I've had a 929 for about a year now and shot it in a couple of fun matches. Had a lot of fun slicking up the trigger action and tweaking it a bit. Decided to buy another one as a backup gun for matches.

It's not exclusive or fancy, but here is my 627 Pro I bought to treat myself for my 60th birthday.

This is it when I first picked it up at my local FFL after buying it from Bud's:





And this is how it looks now that I've changed out the Goodyears for a proper set of Cocobolo Ahrends grips:



The only other thing I've done since the last 2 pics is change out the red ramp front sight for a gold bead patridge front blade. I got spoiled to the gold bead patridge style front sight with my "Outnumbered" 27-5 that came with that style sight installed. I've put them on my 629-3 Classic and this 627 Pro since they have the interchangeable front sight system.

I'll have to get off my fanny and do an updated pic with the new sights on my 627 Pro and 629-3 then. The new blades are a dream to shoot with and much easier to see with these old eyes.

Ok, I just took a pic of my 627 Pro with the gold bead patridge sight installed on it. I really do like these beaded patridge sights. And I also love the replaceable sight system that S&W has on these revolvers as well as on my 629-3 Classic. It makes swapping front sights out quick and easy.

I have the twin to your 627, but I bought it sans box from pawn shop and could not find much info on it in the catalog. It is marked 627-5 serial CMX33xx. Mine started with Goodyears as well, so I assume it shipped with them? Was this a Horton run? Is your gun close to same number?

It did in fact come with S&W logo Hogue finger grove grips. These were not Horton guns. They were in fact the first non PC line 8 shot offering from S&W. I think it debuted at SHOT in 2008. I'm not anywhere near the gun tonight so I can't speak to the number right now.

Why they didn't offer a tapered barrel version of this while they were still making "Mountain Guns" is completely beyond me. I'd be inline for an 8-shot 627MG if it ever happens.

Another 627-5. Got some Ahrend grips for it now but don't have any pics with the new grips on it. I shoot okay with the boot grips but I hate having the pinky hang off when I shoot.

I just returned from the range with a couple of my 629s and one of the guys stopped me on the way out. He said he saw I was a revolver guy and asked if I'd look at his brand new 8 shot 6" 686. He obviously wasn't a revolver shooter as he had 3 Glocks and a couple other bottom feeders on the bench. He was complaining that it felt too tight. He'd only put one cylinder downrange of factory ammo. I loaded 8 (felt strange) and knocked out the bullseye at 12 yards. It's been awhile since I'd shot 357 but man, that one felt sweet! I handed it back to him and told him to keep on shooting, that it would smooth out. He looked at me like I was crazy until I compared it to breaking in a 1911. I think maybe it registered, I don't know. I told him he'd bought a fine gun and to enjoy. If I didn't have such an addiction to the 44 caliber I'd be really tempted to grab one.

It is a 627-PC, SN JMS078, made exclusively for Lew Horton (one of 200, I think). I think the product code is 170102 and I believe it shipped in 1998... Kind of a rare duck.

Here is my Pro Series. Got a decent deal on it, but not a screaming steal. It's a whole lot of fun, and my first venture into N frames, a 629 and a 625 are next. Swapped the finger groove stock goodyears for some without grooves. Much better, now to decide between another set of Herrett's, or maybe some Ahrends. Already had my holster guy make a nice pancake in cordovan with tobacco elephant to carry it at the farm. Rainy days brings out the

You might not have had this in mind when you started this thread, but I didn't see one of these posted here. My lgs ordered this for me last spring -- a hoot to shoot, and with the Tamers on there's no perceived recoil.

You might recognize the coins, too. Had several AMMO friends through the years.

I only have one. I had to be different so I black nitrided the cylinder, ejector rod and Ed Brown cylinder release. I also added a Dave Lauck rear sight and Ahrends cocobolo handles.

