Default Any 649 Fans Out There?

So I just recently picked up this little beauty and was trying to figure out if I should swap out the stocks, or just add a T grip to her.

Hogues for me, but a T or BK grip adapter is good too.

All of the above is great. I put Crimson Trace grips on mine--not as pretty as wood but a lot easier to shoot accurately.

My one and only "J" frame is a 649-2. Nice to see you didn't drink the kool aid and go for the later .357 version. Great shootability for a small revolver. IMO, the best one of the lot.

Thanks, I have owned the later model Magnum versions of the 649 and they were great but the dam Hillary Hole really bugged the **** out of me.

I have tried really hard to like CT grips but I just cannot get used to them.

Oh yeah! I'm a huge fan. I bought my 649-3 new back in the 90s and it has been my most carrried/used gun I have ever owned. Remarkably accurate too. And I love the Uncle Mike's stocks that came on mine. Congratulations on your wise choice!

I'm editing to add that I have never had any issues shooting .357 in this gun. I think the Uncle Mike's play a big part in this.

I carry the DAO 640 snubby, but if I were to buy one with SA capability it would be the 649 in .38 Special. Great guns.

Unlike a lot of people, I don't find the humpback lines ugly at all.

zombie66, you polish the handgun? It's so shinny it looks nickel finished.

Rich

Oh, and put on a "T-grip" adapter (or BK). Makes for a perfect pocket handgun.

I think someone polished it as it like this, im really not sure how to tell if it is a Nickel finish. I have a few other Stainless Smiths and this is by far the nicest finish I have ever seen.

Dumb question time: How can you tell if it is a Nickel Finish?

Don't know. My dumb question. You sure it's a 649 and not a nickeled 49?

I have one and two model 49's. Like me some "humpies". As for the stocks, I find the "issue" stocks a bit short so I changed them out.

Wink Gotta love a 649

Here's my 649 with the Crimson Trace Laser Grips in its Lobo Gun Leather enhanced Pancake holster:

While it handle 357's just fine I usually load 38 + P's which smooths it out even more.

I like my newly acquired 649-3 now more than ever after I got it back from the S&W Performance Center with repairs and upgrades. Looks like new (until you take the grips off, some pitting remains) and I believe it functions better than it ever did! I need practice with .357 though.

Stay safe, John

SW 649-2 purchased used a year or so ago. Traded off a 442 and haven't looked back since.

Not a 649, but purchased my Model 49 in the early 1990's. It has VZ Grips with an IWB Milt Sparks Versa Max 2.

I have two 649s and an M38.
They all have Uncle Mike's rubber boot grips installed.
The 649s used to come from factory that way.
I added the boot grips to the M38.

Had an M49 and progressed from the factory wood grips to those
grips with a Tyler T and then the rubber boot grips.
My older son has the gun now. He isn't using it and I often wish I had
it back.

Always wanted the 649 for carry because love the option of single action when at the range. No issues with the hump for me. As for the grip I have the stock grip on my 442. I am a big fan of T-grip adaptors but for my long fingers they work best on K or N frames.

My wife compared the 649 to her Colt, handed me the Colt and is now the owner of the 649.

I cannot hit a barn door with the Colt, but no tin can is safe from the
649.

I love the "humpbacks".

The 649-2 stainless steel .38 Special is my single favorite J-frame.
Shoots right to POA with Remington 158gr+P LSWCHP.

I looked at one today at a lgs, but after checking it out I took a pass. The recoil shield showed signs of either a lot of shooting, or shooting some pretty hot loads. It had a substantial burr to the left of the cylinder bolt that I've never run into before. I'm not sure what would cause metal displacement to that extent, but regardless it had a more mileage on it than I was willing to settle for. It had all the signs of a hard life. Too bad because I've had something of a hankering lately for a 649.

It wasn't a total loss though. They had a minty 37-1 I took as a consolation prize.

Dead Thread Resurrect

So I was lucky enough to score another 649 from a local forum I am a part of and holy cow was I shocked to see that it came in the original box, the cleaning tool & the paperwork, really cool bonus was the sales receipt dated 6-16-84 for the low price of 280$ out the door.

The only downside (in my humble opinion) is it came with a set of CT grips and a Blackhawk Serpa holster, I got it home and did a little polishing (by hand) and threw on a set of Eagle Grips I had laying around.

It turned out great

Im off to but a lottery ticket...

One I wore in my back pocket today looks just like the drawing from post #36.

IMHO the 649 is the best pocket gun ever produced. I know all the experts say "no" to firing single action but I am not giving up that capability when I can have it with a snag free gun. I have two 649 "no dash" guns. It took a while to find them but they were worth the wait. They are my "always there" revolvers.

I love T-grips!

I am a little surprised that a thread from 2015 does not have a lot more posts in it.

I am also surprised that I didn't post into it in 2015. I have had this little M649 for probably 20 years. $300 bucks back in the day, as I recall.

What year is that 38? Do they still make that? I think they only do a 638 at this point, eh? That is really nice. I'm a fan of matte blue.

That's a great idea. I never thought of that. But it's not like you just haphazardly throw something in there. It all looks like it belongs really well. My speed strips aren't are purdy. LOL.

They make a 438 which is just a black version of the 638, they are kinda elusive though.

In fact in the 8 years I have been a fan of J-Frames I have only seen 2 and I hit the gun shows in my region pretty regularly including my local forums.

I tried T-grips on a one of my 640s some years ago and hated that they “wiggled” a little bit maybe I didnt secure them correctly but if I recall I tightened that screw down pretty tight and they still moved a bit, drove me insane.

I got the original receipt in the box with this 649 and it was dated 6-16-84 with the price of 260$ plus tax 280 OTD

I was 6 when this was purchased lol

The closest I can come is my plain ol' Model 49, shipped in February 1977. I am a great fan of the Tyler T Grips. Mitch Rosen holster. Ivory stocks:

Best Regards, Les
