Default 29-3 Silhouette!

I have a 10 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk and a 10 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk in 357 Maximum but my big bore S&W revolvers stopped at 8 5/8". Not any more! Just brought home this nice 29-3 Silhouette with it's 10 5/8" barrel, adjustable front sight and three T's. Very excited about this one! It has been shot but the previous owner took excellent care - no dings, dents, scratches just a nice turn line on the cylinder. The stocks particularly caught my eye. Nice grain and color. Came with the original box but no papers.

Can't wait to take this monster out for a spin!

Congrats on the new addition!

I call them shillelaghs due to the extra long barrel. The -3 Silhouette was made from 1982 to 1987 or so. With the adjustable front sight, product code was 101202. The early ones might be found with a traditional style "N" s/n's like N8936xx. More common are triple-alpha/four-numeric s/n's that begin with an "A", like AWD64xx.

They are not as uncommon as you might think. I've got about a dozen in my s/n collection. My question is, and I don't know the anwswer, has anyone every seen a shillelagh in nickel?

Shawing!! S&W did something special when they made that one!! You're right about the stocks, they are sweet. I've had my eyes on one of those for awhile myself. I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Now take that rifle out and shoot it!! Congrats!

My impression is these can be found easily enough under $1K (mine was), even comfortably under if missing original stocks, box, etc. Not being P&R puts it in a different category, even though just one dash number away from the coveted 29-2, and prces seem to reflect that. Of course not everybody like the long barrels.

Nobody shoots the silhouette game around here so I won't get the chance to try it in it's intended role but I do plan to have some fun on the local rifle range. I suppose it's a niche gun lacking universal interest but I think the unique features are pretty cool and I'm happy to have it join the gang here.

The 29-3 Silhouette with it's 10 5/8" barrel has fascinated me for a few years now. I see them come up for sale now and again...have wanted one even though I have absolutely no use for the gun. Yours looks to be in excellent condition...would be interested in hearing a range report on it when you shoot it. Congrats on a nice find.

Kernel, According to Roy no 10 5/8 guns were done in nickel. Having said that, one just sold on GB for over $7000 but there is no "N" stamped on the grip frame or the rear cylinder face and the end label looks a little iffy, so I am suspicious. The silhouette guns make an interesting collection in themselves. I have models built as 29-3's (N and alpha serial numbers), 29-4's, 29-4E and 29-5. I have an early "N" numbered gun with the frame stamped 29-2 but it has neither the pinned barrel or recessed cylinder. There were also two styles of presentation cases for the 10 5/8 barreled guns.

I love mine. I fitted a non-fluted cylinder to it and mounted a Leupold VX-IV with an Aimtech sideplate mount. It wears N combat grips now.

Ha Ha! I thought when you wrote "S/N" you meant to write S/W, and you actually had a dozen of these S&W weapons, and I'm going, "Wow!". I missed the obvious.

Nice.

The adjustable front sight needs to come back. 4 settings for either range or different loads.

There's IHMSA matches near Pensacola. (Next one is Nov.14!):

IHMSA Forum

Pensacola Rifle and Pistol Club

I think the Field Pistol class (100yds max, standing) is ideal for this revolver. Enough so that it's my primary firearm for the game. The Freedom Arms revolvers dominate the Revolver Class in Big Bore (200yds max, freestyle), though.

Photo from this month's match:

A wee bit north of Florida.

That looks like a lot of fun! Unfortunately Pensacola is a solid 9 hour drive for me each way - FL can be a big state. There's probably something closer but nothing I've found that's really local to me. I may just have to decide to drive a bit one of these days.

My LGS has one right now. Real clean looking but I did not check the price. I am more interested in more personal portable sizes.

If you do try your hand at the game, it may help to shoot rounds nearer the 850-1000fps performance level. Mostly due to the fatigue factor. If you don't currently reload, .44 Special is a good alternative to factory .44 Magnum ammo. If your muzzle velocity is really low, getting all of your sight settings to work with the available sights travels can be a bit vexing. Helps to have a pair of calipers to sort changes on all four positions. The cheap plastic calipers work great and shouldn't mar the finish.

If you're really crazy, here's an idea for recording rear sight settings!:

There may be another Florida alternative:

Geneva, FL. Probably Seminole Co. Gun and Archery Association. There was a fellow reporting results for Geneva, but hasn't been on the IHMSA forum since July.

Then there's something called Hernando Sportsman's, Brooksville. At least I have contact info for that one: 352-344-8836, a Neil Wallask.

Kernel; I used to shoot 100 yard silhouette matches with an 8" Dan Wesson in SS. Used sight black on it to cut back the glare on sunny days. Nickle would probably be worse.