Good morning gentlemen,
I hope this might be the right thread where to post and my question is not too stupid. My first revolver is a 686 4" , that I bought on an instinctive basis, feeling it fitting my hand as a glove. It was intended primarily for home defense, but I love shooting it at the range where it shows to be accurate and reliable.
Wishing a second revolver, I thought an 8 shots 5" barrel would have been the right choice, offering a bit more fun at the range while remaining easily manageable.
I really liked the 327 TRR8, but several reputable dealers strongly advised me against it, reporting intolerable recoil and a flimsy, unreliable structure unsuitable for the range.
I thought its weight would have made it easier to handle and still very manageable with the 38 spl. ammo I mainly use and that some 50 rounds monthly as a second handgun would have not put it in danger.
Although driving far away from my region, I finally had the nice opportunity to hold (although not to shoot..) and compare side by side the 627 PC, both 4" and 5", the 327 TRR8 and the 686 (although not 8 shots) of the same barrel length.
I found the grips more a less all the same, a bit shorter with less room for the little finger than in my 686, but still very comfortable. I felt the 627 4" a bit clumsy, the 5" extremely well balanced but a bit heavy and the 686 very close to what I already own.
The 327 seemed to me beautifully balanced and easy to hold even with a single hand, so that I happily bought it, but had to return it due to the weird occurrence I elsewhere reported.
Being not in a hurry, I could order any model at my LGD and easily wait for it to arrive.
On the one hand , the hearts wants what it wants , but on the other hand I'm really wondering whether the destiny ( or any equivalent as you might call it) is clearly telling me I don't have to buy a 327 , but rather shift to the 627.
Any advise and considerations?

I like my 327TRR8 better than my 627PC. I don't know what problem you had with the 327 but I wouldn't let it deter you since you already compared the two first hand. Go with your first impression.

I saw a 627-5 just like that at the Big Gun Show but it was late on the second day & my feet were wore out, so I headed home. It didn't take long, after I left, that I started kicking myself for not getting it.

You don't see those that often. I don't know why they're not a standard catalog item? Seems like a no-brainer, but then again S&W and I don't seem to think alike often.

I didn’t get much feedback to my question, possibly being posted in the wrong thread. Anyway, a 627-5 PC NIB was available at my LGS for a good price, so I bought it.
I find it beautiful, although more demanding to be shot than expected.
Dunno whether this will be how the story ended, should I have the chance to get more info, try the 327 at the range or stumble across it the right way in the future.

I guess it all depends on what you want...

I will say that I'd describe the 627 4" as anything but "clumsy" though...and if you don't like the 4", I'm surprised you like the 327 with its 2" barrel.

If you want a range pistol...I'd strongly advise against the 327, it just isn't the purpose of that firearm. If you want to carry, or better use for home defense, I think the 327 is definitely the best fit. Like I said, it should be based on what you plan to do with the thing.

Me? I wanted a range pistol. I sat down the 627 PC, and the shorter Pro, the longer barrel on the PC just wasn't my bag. In the end, I chose the pro. I had it reworked by a local smith and once I got the trigger right, I popped on different grips and a red dot. Thousands of rounds later, I feel my 627 is one of the finest shooting firearms I've ever owned.

He is not referring to the 2" Pug Nosed 327

I wonder if it's sighted in for shooting 6 O'clock Hold? Just like on my PC 27-8, that would be the first thing on that gun I would have to change. I would throw a white outline .146 in there, or maybe buy a taller front sight if they offer one.

That revolver is one of the very rare two tone, Model 327 TRR8s, product code 170298.

That rear sight properly matches the revolver's McGivern bead front sight and is adjusted for a dead on hold.

Replacement rear sight blades are available for the N-frame revolver in heights up to .196

I just put a .160 white outline blade on my 327 hoping it would clear the top rail when installed. Mine came with a white dot front and V-notch rear. Difficult to see even with the rail removed.
Pic shown as rear sight set way too high! I haven't had the time with my other experiments to "sight it in".

Thank you for your attention and apologies for not being able to better explain my feelings. Saying my 627-5 PC 5” is more demanding to shoot than expected just came out from my mind without a definite technical support.
I mean I imagined that shooting a PC, top class revolver, could provide easier and better results to me.
It was not. The gun is clearly accurate, reliable and well balanced, but it requires me to apply a greater effort and concentration to achieve scores as I get more easily and instinctively with my 686 4”.
Maybe it’s the weight, maybe the front sight brass dot potentially deceiving on different lights, or the trigger so differently sensible, or maybe recoil that – albeit definitely manageable – bites slightly more due to the uncovered back strap.
Maybe it’s just I don’t have enough experience so far with it, like driving a Shelby or a Corvette requires specific abilities and training to get the best of their performance.
