My MIL owned this 586 Nickel no dash a few years ago. She was a dispatcher for the local Sheriff's office. When they transitioned to autos she was able to purchase this fine example. Well eventually she lost interest and I wasn't into revolvers at all. So she asked me to find a buyer for it. I sold it to my buddy and he put it in the safe for a few years. Recently we started going to the indoor range to shoot pistols together. One day he brought it out for some exercise. I shot it and it was like shooting a laser at the target. Just couldn't miss. It was just amazing how easy it was to hit the bulls eye. I immediately started working on him to sell it or trade it back to me. Sweet success. :D

Beautiful revolver! You are indeed lucky to have a second chance to own that fine nickel 586. Most of us never get a second chance on guns we let get away from us!

Sweet! That baby looks like it just came out of the box. Congrats on a second chance.

Well it took a little polishing to get there. It has some handling marks here and there and a small 1mm area where the nickel has turned dark. The grips are in very good condition, the wood has a few natural defects but overall VG. But friends if all the nickel fell off of it onto the floor , it would still be the best shooting S&W I have ever shot. And I do feel very fortunate to have a second chance to own it. :)

The 586 is vastly overshadowed by the 686 crowd. As if the brushed stainless (to hide the manufacturing scratches) is the epitome of revolver handsome. The 586 in blue or nickel is one of the finest looking revolvers out there. Yours is a fine example. Recovering that revolver used up at least 7 years of good luck.

Congrats on getting it back. I have a 586 4" (blued) - and yes, it is incredibly accurate. I love shooting 38's out of it.

I thought a 586 was just the blued model of 686. Is there something im missing?

Luv my 586's

I am sure the 686 is a fine revolver but I would not trade one of my 586's for a 686.
That is a beautiful piece and you were fortunate to get it back. I would like to have those grips for my nickel 586

Then jm confused??? There is a 686 for nickel but then there are 586 woth nickel?

686 is available as SS only. 586 is the same gun but available in blue or nickel. There are a lot of members that are experts here ,and I am not one of them , but several in the S&W line up follow that same pattern. :)

That sure is a good looking gun. I just never see any of the older ones in nickel. I picked up it's twin in blue about 7 years ago for $225. . .back when used Smiths were cheap. I'll take a nickel gun over a stainless all day long.

You are lucky that you had a second chance to get that beautiful 586 back. Remember, three strikes and you're out. Hang onto it this time!

The stainless craze is just that - a fad. Actually, stainless is softer than carbon steel. Scratches more easily. Beautiful deep blue or nickel are classics. Can never go wrong there. Have you ever heard of a stainless revolver getting "re-brushed"? There ya go.....
