The Model 60 is mine!
I posted in another thread that I had the opportunuty to trade my Shield 9 for a Model 60 (no dash) .38 spl, and holster. The deal was almost killed when I found out that the gun had been modified - it only shoots double action. However, once I was informed that the mod was done by an LAPD Armorer because the previous owner was LAPD, and they are NOT allowed to use single-action pistols, I went through with the deal.
Of course, I will be replacing the Shield a.s.a.p. but I am the happy owner of my first revolver!
Posted below are a few pictures, taken after giving it a good cleaning and its FIRST polishing.

That's a small problem to fix. Shields are a dime a dozen so I think you made a nice trade, especially if you like the holster. Congrats!

Congrats on your first Wheel gun!
That's a very nice one. I'm weird and prefer DAO for a snub unless it's a Humpback.
It shouldn't be to hard to convert it to DA/SA if you want.

Glad you made the trade. I think you did good!! And that's a nice looking Model 60 to boot.
The DAO conversion is not in any way a problem as far as I am concerned. I have NEVER fired mine single action!

Now you're on the slippery slope. You'll soon forget about the shield and start thinking what S&W revolver you'll acquire next.

Congratulations and welcome to Wheelie World I never thought I'd say this, but if it can't be unmodified, then you might as well bob the hammer.

DAO in a carry gun is my preference. I've toted one for around seventeen years.
Before somebody jumps in and says you should lose the Pachmayr Compac grips, let me suggest that you'll like shooting the gun with them. They do a good job of enhancing control and absorbing recoil.

The revolver thing is catchy & progressive. I have never missed a plastic gun because I've never had one. I hope I'm not missing out on something.

I would have made the trade too, nice pick up. The DAO would not bother me at all. Now rather than a Shield a snub K would compliment that very nicely!

Great snag, you will carry that combo a lot. You will be surprised how well you shoot that 60 in DA mode. I would get a spare hammer setup with sear, spring and hammer and have it bobbed and installed and keep the original.

Congratulations. I really like the older, hammer nose firing pin, model 60's. I've been looking for one like that myself, to be a dedicated CC piece.
Looks nice.....enjoy it !

Nice gun! Use it well.
If I may............ if you intend on carrying it as an EDC I'd get a better holster that covers the trigger guard and has no straps, snaps, screws, etc. Good holsters (at least IMHO) do NOT rely on straps, snaps, velcro, screws, etc for good gun retention - just a proper fit.

I do intend to carry it on occasion but see no need for a "better" holster. In the words of Ray...

Why did this change? Primarily because of the introduction of striker-fired semi-auto pistols, many with no mechanical safety (Glock and others). Folks started carrying those and handling them as they were accustomed to with the earlier designs, and the results included pistols discharging in the holsters when contacted by seat belts, automobile upholstery, eager user's fingers going into the trigger guard during the draw, and other such events. Consequently a general change took place, with many law enforcement agencies and ranges (public and private) requiring covered trigger guards. Since then many people have become convinced that this feature is a requirement for any holster or handgun.
With double-action revolvers such as the S&W, Colt, Ruger, and most other modern designs pulling the trigger in DA mode requires about 20 lbs. of pressure applied over about an inch of travel, and the trigger must be held down while the hammer falls in order for the firing pin to strike a primer. The internal transfer bar will prevent firing, even if the revolver is cocked in single-action mode and the trigger is bumped rather than pulled and held down as the hammer falls.
I hear from a lot of younger shooters who have come to this activity within the past 20 years or so, anxiously wanting to know why I offer such "unsafe" holster designs as the Classic Tom Threepersons design (now 95 years old, and a standard for law enforcement and sportsmen for most of the 20th Century). Some are practically dribbling in their jeans just looking at a photo of such a horrible thing!
I'd like to see some of their faces if they ever saw the clamshell holsters used by some police departments, on which the trigger finger had to be pushed through the trigger guard to release the revolver from the holster!
For your Glocks, Kahrs, Springfield XD series, S&W M&P line, and some other recent arrivals a covered trigger guard is the best choice. For most of the older handgun designs (especially the modern double-action revolvers) it is purely a matter of personal preference (or occasionally a requirement of the insurance company covering your range).

It shoots great! I was able to keep all rounds in the 9-ring at 15feet or less. Just have to spend more time with it and get use to the heavy trigger. Next time I go to the range I will post the target.
I bought some speed strips to put the 110gr Hornady Critical Defense rounds in (a box of 25 came with the gun). Now I need a pocket holster for it. It will go in the jacket or coat pocket when I make a quick run someplace and don't want to take time to put on a belt holster.
I'm so happy I made the trade.

Uh, oh... you've fallen down the J frame rabbit hole! You might even start needing to go to the J hound meetings.
You might want to contact member Snubbyfan about a pocket holster as he makes some good ones.
Side gear holsters makes a nice little pouch that holds two speed strips in a pocket nicely.

