All Steel J Frame .38 Special?
Hey all, quick question. I could probably GTS, but I'd get a better answer here.
I know S&W made the 640 in all steel, but did they ever make one just like 640, but in a black finish? Just curious. I prefer all steel snubbies, but would like one that looks like the 442...
Thanks

Yes, the Model 40, the original Centennial it went out of production in the early 70's. You can still find them for sale occasionally.

If you can live with the exposed or shrouded hammer model 36's and 49's can be had pretty commonly and inexpensively on the used market and older smith model 40's come up from time to time but tend to be pricey. I do believe smith made a model 40 classic for a while not sure if they still do

Yeah, know about the m40, just really don't like that grip safety, pretty useless and just adds unnecessary complexity....

I was once thinking about having a black finish put on my 640. I asked Mas Ayoob about it and his response was...
"Be sure you want it blackened, though. Stainless, you just polish off the scratches. Dark finishes wear worse. Personally, when I pull a gun, even in dim light I want the other guy to SEE that I've pulled a gun on him and "the price of poker just went up."

You can pin the grip safety on the 40----and a set of Herret stocks cut to fit over the safety works very well.
But---those 40's are expensive now.
