Default M629-4 Today's Pawn Shop Purchase

Before everything came unglued at Smith & Wesson, they made this one. That's why I bought it. Figured I needed an example of the last dinosaur in my collection. About all that's wrong with it are the original rubber grips. . .feels like holding an egg in your hand. I have an older plastic box for it. . .really borderline for this date gun (1994), but it will do. I brought it home and tore it apart. It looks like the gun had a cylinder or two fired through it and then maybe carried deer hunting. It had never been cleaned. The owner probably thought it was a tool just like his hammer so why clean it. A little bore and cylinder cleaning and some Flitz with a good rubdown. It really wasn't that dirty. Looks about like new now. It's definitely not a work of art like the older Smiths. You can see how they were starting to fall back a little in the early 1990's. Still a nice gun for what it is. About 98%. I paid a big old $535 for it. I never pay much for the newer Smiths. Now if I can just find a pair of round-butt combat grips, it will look a lot better (if not original). I probably won't invest in grips for a revolver like this one, although, combat grips are a good investment in themselves.

Nice !
A set of RB to SB conversion Kuracs would be the ticket IMO

I know you don't need to hear it, but 'Ya done good!'

All of my RB thumpers wear the X-frame grips these days, but as Engine49guy said, some Kuracs would look great !

Alright Doc, that does it! I'm taking a drive over to your neck of the woods and visiting the gun stores you're going to! You stole one beautiful Classic! I have a dash 3 6"er that is one of my favorite shooters. Congrats neighbor.

I let this one sit in the pawn shop for over a week. I was a bit shocked when it was still there today. I'm kind of happy with it now that I've cleaned it up. Maybe some round butt Altamont grips for it. I don't want to spend a ton of money on grips although the Kuracs look really good!

A gun like this, I'd rather it NOT to of been cleaned, since a novice would likely do more harm than good attempting to clean something they didn't really understand or appreciate.

Great deal in this area Doc. Would have brought it home at that price, even if not my favorite caliber.

Though it may not be a work of art like older Smiths it is a stronger and more durable revolver for the .44 magnum than the ones that came before it.

There should be no shame in owning those 1990's Smiths. I actually prefer them in .357 and .44 mag.

It should make a great shooter.

Nice steal, I mean deal...

I enjoy that "era" of 29/629s.

Yup, no scopes, that's for sure. I saw the little holes for one hidden under the rear sight. . .I don't plan on using them. I've got some new Altamonts on the way. A pair for round to square and a pair of just round.

That's a great-looking 629! From the picture, it looks like it has the flash-chromed hammer and trigger like the earlier dash models.

Those metal medallion Hogues are mostly likely what it had as it left the factory. So you might want to hang onto them. Or pitch 'em my way....
