686-3 Trigger Issue
I own the 686-3 pictured below which has a trigger/action issue.
With the hammer cocked in single action mode I can push the hammer forward until it falls.
What has worn and what is the fix?
I bought this revolver new in the box back in 1989 and it has never had any action work. It does have a very smooth double action pull, and a crisp and light single action release...
Does this gun need a trip to a competent gunsmith?

Send it back to S&W. It's got a lifetime warranty, right?

The single-action mechanism is worn or chipped to the point it can be over-ridden by simply pushing off on the hammer. As suggested above -- send it back to S&W.

I have this same type 6" purchased new in 1993. Earlier this year the cylinder was not indexing properly 20% of the time. With the side plate pulled it was cleaned , dried w/compressed air , oiled and re-sealed. Works GREAT. If you bought new...send her back. Likely a simple fix...
These are WONDERFUL pieces of machinery...mine is here in WY protecting tonight in a hotel room...just like it has for 22 years. Never killed more than a grouse. She's a traveler!!! The most laid back friend I ever had...always ready and never jumped outta' the holster...not one time with a threat. SS S&W; clean the ol' girl up once in a while...oil and she'll never let ya down.
No BS...Jus' sayin'

Although I'm the first and only owner, I don't think this revolver is covered by S&W's warranty.

Never hurts to ask. The most they can do is say no.

Well, it needs to be fixed regardless. It's a simple repair that any competent gunsmith who knows his/her way around the innards of a S&W can accomplish in about 15 minutes.

That's push off as noted by previous posters. The more you demonstrate push off, the more you hurt the engagement surfaces. So I wouldn't do it anymore. Honestly it's a very simple fix (unless you've pushed it off too many times which can result in needing a new hammer and trigger). There is a sticky in the gunsmithing section that covers it.
If it were my gun I'd give s&w a call. FYI, lifetime warranty started in 1989, although not sure on the month. So that would be my first stop. Good luck!

The Lifetime Service Policy applies to all models from Feb. 1, 1989 forward.
The -3 was still being made in 1993, but the earliest ones were made in 1988.

BEFORE SENDING IT BACK. CHECK THE STRAIN SCREW TO MAKE SURE IT'S SCREWED DOWN TIGHT. JP

Thanks for the replies and thanks for the tip PPC...
I'll call S&W and if covered I'll send in. If not, there are several competent S&W revolver gunsmiths in my area who should be able to fix it. I've sent an older model 60 in for repair on my dime and the FedEx shipping fees for a firearm is steep.
I just hate to potentially lose my best factory single and double action trigger pull. This gun has been as smooth as butter since new.
