Default 65-3 with 3 Inch....Current Value and How Desireable??

Hey all,

I only have 1 S&W revolver and it's the Model 65-3 with the 3 inch barrel.

I really like it and have no intention on selling it, but there are times that I see other S&W revolvers and would like to trade this one towards them.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think the current price would be like for this revolver if I were to put it up for sale? I'd say it's easily 90%, likely higher.

One of the revolvers I have wanted ever since handling one at the NRA show here in Houston is the 627 Bloodwork. Oh My!! That piece gets me riled up every time I see one posted. I'd love to have one of those babies. What do they sell for right now if they're in good condition and USED?

Thanks all for the help.

The 65 3 inch is very desireable, any 3 inch is hot right now.Price is in the 600 to 750 range. The bloodwork pre-lock if you can find one will be north of a thousand, way north.

I don't carry. I had a 65-3, myself. I traded it (bought it right) for a 4" 586 no dash. I personally enjoy shooting the 586 much more. As we all know, everyone is different. Bob

What about a "Bloodwork" with the lock like are being sold now? How much do they usually sell for USED?

Thanks

Just one man's opinion, but if I had to pick only one handgun, your M65 would be at or near the very top of the list.

It is short barreled enough to conceal if you choose to, but the barrel is long enough to develop near full velocity from the ammo, and to aim and shoot accurately.

It balances well, and can shoot mild 38 specials all the way up to wild 357 magnums equally well. Shoots SA or DA, and to top it off it is made of low-maintenance stainless steel besides.

Can't get much more versatile or cover more bases with one gun than that, IMO. My 65-5 would be about the last one in my safe that I'd consider letting go. The only thing that could make it any better would be if it had adjustable sights like an M66 - and that would only be at best a marginal improvement since fixed sights tend to be a little bit better for CC use.

Again, just one man's opinion...

USED () 627 UDRs sell for very close to retail price; very few of them are used enough to drop the price significantly. Check GB and the usual places online for current selling values.

Your 3" 65 is a fine gun and now feels neglected with all your UDR envy...an apology and range trip are in order to soothe hurt feelings .

Default Quick summary completed auctions

Just a quick look. Some reserves may not have been met. SHort take is the 627 is commanding about twice the price of the 3" Model 65. (I'd keep the 65, too.)

Amen to keeping the Model 65. Remember, at $600-750 for a used one, you're likely not to get more than $400-$450 in trade. Most LGS' will deal from the "blue book", allowing for a slight premium in some cases.

Mine is a police turn in marked BRPD. (Baton Rouge) It rides very well when on the riding mower, tractor, or 4 wheeler, or just bumming around. I like the feel, balance, accuracy, and power. I will not get rid of mine. If you get rid of yours you will regret it. Trying to replace it will cost you much more than you have in it.

You have a fine all around revolver.
I bought a 3" blue M13 for my then fiancee`... when we broke it off, she declined to sell it back to me. At the time they were sought after, as they were fbi issue then.
I consoled myself when I bought a 3' M66-2. Still, if I came on a 3" M13 or a 3" 65 that I could afford, I would. You will regret selling it.

My consolation piece.

This was my companion for many days afield, on foot or horseback.

Recently I recall seeing a M65 3" no I.L. Lady Smith in the Forum classifieds, condition was north of 95% with no box if I recall correctly. It was priced at what I thought was a attractive price, $575 shipped and it lingered for a week or 2. You didn't note yours being a Lady Smith so I assume it was not. I was really tempted by the mentioned Lady Smith but wasn't in a buying frame of mind. If all I could get was in that price range I would keep the M65 . Good Luck

I agree with everyone. My 3" 65-3 would be the last gun to leave. They are always described as "everything you need, and nothing you don't."

Had a buddy pick up a 65 3-inch at a local show some weeks ago. He gave $500 OTD. At that same show, two or three 4-inchers were lying about in the $450-$475 range.

Thanks guys.

I guess I'll just keep it. No sense getting rid of it. I was just curious about how close it was to the 627 model. I handled one at the NRA show and really took to it.
I'll just start putting a bit back every now and again and get one soon enough.

Have a good one everyone.

Excellent plan. If you sold or traded it you'd just regret it and sooner or later end up buying one to replace it - probably for a lot more than you got for yours. You can't go wrong keeping a 3" K-frame and saving up for your next gun instead of letting go of one to get another...

I got it about 10 years ago when I saw an ad in Shotgun News or Gun List. It was a place in Kentucky that got a shipment of them in that were police trade ins, I think. I asked them to pick me a good one and they did. I believe the total cost for gun, shipping and the transfer fee was right at $300 give or take $10.
It's a beauty, not a mark on it and the guy or gal that had it before me, must've knew something about triggers cause this one has a trigger that's better than any handgun I've ever felt. I just need to shoot it more.

Here in Texas I believe it is legal to carry a weapon when you are going to or coming from fishing or hunting. There's a place I am interested in hog hunting here in a couple weeks and I want to go scout it out in a few days. Gonna pack my 65 and check out the place. If I get stopped, I can always claim I was coming back from fishing and lost my pole!!

Have a good one guys and thanks for the help.

Just one more reason to keep it. You can always point to that one when you need to remind yourself that guns are a good investment. You probably have a 33-50% return in 10 yrs.

IIRC in a couple of weeks you won't need to make any excuses. Doesn't your new OC law go into effect on January first?

I guess I was ahead of the curve because when everyone was out buying the 2 1/2" Model 66 (arguably the sexiest gun Smith ever made) I went out and bought a 3" M65. Better ballistics for magnum loads, fixed sights for CCW and ease of draw, and an overall smoother revolver. The M66 is the single most "almost bought gun" I never did own....... Love the looks and details of the M66 but just think the M65 os a better SD gun. YMMV.

VINTAGE M65 3" revolvers range from $500 - $700 in excellent condition and with box, papers and tools maybe higher. Where you live may also affect the price. I will never get rid of mine!

Default My 65-5 3 Inch With Smooth Factory Grips

I owned a Model 65 with a 3" inch barrel, and somehow let it get away from me. and regretted that decision for quite a while. I was lucky enough to find a LNIB one and quickly grabbed it up (pictured below). I am going to be downsizing my collection next year (due to the political/anti-gun atmosphere here in New York), but my Model 65 will definitely be staying with me for the long haul.

If you sell it you will kick yourself in the but for the rest of your days. It's a sought after carry gun and bringing a good buck.
