617-1 6 to 10 shot conversion
Has anyone here converted their 6 shot 617 to a 10 shot cylinder? If so, what parts were involved besides the cylinder? Thanks

The best way to convert it would be to sell the 6 shot to a collector and then purchase a new one.

Except for the ILS I would do just that.

I would think a trigger and hand as well. 6 shot 60 degree rotation 10 shot 36 degree.
Buy a 10 shot and keep the value of both intact.

This would be a job for the factory or a very knowledgeable gunsmith to get everything properly timed.

Getting a plug from "epj" installed would be a lot easier than finding someone to do the conversion you suggest.

I resurrect this thread to answer any questions like I had before actually undertaking this. One of my "grail" guns was to own a 4" 617 no dash in 10 shot configuration. None existed and I could find no definitive answers if constructing one was even possible. Well...it is possible and yes I have. All that is required is a 10 shot cylinder and hand. For sake of convenience, I also purchased from Brownells the center pin, extractor spring etc. to have a complete cylinder ready to drop in along with the fitted hand to go back and forth from 6 to 10 shot etc. Here's the rub: be prepared to disassemble and reassemble the internals many many times as you polish thousandths off the working surfaces of the hand and close in on the correct timing to make it work. I would strongly suggest getting a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen's S&W Shop Manual and the specialized tool for removing and installing the rebound slide and spring. I'm not a gunsmith by trade so I'm sure most of you with a bit of mechanical aptitude and whole lot of patience can achieve this too. This is not a job for a file or Dremel tool! Medium and fine polishing stones to remove tens of thousandths at a time is what's required. If I can figure out how, I'll post pics later. Hope this helps someone looking for an answer.

I wish they'd make a stainless revolver configured like my old Model 18. I'd even settle for the lock if I had to.

For me 6 rounds of rimfire works just fine for plinking or ground squirrels.

Count me in on that as well! The 18 is one I wish I had bought when they were easier to find and reasonably priced.
CH4 , a very nice set of revolvers! The 6 shot works for fine for me too! Just picked up a 617-5 six inch in an auction last weekend to go along with my 617-1 four inch.
