Default 3" 64-3

Arrived today from a GB purchase.

I thought it was a good deal at $450, but didn't know it was in the original box. Even better!

Sweet deal. That's an excellent GB price, and you got what look like the original Magna stocks. That's a S&W box, but it's not original to that gun. S&W started using boxes like that in 2011 or so. Your gun is way older than that. What's the s/n? Knowing that, we could tell you when it originally shipped.

Oh well, it fits the box. I can use it for protection in my over-crowded safe.

That is an excellent weapon. I own two of them bought police surplus many years ago. One was my wife's night-stand gun for years and I carried the other for a while.

I bought 3 and used them as snake guns while mowing on the Oliver tractor.

Great pistol! I have one just like it, they are great shooters! Easy to carry! Mine is not in as good as shape as yours, mine was a ex police gun that I picked up at an LGs.

I agree with GerSan69 on the date, based on s/n and the fact there's no barrel pin. It's early enough that it probably shipped in the old style two-piece box that said "Bangor Punta" in small script on the lid. (The newer one-piece box was just right around the corner). It's also likely a -3 with a product code of 102504. I'd pay $450 in a New York second for a 3-inch that looked that nice.

You guys need to stop this insanity before I start hunting for a 3" M64.

Good find though!

I am out of town and did not know that I had a picture of mine on the laptop that I have with me until I did a little digging. I can take better pictures when I get home if anyone is interested.

My 64-3, 3" is the third up from the bottom on the right side.

I'm not so sure. It doesn't have a barrel pin, so that normally means 1982 or newer. The old style K-frame s/n's can be tricky to date precisely. Both types of boxes were in use simultaneously, so the fact it's in a old style two-piece isn't that much help in nailing down the exact date. The two-piece was still being used in 1984 with standard production items. I'm envious of you guys and your 3-inch M64's. I'm gonna have to pay closer attention to GB.

Default 3" 64-3

The last NIB Smith I bought was a 624 in 1987. It was in a one-piece Lear Siegler box. I bought my 24-3 new two years earlier in the two-piece Bangor Punta box. Since both these guns were purchased about two years after they left the factory, that jives with the 1984 box change.

Glashaus,

What's up with all them pinko commie pistols?

Here's the 65-5 I bought last month.

image.jpg

Sporting a BDY serial number Smith & Wesson says it was made in October of '89. It came with the original box, fish paper, bingo cards, and cleaning kit for $500.

I changed the grips to a pair of Eagle Secret Service grips and shot it in a match last night; lots of muzzle blast, but not a lot of recoil.

At $450 you did good.

Bill

Very nice. Congratulations - you got that one for a great price.

Exactly what I was looking for a while back - but I could never find one at anything like a reasonable price. So, I MADE my own. I finally traded for a 4" HB 64-3, in great shape.... and cut it down to a 3" and converted it to a round butt. Not original, but a wonderful shooter and it works for me.

Enjoy your 64-3.....(I know you will).....it's a great gun.

I bought my S&W 64-3 about six years ago used for $275.00. No box, papers, or original stocks. It was wearing these Pachmayr stocks, included a Price Western Leather Co. holster and half a box of cartridges. I liked this so much that I sold my 2", RB S&W 10 later that week. This gun now wears Hogue Bantam stocks.

The 3", RB K frames carry and shoot well.

Another 64-3 . . . still not a pinned barrel but marked “B.P.D. 56” and believed to have been a part of a 1981 shipment numbered 1 to 150 shipped to the Boston Police Department . . . and shown here modeling a pair of early 2-piece Guy Hogue custom stocks.

This thread is killing me! Congrats jtcarm on a great "get". The main reason I picked up the 2.5" 66-1 I recently did is that I gave up on locating an affordable 3" 64 (with flash chrome trigger and hammer).

I had a line on a NY-1 3" but the owner decided to keep it (I don't blame him, I still will get first dibs if he ever decides to sell-not holding my breath lol).

I shoot less and less magnums these days and there's a good choice of ammo in the .38 for plinking through self defense. I just don't enjoy the magnums anymore (though I do still run a few through my 4" 686 ).

Tell the truth, I've seen all the posts about 3" K-frames and thought they had to be way overrated, but now I see the attraction, it's a very handy length.

I don't understand what DA manufacturers have against odd-numbers for barrel lengths.

Excellent score. I have a 64-5 4" DAO that shoots as sweets as apple butter tastes. Police trade in that I paid $250 for 2 years ago.(in the middle) It's my favorite DA revolver for plinking. You got an awesome deal. BTW if the S/N on the box matches your gun it's original. If not so what? It's just a box. Boxes can't shoot.
