I'm not sure I understand.
Are they coming from the factory that way? That would suggest I could buy the plug from S&W and remove the lock stuff myself.
Or are they aftermarket? In which case, gimme the name/addy!

Internal lock plugs are available from a source on this forum:
http://smith-wessonforum.com/accesso...ver-plugs.html
Here's my 638 with one of the JMT plugs installed:

Do they just kinda sit in there or do they snap in somehow?

Your plugs look great, but that particular snubby is made in factory no lock. Why didn't you just get one of those?

Locks
I have a 986 with a lock, and I have never had any problem with it. Why is anyone wanting to remove them?

The plugs have a groove cut around their circumference and are locked in place with a stainless hairpin clip or the S&W lock spring and fork clip. There are photos in the link I posted above...
BTW, I'm not associated with Mr. Jennings in any way...just a satisfied customer. The plugs are made to fit just right. If you wish to remove your internal lock, this plug offers a really clean solution to filling the hole left in your piece. If you're happy with the internal lock in your gun, please disregard my post.

I have gotten used to the lock so I hardly even notice them but I sure would not mind plugging them. Never had a problem with them in any way either. The lock sure does not look like the S&W of 30 years ago but I don't look the same either.

They look very nice, and well done! I am going to get criticized, but they are I.L. guns, even with the locks removed. I have only 2 w/ locks. 25-15, and 625JM. For what I use them for, locks not hurting a thing. Bob By the way, welcome to the FORUM!

I keep my firearms in a safe, so the lock is redundant in my case. My lock never failed, but I did have someone bring me a loaded and locked 638 with the hammer back, once. That didn't seem like a very safe condition, at all. The time honored DA revolver manual-of-arms still works very well for me, thank you.

Some people don't like the look. Some don't like the fact that S&W gave in to the Clinton administration back when these were put in place. And some don't like it for practical reasons. Generally the more mechanical things you add and the more complex it is the higher the chance of failure. There have been people who had mechanical issues with the lock. It's happened when the lock froze during shooting rendering the gun useless.
I'm indifferent to them but given the choice I'll buy one without. I don't want added safeties as an afterthought

Morning bigggbbruce
I do the same thing--to me the factory plug (looks like a screw head)
looks more natural than a big honking glob of plug that never totally
matches the guns finish anyhow. (to me , personally, a plug just points
a giant finger to that darn lock hole unless it COMPLETELY matches
the guns finish & color).

The last three handguns I bought had locks. They were by default left off and I just ignore them. If I could buy a gun without, I would, but these were new guns. It doesn't worry me as my carry gun does not have one.
