Just Bought a 640 Pro
Hi, all. I recently bought a 686+ PC and thought it could be a CCW. Great gun for target, HD and overall practice, but a bit too large and heavy for CCW; especially in my normal dress of a t-shirt/sweatshirt and jeans. So, after recommendations by several LEO friends, I bought a 640 Pro Series. I intend to carry in my pocket with a DeSantis Nemesis or a similar type of pocket holster. Any recommendations on holsters, ammo, ammo holders (2x2x2 pouch?), etc., for the 640 would be much appreciated. I am a newbie to CCW, so I need all the help I can get. Many thanks in advance.

I own an old 640 no dash which is a lighter gun than the one you bought. I only carry it IWB and it carries very well and comfortably that way. Although I don't like pocket carry I have carried that gun in the pocket occasionally. I find it is too heavy for pocket carry except for very short periods of time.

Congratulations on your 640. They are "pocket-able" but, they aren't the lightest option. Make sure you have a good belt. A DeSantis Nemesis is never a bad holster to have around for small revolvers or autos. Another one that I like is the Alabama (pocket) Holster it takes a decent sized pocket to utilize that one but, the draw is smooth and fast. Don't count out IWB carry either. Since your new to CCW, it will take some experimentation to figure out what carry method/holster you prefer.
Also, you'll probably want to pick up some speed strips too. They are a nice flat way to carry spare ammunition. I recommend the Bianchi 580 Speed Strips but, there are others. A speed loader is a faster reload, but, its not as flat, try both, and you'll figure out what you prefer.
If you haven't had had a lot of experience with a J-frame, I would recommend practicing with 38 Specials before going to magnums. You can master a J-frame with practice, and dedication.
Enjoy your new revolver

If you plan on pocket carry, take a look at the pockets on your generally worn pants, and choose a holster that is designed to for them. There are many different shaped pocket holsters, and they don't all work in all styles of pants. I use a Don Hume pocket holster for my EDC,and it has been a good holster thus far.

I don't pocket carry mine it just feels too heavy for me. I do carry it in a Remora IWB holster. My round of choice is Speer Gold Dot 135 grain 38 +p with one or two speed strips.

I bought a new 640 Pro about 2 weeks ago, just this past week I installed the Apex spring kit in it. The Apex kit greatly improves the trigger.
Going to the gunshop today to get a holster, I'm thinking of a Desantis owb with a thumb break. Will report back :-)

Congrats on the 640 PRO. I put mine in a LOBO enhanced pancake holster. No regrets.

Great choice for CCW. Not much to add to the advice already given, but i use DeSantis IWB holster for the 640, which is very comfortable and hardly noticeable, even when sitting. I'll use the pocket holster on occasion.

I generally stop considering a gun light enough for pocket carry once it weighs more than my Airweight 642...
I carry my 640 Pro Series in an OWB Simply Rugged (link) Silver Dollar Pancake holster. It holds my 640 tight against my body and can easily be hidden under an untucked T-shirt.
Just another option.

Congrats on your newest!
I've heard good things about the Nemesis.
You have one of the better all around J frames (other than ankle carry.) as you can pocket carry it but is the upper limit of what most like to carry do to weight and it makes a great IWB or even OWB gun.
Member Snubbyfan makes some very nice pocket holsters and Lobo gun leather makes a nice offset clip IWB that is nice and is a member here as well.
For ammo I'd recommend Speer Gold Dot 135gr. +P or their mid range 135gr. .357. But since both can be hard to find sometimes Buffalo Bore 158gr. +P or standard SWCHP is a very good SD round as well.
Ammo carriers seems to be a very personal thing, some like belt pouches and others just though a loader in their pocket. 2x2x2 pouches but with speedstrips are a nice set up and use the 6 shot strips even if you load only 5 as having the end hole empty next to the tab helps in holding onto the strip. (For me at least.)
Normally I carry a speedstrip in front of my flip phone in my pocket with a speedloader or two on top of them as I haven't found a speedloader carrier for a 5 shot speedloader yet.
I'm sure there are some nice carriers for moon clips out there, but can't think of any off the top of my head.
Also recommend you getting "The Snubby Revolver." by Ed Lovette. Other then the exotic ammo part he makes some really good points and is a good read for anyone who carries a revolver.
