My new Performance Center 629-4 3" "mystery" gun (New gun added!)
Thought you guys might appreciate this one, it's a PC 629-4 3" with factory Mag-Na-Porting that doesn't appear in the SCSW. I've see few threads discussing this particular model ( please help me ID this gun ) and there was one just like it that was a Lew Horton w/ unfluted cylinder serial number starting with LHM00xx ( Lew Horton PC 629-4 ) however this one is fluted and starts with SCA00xx like the one in the 1st thread. I won't mention how much (little) I paid for it but I will say that it's unfired and sat in a safe for the past 20 years when the owner's brother passed away weeks after purchasing it. It didn't come with the box but I spoke with the seller on the phone and he said he'd look around for it and sure enough 3weeks later I have the original box with label... This one's a keeper. (scroll down to post #11 for the new gun...)
And knowing the rules around here, here's some pics:

Cool gun brother. I too have just seen the same model with the unfluted cylinder with the LHM prefix. Definitely need a letter on this one or talk to Earl.

Thanks, I spoke to Earl back when it first came to me and he confirmed that it wasn't a LH. Called in to S&W too and while they could confirm the SN was a 629-4, customer service didn't have any more info on it. I'm interested in seeing what a letter will say about it, will be sending in for one soon.
If anyone else has any info on one of these I'd appreciate it too.

I don't think I've seen a 629 in that "configuration." But, it is awesome!
ETA: It reminds me of the 629 Carry Comp. https://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstor...0CarryComp.pdf
But, yours has an adjustable rear sight, and appears to have been magna-ported vs. a fixed rear, and PowerPort.

Hey Josh, you're right that is a unique one. The dovetailed front sight does look like the "carry comp" guns. The "carry comp II" had the adjustable rear sight as well. Does the front sight have the orange insert? I also noticed the spec ord. "6421", very unusual, as it is supposed to represent the Julian date and there are only 366 days in a leap year.
I know you said it was a "keeper", should you ever change your mind, please let me know. I happen to have a soft spot for the 3" guns and the 44 magnums in particular.
Best regards, Bob

Wow, that is right up my alley. Smith has made so many great guns over the years as sort of one off's or limited guns that would have been great catalog guns. That is one of them! One of my favorite Smith's that I have shot and carried a ton is my Mountain Revolver that came out in limited numbers before the Mountain Guns (which I hate all the writing on the barrel). Yours would be the perfect "City Revolver". I want it, and am officially coveting it. I am officially covering several sins right now. Great score!

Yeah I agree that Spec Ord number is strange and it has a red insert in the dovetail front sight. Jim's already told me to take better pictures (with combats of course) . I've got the letter request filled out, sending it out this afternoon, so now comes the 6 month wait.
Jim probably already told you but I found another keeper yesterday that you're going to want too . I'll put up pics of that one when it gets here Saturday...

The special order number I have come to find out with a few rare birds I have does not always represent the Julian date. Usually see this with very very limited run guns.

Is that the one they called the AVENGER?
What a find. Part gun, part myth. Only 26 made, and you got the box, and the original "disapearing" PC label.

Well that's the question, from what I've been able to figure out they share the same product code but the Avenger was unfluted. This appears to be a similarly rare (though probably a few more than 26) Lew Horton released version. I've sent an email out to Earl to confirm so we'll see what he has to say about it.
PS. I put up the serial label specifically for your collection...

The Avenger does exist. A call to S&W confirm there are non fluted ones AKA The Avenger. This one is in my opinion nicer looking. I don't care for unfluted compared to fluted.

It's in there. Danke schön.
I've got it's brother already, FPC0106. Same ship date, same everything. It was fluted, too.

I'm starting to feel like my 629 collection isn't up to par because of this thread... I might have to start "setting my sights a bit higher."
Those are awesome 629s b san!

Very, very nice Josh. I think I hit the like button so hard I broke it. Still looking for the jealous button. That makes two more I have to add to my list to get them all.
When I first got drawn into this I was thinking maybe twenty or so variations. I probably have twice that so far with no end in sight. It sure would be nice to have a definitive number. Something along the lines of a twelve step program!!
I might have to dig around and see what I have you might like, maybe we could do a little horse trading.
All the best, Bob

I have one very close to being an "Avenger." It is a 629-4, 3" barrel, non-fluted cylinder, factory quad ported. It was made for Gart Bros. There were 300 made. Product Code: 103654.
Instead of "Avenger" being on the barrel it says: "Alaskan Backpacker," and a bear scene is on the side plate.
When I bought this gun I was researching it, and it is how I discovered this Forum.

I know this is an old thread but I believe this one could be of interest to some of you. I picked it up several years ago from a friend who was in the construction business when it crashed. It rode under the seat of his truck for protection and had no box with it when I got it. The SN starts with CBL and it is a -4. I have often wondered if it was a "Avenger" but never got around to getting a letter for it. Started looking at Smiths again and came across this thread. What do you guys think?

As Jim points out, yours could have been ported after it left the factory, or who knows - maybe they did another special...
It's easy to get a bit more info, call the factory (800-331-0852) and hit the option for Customer Service. Once you get a live person, ask them to look up the SKU/Product Code, just give them the serial number and they will give you the SKU/PC. See if it's the same as in the photo above, or maybe someone can find the info in the SCSW V4. This flyer is of an earlier gun (flash chromed hammer/trigger and old style cylinder release), but non-fluted and standard production as yours is.... but they normally ran additional (and later) runs of successful models....
Good luck, neat revolver...

Thanks for the info. I wil call tomorrow and see what they say. Sometimes forget how fascinating these things can be. Pretty much have the Smith fever again after several years and look forward to catching up.
Thanks again for the information

629-4 3 3/8” SPA Serial number
I just stumbled on this thread. I have been looking for information on my 629-4 3 3/8” Performance Center revolver since I bought it a couple of years ago. I had this gun Lettered and the information I was able to get was that it was manufactured on June 26, 1995 for RSR Wholesale Guns. It is 1 of 50 units, Serial Range SPA0001-SPA0050. The barrel length is 3 3/8 inches but the invoice has it listed as 4 inches. In my numerous searches I have never seen this gun before. I have seen a very similar gun gun with an unfluted cylinder. (Even Roy Jinks had trouble...., Post #8). The gun came with Packmyr grips but I added the Culina Black Walnut Combat Grips. I only have the gun. No box, paperwork or any tools.

What a rare bird you have. It's sad the previous owner didn't keep up with the box & papers. Love the Culinas, great choice. Congrats.
