Do titanium cylinders require special care?
Pick up a 929 today and I'm wondering if the finish on the titanium cylinder requires any special care. My cleaning method on all my other revolver cylinders has been to scrub the outside of the cylinder with a nylon toothbrush and Shooters Choice bore solvent.
I've never had a titanium cylinder to clean before and I don't want to take the finish off.
Thanks muchly for any advice!

Having dealt with titanium parts used in "high performance" aircraft, I don't think that a toothbrush and your choice of solvent will affect the finish.....

I have 3 with ti cylinders & have read not to use hoppes #9 or anything with amonia (I think) that can remove the protective coating on the cylinder. I use hoppes elite & cotton patches.

S&W recommends Hoppe's Elite for cleaning their titanium cylinders. So, that is what I use.

Hey Mike,
I've done nothing different to mine that I wouldn't do to a steel cylinder. #9, brushing and patching, they've been pretty durable.
Let us know how you like it.

Some shooters lose sleep over the burn rings on the front of the cylinder. While there are lead-removal cloths, I would not use them on a titanium cylinder. Simple solvent and patches remove fouling.

Been using MPro 7 on my 986 with great results.
Nothing scratchy or abrasive.
Best results, apply, let sit, reapply and clean off.

CLP for me and a nylon brush. I shoot it enough it stays dirty so I have stopped...caring. Competition gun and so long as the wheels on the bus go round and round...I'm too busy with the feeding process(reloading x 2) to worry about it. Life is good...until you have to reload moonclips.

Thanks for all the info. Just finished my new gun ritual. Popped the sideplate off and cleaned and lubricated all the internals as well as the externals. Used my normal methods and everything went fine.
I must be one of the lucky ones. As with about every new Smith I've bought in the last few years, this one is first rate. Correct b/c gap, the barrel is not overclocked, and no tool marks. It looks and seems to function as it should for the money it costs!
Next is to get it to the range. Though it may be a few weeks as Smith only puts 3 moonclips with the gun, I don't have dies, cases, bullets or a shell holder as I don't reload for my Kimber Solo which is the only other 9 in the house so I've got to purchase these.
Between this and a set of Hogue G10 stocks so I can get rid of the ghastly rubber stocks, I've got to spend some bucks. First though finances have to recover from the purchase. I traded my unfired Elmer Keith 29-3 towards it but I still had to cough up a few bucks.
It may be awhile before this gets a proper wringing out!

I'm with you, bought this for action games and won't get to concerned with keeping it pristine it will get used. At the same time though I like to keep them as nice as I can.

327 PC. On the inside of the bore and cylinder I use a bronze brush and Froglube (a very gentle CLP, even safe to eat although it probably doesn't taste great). On the outside of the Ti cylinder I use a nylon brush and Froglube. I don't worry about the burn rings at all. My guns are shooters.

I get squirrelly when the black gets thick in the flutes. That's my point of hey wait a minute I know I am a revolver shooter, but come on now!

Have any of you with 929's had issue with the moon-clip "thickness"?
I wanted to order new (extra) ones, but was asked by TK Custom what BRAND of 9mm I shot or reloaded! I was advised that the "rebate" on the brass at the rim varied and if I used R-P brass (which I do), I needed moon-clips that were thinner than if I had used Win. or Fed…..in order to prevent "wiggle" when speed loading. I like R-P brass for 2 reasons….
1. I worked up my accuracy load using R-P brass and I do not want that to change. 2. I have NEVER had a split case…it just keeps on working.
Tough to argue with a load that will group sub 2"@50yds. with a bullseye gun and loads that are consistent. I believe in not fixing what is not broken. BTW… I have both the 929 and the 627 .38super…..incredible revolvers...

TK custom did my stainless steel moon clips for my 929 and REM brass. They work great for Rem brass only!! Too tight for other brass.
I now use TK custom blue moon clips with misc brass and have had great results.I have 10k once fired Rem brass that I will save for my match 9mm semi auto ammo.
