There were only 3,000 of the first model 520's made in 1980. They were ordered by the New York State Police. The NYSP never took delivery. S&W sold them through dealers. Basically they were instant collectables. This is the only "N" frame 357 magnum with fixed sights that S&W has made.
This is not to be confused with the 520 model of 2005.
Most are found in new condition or close to that condition. Prices seem to be north of $1000.00. I paid $1100.00 for one in mid 2017. You might find one cheaper if you wait, but they do not come up for sale that often.
If you like it and the price is affordable for you, grab it.

I must have been living right or something, because I was able to pick up two of them, Neither have boxes or P/W so both of them are shooters. Basically, they Model 27's with fixed sights. They are nice shooters and I have got to give one of them a workout one of these days.

More precisely, they are M20s (.38-44 Heavy Duty) chambered in .357.

There was never a manual issued for that model as it was an uncatalogued model and I've never heard of one that had matching numbered stocks. I suspect they were going to be issued with some other type of stock, but when the contract was cancelled, Smith re-installed the PC magnas, just not the ones that were numbered to the gun. Purely speculation on my part.
