696-1???
So I looked at a 696-1 and I had never heard of it before. Going to do my research but it appeared to be a pretty nice gun. All original I belive w/ wooden S&W grips w/ finger grooves and a short barrel. Wondering if anyone can educate me on this gun. Asking price was around $700 OTD. Seems like a decent gun any thoughts?

$700 is a fair price for a 696-1.
The -1 indicates that it has a frame mounted firing pin as well as integral (as opposed to pressed in) cylinder stop.
Mine is the most accurate of my 44 Specials 624s (3", 4" and 6-1/2").
Many purists hate on these because of the new features.
Just don't try to make it a magnum and all will be good.

Love that style of grip on that gun. I bet it suites it just perfectly too. very Nice!

If the 696-1 looks good inside and out, locks up tight and has little to no end shake I'd pay $700 OTD in a heart beat!

In today's market 700.00 is a great price for that gun, assuming it was not used as a hammer.
I believe they actually were sold with Uncle Mikes rubber grips.If it has S&W combats that makes it an even better deal.
I have a 696-1 and it is an excellent shooter! If I ran across another one at that price, it would have come home with me.

That is a very good deal...grab it fast! be sure to take a close look at the thin forcing cone to check for possible cracks that can happen from a steady diet of hot loads. The odds are small but it never hurts to look.

I paid a little more for my dash 1 but it came with the original box, grips and +- 1000 rnds of ammo. It's got one of the sweetest DA triggers of all of my revolvers.

IMHO the 696-1 is the best shooting one of the bunch due to correct throat dimensions.
Mine also has the older style "sharp" broached rifling.
Since my 696 has the newer style ECM (smooth) rifling, I have always wondered: what went on here?
There seem to be several versions of the -1.
Notice mine has no S&W logo on the barrel.
Mind telling us the serial number and rifling style?
Inquiring minds and all that ... 
Fantastic handgun. One of the best ever made in 44.

I am very envious of the price you scored that for----very nice 696. Unfortunately, S&W .44 spls are way out of my price range anymore.

Mine is a CEZ5000 series and I am beginning to believe it may be one of the last 696-1's.
Possibly assembled from random parts lying around.
S&W has been known to do this near the end of production runs to clear out the parts inventory.
How ever they did it, they did it right.
