So Who's a 5" Barrel Fan?
I got my first 5" bbl. when I purchased a 686-6 Talo.
I had/have 4" & 6" barrels but the 5" interested me and I've come to prefer it for general use. Sure, other barrel lengths have their place, & I DO LIKE snubbies, but this is my favorite "non-specialty" barrel length and have ended up adding a few more to my collection since.
Anybody else?

I really want a 5" M27. Only 5" gun I own is a Heavy Duty, It's my favorite N-Fame.

It shoots good. Mine doesn't prefer lead bullets (leading) but I've switched to plated bullets for range use now & they're good. Having the 5" bbl. & unfluted cylinder was it's initial draw for me.

I don't own a 5", but enjoy reading John Taffins articles in American Handgunner. He has written numerous times through the years of the 5" revolver as being the "perfect packin' gun"

I have a couple of 5" barreled revolves but nothing that fits in this era. Mine are both the old M&P revolvers, one in 32 WCF and the other a 38 Special. Both with the old skinny barrel and thin sights. I like them a lot but they do not get out much.

I think in N Frames the 5 inch barrel balances the best and I loved the 27-2's with 5 inch barrel.

I'm One Who Likes the 5"
My two "on purpose" 5 inchers are both "N" frames, the first was a pre.M-28 Highway Patrolman sent back to the factory and had the barrel cut to 5", the second is a pre. M-27 that came that way. The others are chambered for the .32/20 cartridge which I wanted no matter what barrel length. I agree that the "N" frames are most pleasing to the eye in the 5" barrel length. They seem to shoot well also.

My bro has a 6" Mod 28....I have a Glock 35 & a Beretta 96A1, both 5" does that count? Hahaha
My wheelies are 4" & under.
The only issue I have with 5" revolvers is holsters are a PITB to find.

I have a couple I'm rather fond of.
A 629-3 Classic DX and a 686-3 National Match. I think they offer the best of all worlds!

BLUEDOT37, I also agree about the 5" barrel being my favorite, at least with Model 27's. I have a couple of Model 27's with 5" barrels myself.
First up is my 27-2, which is also the first pistol I ever bought back in 1974. I recently added the Cocobolo Ahrends to it and love the way they look and feel:
My other 5" 27 is a 50th Anniversary edition 27-3 I bought around 1 1/2 years ago and it was still virgin then. I've run around 100 rounds through it since I bought it:
BLUEDOT37, have you tried any Hi-Tek coated bullets through your 686? I know you said in post #4 that it doesn't care for lead bullets, but it might find the coated variety to run OK without leading on you.

My only one
While I have owned many others, the only 5" I currently own is my 625-5 with Nill Classic grips. Love this gun!

Hi Muddockor, I have not tried them in my 357s yet. I started using MBC's in my 45 Colt, above, to address it's leading at/just past the FC, as I like to load mine up, & they've done good. I tried some of their's in my 629 too but they had very minor leading near the muzzle (1000-1100fps). I think the coating might not have been fully baked on them? Plated have done fine, so I've made them my standardized range bullets, to keep things simple.
By the way, nice M27s! I had hopes of finding a 27 or early 627 at the last BIG gun show but unfortunately didn't.
.
Man! A lot of nice revolvers to lust for here guys! Good thing they're hard to find around here or I'd be totally broke!

I like the Hi-Tek coated bullets almost as much as gas checked ones. Easy cleanup with no leading, at least in my .38 Spl target loads.

Love my 5" 625-2 Model of 1988!
Would like to eventually have a 5" 629. A 5" 686 would be great as well. 5" seems like more sight radius and velocity with out the barrel being too long.

I have the 5" 686+ Pro seven shot revolver. I replaced the rubber Pachmayr grips with Rosewood round butt medallion grips with finger grooves. I also switched out the interchangeable Patridge site for a red fiber optic site. It shot great before the changes and still does. It is a very accurate gun. Elliot45

Ditto! Easy clean-up.
I guess I've gotten soft in my old age. The less scrubbing the happier I am.
Besides, I like making the outside look pretty better.

Feeling totally inadequate after seeing all these guy's primo 5" guns...
Alas, all I have is a near-perfect M10 5", and a M27-2 5".
Always thought the near-perfect .41 Mag. would have been the M57 in 5". Far as I know, never really offered.

I have a 627 PC on the way (has a 5 inch barrel), should be at the shop tomorrow, the only other 5" barrel revolver I own is a Chiappa Rhino (novelty gun I know but that is kinda why I own it) I love the feel of the 5" barrel on a mid to large frame revolver. I really want to get a 686 plus with a 5" barrel and fluted cylinder, not common but they made them unlike the most recent talo-6 version that has a un-fluted cylinder. Oddly enough I want a 610 5 inch as well and would prefer that one with a unfluted cylinder for some reason, odd.
I find the 5" barrel guns just feel "right" to me. Furthermore I think a 5" barrel looks the best on a L-frame, something about it's proportions are just visually pleasing.

I have a 986 5" and really like it. Fine little steel shooter. Got it about 2 months ago and so far has shot perfectly.

I think it was 1979 or 1980, I had a 6 inch model 19 cut to a 5 inch barrel. It is still my favorite.

I had quite a few 6" guns and thought I shot them fairly well and then came across this 5" 14-2 and decided 5" really fit me in the balance department. It is a very nice shooter.

A little old for this thread, but .... a 3rd model 44HE shipped to Wolf & Klar for the Houston Police Dept in 1931. Marked HPD 38 on grip back strap, originally blued gun.

I like the 5 inch N Frame in 44 Special. The five-inch guns seem to be a lot harder to find even in a nice M10.

My 627-0 has a 5 1/2" barrel and therefore doesn't technically qualify. But this 27-2 should do the trick:
