Default S&W model 10 police trade ins

I don't know if this is allowed or not, and I have searched the forum and didn't find much or if any, current information.

I was wondering if anyone has any information about the police trade in S&W model 10's Buds guns are currently selling.

I can get one for $284.00 total and was wondering where they are from and what the true condition these were in.

I searched the internet and most of the old posts and threads refer to the police trade in model 10's from Buds being from Australia, but the posts are from 2009-2013, so I am wondering if these are still the Australia revolvers or a more recent trade in. If so they must be from the really bottom of the barrel by now.

Has anyone received one recently and can you let me know what condition it was in.

I talked to Bud's three times and they tell me that they do not have the infromation available to them. One of them did say that they got them from S&W, but doesn't know where S&W got them.

Thanks for any help or informaton before I make a mistake.

I don't think that you will make a mistake by buying one of the police trade in guns. Most of them will show a bit of holster wear but are mechanically sound. Bud's will stand behind them if you aren't satisfied. Do not expect a flawless gun because these are used guns so, expect to see wear or blemishes. The guns could have come from anywhere but Hong Kong or Australia are the most likely.

I second that. You pretty much can't go wrong getting an M10 that is a good solid shooter for less than 3 Benjamins...

I've looked a few over at Bud's when I've been in there and never saw anything stamped on the ones I picked up other than the factory markings, ymmv. They're shooter grade guns with rough finish that you wouldn't mind throwing in your glovebox.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll find out next week what they look like since I ordered one with a round butt.

I was holding out to find a standard barrel, but Bud's has been advertising these heavy barreled ones for a while and I thought I'd better get one now.

Just makes me wonder why these have been on Buds website for so long.

The total was 284.00 and since my friend is doing the transfer no fee there.

I know it will probably well worn, but I am hoping for something that isn't to rusted and is mechanically sound.

Like g17 wrote it's going to be a glovebox gun, but my wife will have access to it so I want it to work if needed.

I am hoping someone chimes in that has received one recently to see what they got and possibly where it came from.

I wish there was a way to find out where they came from, but I guess that's not possible. I just want to know the history of this batch of model 10's.

Thanks again.

I got a square butt from gunbroker a couple of months ago. The best $220 I ever spent on a gun. Mine was a 10-8 from Victoria PD.

Great buy you made. I could never find one on gunbroker that low. Hope I get lucky and at least get one that is in decent shape. $220 would have been much better though.

If I get one from Victoria, that would be cool to, but I'll probably never know unless it happens to have one of those VPA stickers on it.

Ok I gotta ask; $284.00?? Where did you get that price?

I see the police trade-ins at buds for 319.00 for both the round and square butt models. I see one for $302.00 but that it just one specific offer.

Great low price you got it at but I do not see that price offered at Buds on line.

Mine, from Bud's, was Australian. It shoots fine but will win no beauty contests. I don't worry about scratching it up. S&W sells replacement grips that improve it's feel. Internals looked good with side plate removed so I think it was carried a lot and shot seldom.

Australians come with a little digital QRP decal on the side plate.

WB5MHA, when did you get yours if you don't mind me asking ? Was it recent ?

rifmon, I googled for a buds gun coupon and found a 35off coupon. And paid cash price. Total was 284.00. I actually had one on order from yesterday I thought I could cancel it if I got some negative responses but it's already shipped this evening, it would have been to late anyway. It will be here Tuesday.

Is it a 3" or 4"?
Here is my 3" from Bud's a few years ago.

New grips and Australian sticker removed.

Question

I took a chance on a 10-8 import off GB some time ago. It's not the prettiest gun I've seen, but shoots. It was $220. At the time I couldn't find a shooter locally for any reasonable price.

This is how it came to me:
20150504_092953 by Slick_Rick77, on Flickr

With some cheap grips:
20150526_121250 by Slick_Rick77, on Flickr

Six shots each at 5, 7, 10, and 15 yards standing unsupported, double action:
1980 Import Model 10-8 HB Range Report (+ snubnose results)-20150601_123031-jpeg

Six shots in single action at 20 yards:
1980 Import Model 10-8 HB Range Report (+ snubnose results)-20150602_130314-jpg

That's the best I'm capable of right now...2-1/8." The gun is capable of better.

It's worth taking the chance. I normally don't buy guns online, but at the right price from a reputable seller, why not?

I got a Model 10-11 w/round-butt and 4" barrel from Bud's for $319.

It is also from the Victoria Police in Australia -- it has a small sticker with a readable dot code on it, which they must have used for inventory control. I'm guessing Bud's bought the whole inventory that the Australians sold off when they got their M&P 40's. Mine does not have a marking indicating it was re-imported to the U.S., which a lot of returned police weapons have (e.g., stamping by the importer).

Mine is a little holster worn on the barrel, and had a little rust under the grips. I put Hogue rubber grips on it for comfort and sold the wooden grips for $50.

