Which revolver should I add to my collection?
First by collection I mean a collection that I shoot. With that said my SW revolvers collection currently is a 360J, 36, 4" model 15, 2 1/2 " model 19, and 4" model 617.
I prefer to stay with the .38/.357 caliber to keep ammo variations to a minimum, and feel the 4" barrel offers the best blend performance and balance. So I and thinking the next should be:
A- 4" model 19 -one of the all time classic and matches with my 19 snub.
B- 4" 686 - stainless true .357, good if I want to shoot full .357 on a steady diet.
C- 4" model 27 - keep the classics line trend of my current 15 and 19 and moves me into the N frame class. Will also eat .357 all day.
I appreciate everyone's thoughts and hey feel free to offer another idea.

Easy...4" Model 27. Like this one of mine, a 27-3:
This has an incredible action and is a pleasure to shoot with ANY ammo.

You can't go wrong with a Model 19, since you have the snub, add the
4 inch next. Then go for the Model 19, 6 inch. That would be cool. Good Luck.

I vote for the Model 19, but down the road you need to get a Model 10 or 64. No collection is complete without one. And you don't need adjustable sights (because they're "on" to start with). These guns are super shooters.

I know its not one of your ABC choices but I would get a Model 10 in a 4". Anywhere from the first to a dash 6. I never shoot 38's out of my 357 guns for the obvious cleaning issues and I don't like to shoot 357's for more than a box of shells. Yeah, call me a wimp but I like to make ragged holes and still have feeling in my hand at the end of the day. The model 10 is probably my favorite handgun of all time. They are still inexpensive, accurate as hell and you can shoot them all day long.

I vote for the 686 or the 27. A nice 27 might run you double what the 686 will...but if'n you figure it's all about 'the hunt', then might as well start after a nice, clean, ole' 27.

I'd probably look for a nice Model 27, or a 586. Of course Jack is right when he says you can't go wrong with another Model 19, too. Tough choice!

If you have the money, the 27 all the way. That being said, a 686 is a must for every S&W revolver collection. But the 27 should come first because of the limited availability.

A 686 to have a .38/.357 revolver in stainless. It will also be strong enough for a steady diet of .357 loads. A 4" pre-lock is a fine addition, no doubt.

Of your choices: The 19. K's just feel "right"
I also liked the Model 10 suggestion (4")
And don't rule out a nice 4" Model 28 as an alternate to the 27 you listed.

My two cents. It's hard to beat a 686 for a shooter.

Nothing wrong with a Model 13 or 65, 3 or 4 inch barrel. Just saying, keep your options open.

Either the Model 27 or the Model 686 so you have a .357 magnum with no limitations.

Not on your list, but consider a Highway Patrolman. My S&W shooters include a 15-6, 17-3, 19-3 28-2, 29-2, 34, 36, 60, 65-5 and a couple of break tops. I really like my 28 and your current collection does not include an N frame, so that's what I recommend. I couldn't find a 27 I could afford, hence the 28-2.

You really need at least one N frame and one 586/686.

Out of that list, I'd go for the Model 27.
If there's anything in the gun world sexier than a blue, tapered-barrel N-frame topped with a Patridge post, I haven't seen it.
For that reason, I'd aim for a 3.5".
The L-frames would likely be better as
shooters, though.

Plus you haven't lived till you've shot a 3" K-frame FS. They are incredibly handy. A 64, 65, or 13 (I haven't seen many M-10s in that length.) They have the shorter barrel handiness plus a full-length extractor rod.

I agree with all of the above. You need one of each. Trust me. I have suffered from this malady since I was a boy. And that was a long time ago. My parents ruined me when they bought me my first handgun when I was about 14 or so. I have not found the end yet, and that was in about 1959. When you get all of the interesting, desirable and cool Smith and Wessons, I would like to direct your attention to "Colt". They produced quite a few really nice revolvers. Well, and then there are the automatics..... You see where this is going, don't you?

If you're actually going to shoot it, especially with magnums, consider that nice older K and N framed guns are going up in value as the supply of wearing parts is diminishing. A 4" 586/686 are plentiful, very accurate, durable, beautiful, and will have parts available for a long time.

Actually it started with me at about age 4 when my dad let fly at a coyote with his 1911A1 (this was during a Girl Scout camping trip attended by my older sisters. Imagine doing that now!)
Then there were the issues of American Rifleman and Guns & Ammo around the house.
When I got my Hawes Deputy Marshall .22 for Christmas at age 9, I was a goner!

I agree with other posters. If money isn't an issue, a 3.5", 4" or 5" 27-2. If it is a 686 or 586.

Kevin, you have a nice start there. If you don't have a 4" Model 19, ya have a huge hole in your assortment. After you get your M-19, you should follow that up with a 4" M-66, then a 2 1/2" M-66. Finally add one J frame and you are good to go . Keep up the good work.

In addition to a 3" of your choice, match your 15 with a Model 67...

the "NEXT" one should be the one you find and can afford on the list...
you will end up completing the entire list... and then some.
the model 27 will be the tough one to land... $$$
a model 28 highway patrolman is a great accommodation to that...

The 27 is the stronger of the two guns the 19 the more graceful.
Look at it this way the 19 is the greyhound of the 4in 357's the 27 is the bulldog.

Those are 3 that belong in anyone's safe, but all the above mentioned need consideration also. Like a 1911 I believe a 10 needs to be included in everyone's collection. Of course the 27, the 64, the 15, the 29...... The list goes on and on

Hands down you have enough short barrels. I'd go with a nice M27 or M28 with a 6" barrel. The M28 would compliment your m19.
But a m27/4" & m28/6" would be nice.
After the m27 or M28 your next one should be the K38 Combat Masterpiece 4" barrel. Then you have a nice leo/police service collection.
But after the above I'd get a m58, m57 & m29.

All the suggestions of great and your choices are terrific.. One of my favorite guns as a shooter (it freaks everyone out) is a 6" 19-4 200th Anniversary LAPD Commemorative.. They are getting expensive and if you can find a decent 19 6" I say got for it… You have a choice IMO - hunt and locate or stumble on one of the outlined choices within the selection. If you are not into a 6 at the least find a 5" variation of one of the guns in your selection… A 5" again IMO is the best look and balance Smith has to offer..
P.S. Model 66 4" is awesome….

You definitely need a model 10 the bread and butter gun for S&W just make sure it's a heavy barrel. Really fun to shoot. Then maybe a K38 in 38 special accurate another staple gun from S&W. Frank

WALLET THICKNESS COUNTS.
#1 For the $, accuracy, fun the model 10 in 4" heavy bbl. A couple of
J frames a 640 & a humpy perhaps, a 681, an N frame in 44/45/10mm. So many to choose from. Your wife said ABSOLUTELY NO MORE, you have too many already. Mine just griped about me selling her colt agent.
