Found this 19-5 @ pawn shop
Was out at some pawn shops today looking over the local goods. Came across a really nice Smith and Wesson 19-5, snub nose 357 in a strange black finish. (Dull finish like a 28-2) On a whim I bought it (cheap)
Serial number is ANE6***, snub nose, has pachmayr grips (replacement) and a round butt.
What the heck is this thing? Could it be a DSS gun? Serial number doesn't jive from researching the board.

July - November 1986.
I think it could be a product code 100728. They were made for the Connecticut State Police. Or it's an over run from that order. They were matte like that. They only thing is all the CSP gun's I've seen were s/n prefix AYY and shipped in August of 1988. Could mean something, or it could mean nothing. It sure looks like a 100728, in any event.

I have a 19-5 2 1/2" with a matte finish. It was shipped to the U.S. State Department as per Roy's letter. It also has rubber grips.

Bounty Hunter
Nice revolver--reminds me of the 29-10 Bounty Hunter.
I have to ask, what is in the cylinder in the bottom picture--looks like a flake of metal?

That is light reflecting off the coat of oil I put on it. It was bone dry. Cleaning the barrel and cylinder came out clean, no residue at all. There is no flame cutting at all. A rub mark on the outside of the cylinder all all the damage noticeable. The finish definitely is factory. (pulled the grips)
Oh, paid $300 for inquiring minds.
I would like to letter it through Smith but they are on hiatus till new year.

Trimmer grips seem more appropriate. But for $300, everyone here would be all over that gun. Grips don't cost enough to matter, if you find service Magnas and an adaptor at a show, or use smaller Pachmayrs.

Welcome, Wow, that for $300. I would keep the pachmayr grips for range work.

I'll take a dozen at that price. Won't even haggle about it.