I had a stainless Model 60 years ago, and sold it to buy another gun. I have regretted it ever since. I can't afford a new one, so I bought a 637-2. It is lighter, shoots plus P, but I still miss my Model 60. Have fun with your's.

Nice 60! You'll enjoy it. I just picked up my first 60 (no dash circa 1983) at a gun show a couple of weeks ago. I love the weight and feel of the steel J frame. Now, I'm looking for a quality leather holster, and yours looks like a winner. Care to share the manufacturer and model information on your holster?

It's a Bianchi #8 "Shadow" S&W Chief. Hope you like yours as much as I do mine.

My first S&W revolver was a model 60 from the early 70s. It is in the carry rotation and always comes to the range with me. A few more J frames and a couple of K frames have followed me home but the model 60 is still one of my favorites. I know you'll enjoy it

Your first revolver? It won't be your last. They are more addicting than semi autos. 2013 was my Year of the Revolver. I went from none to a handful. (then lost them in a horrific boating accident, but that's another story for another time )
My only J is a 638. I am very tempted to get a steel J frame.

I'm very much an "old school guy", so an all steel Chiefs Special is right up my alley.
I may add another revolver to my collection, but not before I replace the Shield 9. The model 60 carries excellent, and I think the bianchi holster contributes to that.

Welcome to the real world. Anything over 5 or 6 shots is wasting ammo or just means you are having lots of fun.

Nice model 60! Congrats on finding your first revolver and welcome to the "J Frame Club".
I'm also a fan of the "no dash" models 60s and mine makes the carry rotation weekly. I find I will often have it on me when goofing off around the house. It was also my first S&W revolver and I've owned it since the early '80s.
To be honest, it isn't really my handgun... The wife never lets me forget that I bought it for her and she is letting me carry HER revolver.
OBTW, keep that Shield if you can. It is also a great little gun and years from now you'll wish you had kept it.

I like the idea of bobbing the hammer but it may require a different holster due to the thumbstrap.
I have a Mod 60 like yours with thousands of rounds through it and I also have never fired it single action.

I thought about that with the holster. That's part of the reason I have not had the hammer bobbed yet. Need to find a holster.

Well, I have a question for you all: The model 60 that has been the subject of this thread has pretty much sat in the safe since I got it. Carried it a few times, and took it to the range a few times, but mostly....a safe queen.
Today I was offered a trade - the Model 60 + $125 for a brand new Glock 44 (.22lr). I could use it to teach my grandkids and for fun at the range.
What do you folks think of the offer?

Today I was offered a trade - the Model 60 + $125 for a brand new Glock 44 (.22lr). I could use it to teach my grandkids and for fun at the range.
What do you folks think of the offer?

Personally, I would NEVER trade a 60 for a Glock!

BAD trade! Well you asked! Just buy the Glock outright....

Bad idea! Keep it! Buy a Glock. Better yet, buy a M&P .22 or a Walther .22 as a teaching tool.

If I did think about a trade involving a Model 60 for a Glock, and I can’t imagine tha I would, but if I did, then I certainly wouldn’t consider giving $125 boot... I consider the Model 60 no dash worth at least as much as that Glock... look what they’re bringing on the auction sites, and 5-10 years from now, I predict the price differential will favor the S&W even more.

Ditto that. You're going to find several Glocks for sale before you find another nice M60. Plus the $125 should be coming your way in this trade instead of coming out of your pocket IMO.

Lol, this right here. I too had the model 60 as my first S&W revolver. Now I have so many I lost count. Beware OP, BEWARE!

I like my M60 no dash, but, I don't love it like either of M34-1s I also have, I would also NEVER trade it for a Glock, much less add $$.
I'm currently bidding on a Ruger LCP II .22 for me/wife and to be passed on to my adult son when I pass. Way less than the Glock and there are other Rugers that might be more suitable for teaching a youngun and still less than the Glock.
Buy the Glock, or, whatever fills the need, but keep the M60.

Put a new hammer/strut in and make it a real gun again.

No, no and no way......
I wouldnt trade the 60 for any 22, especially the G44. I like Glocks, and I have a few that I trust 100%, but the 44 has been pretty problematic since its introduction. If you must have a 22 plinker there are much better options, M&p 22, Taurus 22, S&W Victory, etc. and none are worth what the 60 is worth, much less the 60 + 125.

I'll add my emphatic "NO WAY JOSE" to the others' nay votes.
Keep the 60, and buy a 43C as a training tool. Lots of fun.

I know it's an old thread, but you also have one of the weird no dash model 60's that doesn't have a pinned barrel.
Mine is marked Mod 60 and also isn't a pinned barrel. AYN prefix.

I know that feeling, I had bought a cheap revolver it worked. Then I saw this sweet 19-3 in the case. Bought that Smith and sold my M&P 40 cal. the next day to a friend.

Nice. Congrats! I would have done the same, for sure.
In the, "It would have been nice." column: If the LAPD armorer was doing that, a stamp, the way NYPD did their inspection stamps, would have been a nice feature.
That's just a historical footnote.
Great gun, I would have grabbed it in a heartbeat!
