled, PC version or not... I will say this; the Patridge Gold Dot front sight is very nice for picking up and putting on a target. But it's absolutely stupid for a quick draw out of an IWB and OWB holster. I was practicing my draw from a belly/body band holster and the sight came off and ran down my pants leg. I reinstalled it, then it came out again when practicing a draw from a leather OWB holster, ran down my pants leg again. Not so good in a "Woods Gun" or Street situation; not having a front sight. So I replaced the Patridge with a ramped one from S&W with the orange insert. Smith sent me the right part with just a phone call, for free, and expedited the ship date, FOR FREE! I've had zero problems since and it's POA to POI at 25 yards is spot on!
