Default 64-3 3"

Just picked this one up....

Serial #30D91xx. I'm thinking 1987. Anyone got a closer date?

I've never seen one with that high a number. I'm gonna guess and say very late '83 to early '84.

By '87 standard production had long been switched over to the triple-alpha/four-numeric s/n.

Any chance that leading "3" is really a "2"?

I should be so lucky. It came with the ugly pachs, but strangely they feel quite good in the hand. Fear not, they'll soon be corrected!

That is a beauty.

It's impossible to not love a 3" K-frame. After your fist range trip I'm sure you'll agree.

I really enjoy the 3.0 inch barreled K-frames. Here's my Model 64-3.

You don't know how close. We're only 4 numbers apart!
Almost consecutively numbered.

Love the 3" 64. Got one myself (3", 64-3).....though I made it myself. I couldn't find a 3" at anything like a reasonable price, so I settled for a 4" and cut it down.

Accurate as a laser. It has become my favorite.

It's amazing how something so simple, so minimal can just sit there and make me think "yup, all business and perfect for just about anything one could ask of a self defense handgun".

I would love to be able to find an "affordable", basic, no nonsense 3" 64 like those shared here.

Default 64-3 3"

I wasn't looking for mine above and a very good friend and SWCA member who knows I collect 3" K/L Frames found this one at a gun shop going out of business. It still has the original receipt, along with a small bottle of gun oil that was purchased with the gun at the same time. He sold it to me for Exactly what he was able to buy it for. I will keep This gun and truly enjoy it!!

Thanks Nick!!

That is funny....I picked up a 3 inch 64-3 early last year. Then I found a 10-5 in 3 inch and bought it.

I like the 10-5 more (blue steel vs stainless) so my 64-3 goes to the local gun show next weekend to see what I can trade for.

Congrats on picking up a 3" 64-3! It seems that everybody that has them really enjoys them! I know that mine is one of my favorite Smiths!

The serial number on mine is close to yours in age, 30D83XX

Default Great find Ken

I bought my S&W 64-3 about six years ago, $275.00 for the gun, holster, and partial box of ammo. The front sight on mine is pinned.

I have a Y.O.P.B. marked 64-3 3". The original magnas were beat to death, and it has it's share of scratches, scuffs, and a buggered crane screw, but mechanically it's like new. It would make a great carry gun if I could.

My 64-3 does not have a pinned barrel and it has a pinned front sight.
I have never seen a pinned barrel on a 3 inch model 64. Is there such an animal out there?

I sold a couple of 3" 64's last year (one, a NIB -3), & currently wishing I'd kept one.

Let me know if you decide to turn loose of the compact Pach's. I'd like to try a set on my 65-3.

+! on this sentiment. I've shot my 3" 65 in some IDPA matches and seem to do about as well with it as with my 4" model 10. But I tried doing it with Magnas and a BK grip adapter. After about 50 rounds I had to retire to the safe area to swap on some Pachmayrs. (This is with IDPA compliant 38 Specials, 158g lead at ~700 fps - a cut above cowboy loads but not even approaching +P territory.) My hands aren't as tough as Bam-Bam's.

While I may carry the 65 (or its 2" 64 cousin) with Magnas and a grip adapter, if I'm going to do much shooting they're going to be wearing something that's easier on my joints.
