Default S&W Model 29-5 Magna Classic

Just put on layaway an unfired magna Classic 29-5, 7.5". Ser# is MAG1XXX, one of 3000. It has an elaborate display case.

My question is I think this is a blued stainless steel? The documentation stated "Blued/Stainless". It looks like even the cylinder has never been turned.

Of course being in CA I can have it home no sooner than Oct 27. Price was $1200, probably a little too much.

Any info you can add about this gun would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes it is. See the post I resurrected from 2009 for photos. I don't have any pics, the store has a policy of no photography.

$1200 doesn't sound bad to me for that gun. Much more common N frames go for that and more. I would have snapped it up at that price.

Added some pics from the other post for you:

It's not blued stainless steel. They just made some in blued carbon steel, and some in stainless steel (629). According to the Standard Catalogue of S&W, 1800 model 29's, 1200 model 629's. I remember reading about these when they came out, S&W put their best polishers to work on them. I've never forgotten the quote from the S&W rep in, I think, Shooting Times, that they were "the best revolver you'll never shoot", as even in 1990 the collect only thing had really taken hold. Oddly enough, these still sell for about what they did when new, which shows the vagaries of the collecting mindset.

These pics are fantastic. That's a great looking revolver, so I would say you did just fine. Be sure to post some pics when you get it!

I gave in at the case hardened trigger and hammer. Plus no lock. I think the current going prices are way too high, but what can I do.

Yea, I learned all that after I started the thread. When I googled got a whole bunch of info from many sources. Wikipedia turned up next to nothing. The one I got is blue.

Always buy the best quality possible! I have 29-5 classic. I would ask 1200-1500. For mine or yours.

There is one on the forum right now for 3K. I am not really sure about the difference between a Magna Classic and a Classic DX other than the barrel length. The interchangeable front sights are the same . The DX did come with 2 sets of grips, one being rubber. The wood Morado grips that come on it IMO are the worst grips ever if you want to drive recoil straight back into your wrist.

The DX for the most part was 6.5" bbl and the Magna was 7.5 ". The DX was produced ( about 200 units ) with a 5 " bbl. Below is a 5" I bought nearly 30 years ago

Yeah, Pete, that NOS MagnaClassic is tempting because it's the complete package but I'm still holding out for a TL, 2nd, or 3rd Model .44 target. I picked up this unfired-since-factory example, MAG 0612, in November 2020 for a good price, albeit without all the original packaging.