It locks up tight, the mechanicals are great, and it shoots like a champ -- super accurate with 125 grain bullets at 10 yards, and about an inch high at 10 yards with a 158 grain bullet (probably regulated for the 158 grain bullet at 25 yards). It was the best deal I've gotten on a gun in a long time. Yours at $284 is an even better deal. Congrats -- enjoy.

I ordered mine earlier this year from Buds it was pretty abused and the cylinder cuts were peened from some sort of cylinder spinning shenanigans, an over sized cylinder stop from cylinder and slide took out a lot of the slop. Very smooth now and capable of some impressive groups.

Hard to beat police trade-in Model 10s for quality, durability, and value. Other than finish wear and a few nicks and dings, they have a lot of life left in them.

Hell, I've got a few nicks and dings of my own--and look how good I still am. (Snicker.)

The Aussie revolvers were traded in directly back to S&W.
Because they are the manufacturer no import stamp is necessary.

That's a great move. These coupons; are they always obtainable? I bought a CZ 75b from Bud's in March and a 35% coupon would've been pretty, pretty handy!

STCM(SW), they are the 4" models with heavy barrels. I wish it would have been the 3" model.

rifmon, I don't know if the coupons are always available. It's just become habit for me to google for coupons first when ordering things. A lot of times they don't work, but to my surprise when I applied this one it gave me $35.00 off.

It was a $35.00 off and not 35% off. I wish it was 35% I would have ordered two.

Thanks for all of the replies. Keep them coming if anyone else has recently recieved one from Bud's.

Gun broker can have deals, I bought a 3" 10-8 for 360 and a 49 no dash for 380 both in the last year both prices were shipped and transfer fee included.

These were the $269 ones from one of Buds earliest shipments.

Both had a lot of surface wear but locked up tight.
From the number of small dings on them, I could only conclude that Aussie police were trained to throw their revolvers like boomerangs at the perps.
Save lots of ammo that way.
The 4" gun was a -11. Sold it to a local fellow who suffered the misfortune of being transferred to the PRK.
He believed that it would be legal there as it has the in frame firing pin?
the 3 incher, OTOH, is a keeper.

I bet these are more Australian trade-ins. The SKU starting with VPD10 leads me to believe these are also Victoria Police Dept. 10s. I bought a 3" in the last big batch but now I'm tempted by a roundbutt 4."

I got a SB 4" 10-10 earlier this year. VPD gun, cleaned up the internals and changed out springs. Extremely fun to shoot, smooth as heck.
Pic is before cleanup.

Nice pics guys, I hope mine looks as good as they do.

In case the grips are to bad to keep on her, I just happened to find a new old stock set of K-frame round butt stocks in my gun cabinet.

They have to have been there 30 years plus because that was the last time I had anything round butt except for J-frames.

Don't even know why I have them, I don't remember changing any grips on any of my revolvers back then.

I guess I don't have to wonder where my model 10 was from any longer, it has the Victory Police Armory sticker on it.

It has the expected nicks and scratches and some of the usual barrel wear and a surprisingly small amount of suface rust that will be easily removed.

There is a little sticky type stuff under the upper part of the Uncle Mikes grips that will be changed to a set of wood S&W round butt grips that I found in my old gun cabinet.

It has great lock up and mechanically in great shape.

Just needs a good cleaning this weekend and it will be good to go.

Sorry for the terrible phone picture, it's the best I can do for now.

In case anyone is still interested here is another picture of the Bud's VPA model 10-11 I received after I cleaned it up a little and wearing newer wood grips.

The small amount of surface rust was easily removed with some hoppes a little massaging.

Shooting will commence this weekend.

Oh well, won't let me upload any pictures. I'll try again later.

There's tons of re-imported DAO 64s on GB right now, some under $300. Also a lot of 13s that are SA/DA under $400.

If Bud's does not know, it just seems to me it is all speculation unless you can get S&W to tell you where the factory shipped the guns. Sometimes, the customer service people will tell you if you call in with a serial number.

It's all good, shoots great. Better than I'm capable of with my poor eyesight. No problems at all. Just finished cleaning it up from the range time.

Man is that winchester 130 grain fmj some dirty ammo.

Pretty sure it's a Victoria Police turn in since it has the Victoria Police Armory tracking sticker on it as described in an earlier thread quoting an Victoria Police member.

I'm going to look into those Model 64's on GB. I would like to have one of them as well.

Sorry about that.

I was a little worried about what condition it would be in, but it worked out good.

It's little scratched up and some holster wear, but it is worth the 284.00. Even better since I didn't have to pay the transfer fee. Good to have friends with FFL's.

It has great lockup and it is more accurate than I can shoot it.

I'm looking for a model 64 now. My wish is that Buds will get some more in on trade in and I can find another coupon.

Let us know how it turns out.

I think this is the 5th one I have ordered over the years. At these prices I can give them away as Christmas presents!! Right now we have a Model 10 in each utilized bedroom in the house. Just in case!

Here is the site that sells the most model 64's:
Revolver

I have been pleased with my previous buys from Buds.....

I'll put up photos when it arrives.

Road Rat, having one stashed and available just about everywhere you go in the house is why I got one with more to come as I can afford.

They are cheap enough that I don't have to worry about someone breaking in and taking one or more.

I have several guns, but they are to expensive to stay out and not locked up in the safes.

Not worried about kids, they've been gone a long time now.

BTW, what ammunition are you using in yours ?

I am not Road Rat, but I will say that I load 158 grain LHP plus-P in both of my M10-5 guns. I have been looking for fifty round boxes of the Speer Gold Dot 135 grain load to try, but no success as of yet. I refuse to pay a dollar a round for SD ammo. YMMV. I am comfortable with my small stash of the Remington and Winchester LHP loads for all of my .38 wheelguns.

I have a clutch of M10s &64s that are all used LE guns. Got them from Buds' and J&G over the last 10 years. I think the best are the NY-1 DAO round butts. Great actions and some of them look unissued. However they are all great guns and are my go to weapons for just about anything that does not require my duty weapon or a long gun.
I use the 158 gr +P SWCHP Nyclad load in all of them. It is a proven load and always works if you do your part. I stocked up on the Nyclads when I reetired from the Chicago PD 21 years ago and will have a substantial supply for my grand kids.
I even got one that was marked clearly as M10, has HB and is marked and chambered in .357 Magnum!
M10s & 64s forever!

Nothing but adults in my place. I keep them loaded with 158 grain hollow points.

I don't reckon we will ever had a need for them; but, being a mile or so out of town it can't hurt to be ready!!

Here is my Aussie trade in from March 2012. They were less expensive then..IIRC it was $219 or $229. The Aussie sticker is the only clue it was outside of the US. If you take it off there are no stamps. This is a fantastic shooter. I had to clean and lube it. It goes to the range with me often. Not 1 problem with it ever. You can't go wrong with a Model 10...they have been around over a century.

Just wondering how it turned out for you.

Thanks

S&Wrevolverfan...

Yep, it arrived today and I picked it up from my local FFL tonight.

It is the roughest Model 10 I have received from Bud's. It has been in and out of holsters a bunch of times! The grips are well worn and the right one is scratched up - carrier wore it on his right side and beat it up against all sorts of objects!!!

Most of the bluing is missing on the right side of the barrel from being drug on the holster.

It is a Model 10-10, serial BHTxxxx, firing pin on the hammer.

I'll get out tomorrow - if it doesn't rain - and see if it works as it should.

Sorry it's a little rough Road Rat. Does the action still feel tight, or appear to be at least mechanically sound ? I assume it felt ok when you checked it out or you would have sent it back.

I hope it functions good when you test it out. Can it be cleaned up to look ok ?

I have another one coming as well. The $35.00 off code still works so I thought I'd get another. Maybe theres a reason their selling them for 35.00 off.

The firing pin on the hammer is a plus though.

Let us know how it works if your able to fire it tomorrow.

BTW, I did specifically ask that if I was not satisfied with the condition when it came in to the dealer I could send it back and was told if it isn't what I expected to not take delivery and call them and they would have it sent back and either refund my money or send another. I guess we'll see Monday.

Thanks for sharing your information.

I got two several years ago from Buds for my son and me that showed some surface wear and touched them up with express rust blue and Nill grips.

This is how they looked after we put better grips on:

The Hogues were a little large, imho, but give you a better idea what a hobbyist can do with express rust blue.

The weather is nice today so I had a moment to run down to my handgun range by the pond and put a cylinder of 158 grain hollow points through it from ten yards

Five of the six were in a straight line running from just left of the bull toward the 8:30 position. The sixth I pulled and sent it up and left to the 10:00 position. "Left" seems to be the big clue here - I need to spend more time and with other types of ammo.

Trigger pull is between 5 and 6 pounds in single action and the trigger doesn't even move; just releases the hammer. I really do like S&W triggers!!!

The Model 10 is about as close to perfection as you'll find in a fixed sight, medium frame revolver.
I paid about $185 for my 4" 10-6 a few years ago.
It has finish issues that have been suggested by some LEOs as being consistent with a suicide gun.
It was purchased by my LGS from a local PD. It was an evidence locker gun, so I guess the suicide angle is a definite possibility.

I want to get it refinished. It's ugly but a great shooter.
I thought about sending it home for a factory reblue, but am also considering hard chrome.

It's really hard to go wrong with any K frame.

Igot one of the 4 inch m10's and loved it. I also picked up 2 model 13's with 3 inch tubes and round butts, they were from Victoria PD too.
